One of the problems creating such a bad image for diesels is the number of owners who fit a "tuning" device that simply makes more fuel get injected, which has the obvious side effect of increasing some emissions - especially when accelerating.
I drove behind (a LONG WAY behind) a van last week that emitted so much smoke when accelerating that you could see the strip of smoke particles lying on the road where he had accelerated!
