Do we really need/want a new manual transmission that has a max torque handling capability of 250 ft-lb?

-Uwe-

No but I will take any stick over VAG's automatics failures any day!

VW automatic transmissions in general have not been very reliable and they fail to make the internals to any of them for a reasonable price tag.

How can anyone do real repairs and this results in entire box swaps & totals a bunch of cars, no?

Are anyone else's auto-boxes actually any better in terms of reliability?

I mean at the very least, it seems a VW's DSGs seem to be better than the Ford PowerShits. :D

I generally see auto boxes as the biggest long-term weak point in many cars, not just VW.

Won't be much of a SUV with an engine that stays within that measly torque limit
Certainly not an American-sized one. ;)

And then there's the question: What about the prop-shaft for driving the rear wheels? I see no provision for that in the pictures.

An SUV that can't drive all four wheels is an oxymoron; it's nothing more than a tall hatchback.

Yeah but looks like a beefed up unit for older car conversions possibly.

To be fair though... VW make some crappy manual boxes too!!!

I like the 02M 6 speed... but it has it's flaws... some of the others are nasty - diff rivet failures, failing clips allowing the spider gear shaft to creep out, wrecking cases etc.

I wonder if the new box can have an angle drive strapped to the side, driven from the diff in the same fashion as the 02M?

I found the 02M to be more heavy with extra weight and seems to smoke internal bearings pretty frequent on main shaft being audible and many diagnose it as a bad throw out bearing/slave combo and than find out it's not, upon re-installation. :p

For a while you could buy 02M units at dealer for $500 USD & because of it to circumvent payments on warranty claims being lessened it seems, anyone ever notice how VAG does that pattern when stuff is verified a POS, such as MAF's, a DPF or OXS sensors for example?
