If you like being able to do things with VCDS, you may not want to buy one of these anytime soon. They are reputed to have a "Security Gateway" that blocks all diagnostic "write access" (including even the clearing of fault codes!) unless the tool/shop doing the work has the credentials to obtain a cryptographic certificate to allow such access from VWAG's server.
Source?

The doc that was floating around for VW sounded more like a cryptographic replacement for security access/login codes, which isn't great, but permits some diagnostics at least.

That "security gateway" business sounds exactly like what Chrysler was doing, which is indeed a total showstopper.

I'm amazed there isn't a class action suit against FCA yet.
You can apparently bypass the current generation of their system by unplugging the SGW and plugging in (presumably with a suitable adaptor) behind it.
If the system is supposed to be there in the name of security, not FCA profits, why would it be so trivial for a well set-up car thief to bypass it?

The end of retrofitting???
Volkswagen Golf 8 (2019)

Features on demand

Interested in buying a Golf 8 but you can’t spend extra on the desired options? Not to worry as VW has found a solution. It’s called “features on demand” and it’ll allow you to upgrade the car with new functions post-purchase. Examples of technologies that can be added retrospectively include adaptive cruise control, Wi-Fi hotspot, online-based voice control, Light Assist (main beam), and even navigation.

Funny how the news agencies are not reporting the toxic gasses released by the lovely EV fires as a result of being stuck in path of fire or fires to come & because of the rolling blackout's resulting in even more left to burn since have dead batteries.
The ground water with just one EV fire destroys local approximate aquifers Instantly!

&

If you use the chemical foams needed to extinguish these type fires they also damage water table too.

Time to buy bottled water stocks!

Huh ....I Wonder WHY?

https://amp.theguardian.com/environ...cles-cancelled-out-cuts-from-renewable-energy
Greenhouse gas emissions from diesel vehicles cancelled out cuts from renewable energy

Such a load of bollocks.

"More people drove diesel cars, therefore more CO2 output."

Sure, burning any fuel makes CO2. But the main reason diesels are popular in Europe is because they're extra efficient (and torquey) and thus emit LESS CO2 than comparable GAS ENGINES. Which is the ENTIRE FRIGGIN REASON EUROPE PUT INCENTIVES IN PLACE TO ENCOURAGE THE ADOPTION OF DIESEL IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

Oh my god am I sick of so many shitty articles in the media that murder diesel's image with zero connection to the technical realities at play. There literally is a bandwagon in the media of just writing bullshit to make diesel look worse than it is and governments talking a big game about banning diesel or doing whatever to appease the current anti-diesel sentiment that the cheating scandal brought. So so disconnected from reality, though. It's insane.
