Having spent ~2 years in the early 1990's as a guest in the UK, one of the things that I always tell americans is not to complain about taxes.

TV taxes, road taxes, water spigot taxes, window taxes, door taxes, it never ends taxes.

But, one of the good convenient things, is taxes were generally hidden in the total price, so whatever the price was, it was the price paid... not price + add on taxes.

Sort of the way american gas is sold.

I think the fact that "sales taxes" are not included in the price is what has kept them reasonable here in the US (generally under 10%) as opposed to the 20% or more of VAT taxes that are common in countries where such taxes are included in the price of goods.

I can't find the exact quote, but it has been said that if everyone actually had to pay their wage and income taxes rather than having them "withheld" from their paychecks, that there would be a revolution in under a year.

I'm surprised that Australia didn't confiscate every team's air guns at Customs with how anti-firearms they are now.....
