Please see thread on vwvortex for full story.: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthre...h-no-start&p=110357482&posted=1#post110357482

TL;DR of the thread, My 2007 audi a3 2.0t FSI is cranking but wont start, Only code i get is a P0321 after cranking for a while and it not starting. this code doesn't pop up right away or even after cranking a couple times.

I've replaced the crank position sensor (Tested Resistance @ 850 ~ohms)
Tested for timing(GOOD)
compression (GOOD)
spark (GOOD, Tested by pulled a plug and coil and grounded plug to block and saw spark)
Fuel pressure in rail (Measured with VAGCOM) is good, however after cranking for extended periods rail shows 115ish BAR (Is this normal?)
I just replaced the HPFP, and also suffered bad camfollower failure around 300 miles before all this happened.

ALL Fuses were checked and non are blown,

this is how its been crnaking, almost sounds like it wants to fire but cant.

Hello OP:

Welcome to the VCDS forum & are you not glad you came here?

Have you measured and verified the signal for G28 to the ECU & is correct at ECU and has ECU not taken on water with ingress via inspection?

Let me know if you find the JPPSG helpful?

http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthr...essional-Problem-Solver-Guide-quot-JPPSG-quot

16705/P0321/000801 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Implausible Signal [h=4]Possible Symptoms[/h]
  • Engine shuts off
  • Engine doesn't start
  • Speedometer inoperative
  • Glow Plug Indicator Lamp (K29) flashes
[h=4]Possible Causes[/h]
  • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) loose
  • Engine Speed Sensor (G28) faulty
[h=4]Possible Solutions[/h]
  • Check Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
[h=4]Special Notes[/h]
  • The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is also used as a reference sensor for the crankshaft position and correlates with the Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 1 (G40) and Camshaft Position Sensor Bank 2 (G163).
    • When an engine will not start due to mechanical (spark/fuel/compression/timing) related issues it is not uncommon to set a false G28 fault codes due to extended cranking with a no-start condition.
  • When found in a VW Golf/Jetta (1J/9M) or Audi A3 (8L) with 1.9l TDI-PD (AXR), check TPI 2007067 which explains issues with electro magnetic interference. A modification to the wiring will fix this problem, extensive details can be found in the named TPI. Even though this TPI was originally released for VW Golf/Jetta (1J/9M), a customer of ours came across the same issue on an Audi A3 (8L).
  • When found in a 2004 VW Golf, Jetta, or New Beetle with 1.9l TDI-PD (BEW), check for TSB 2010461 (01-07-45 formerly 97-05-03) or 201463 (01-07-44 formerly 97-05-04) calling for a flash update to the ECU and a secondary ground installation.
  • General note for any engine type: Check the wiring to/from the sensor and engine control module to rule out harness and module damage due to engine oil or coolant from a failed sensor or tensioner. This is an example from a 2012 Tiguan with Coolant in the ECM which resulted in G28 DTCs in addition to intermittent stalling.

I have not verified the wires to the ECU, I looked at the ECU and externally it looks good but I know that doesn't mean a whole lot.

I have the wiring diagrams so ill trace that and check everything out for the G28, The only reason I haven't is I was told that if the G28 isnt working then i wouldnt get any spark.
Nonetheless I will check all that when it stops raining.

Is your cars ECU FOD tuned?

Will it run with just carb cleaner sprayed in intake to isolate a fuel condition verse an ignition or timing issue from being out due to setup or oil PSI problem.

Yes ECU is tuned Stage 2

Yes I ran it with starting fluid, sprayed it in short bursts while my friend cranked and it even backfired out of the hole when it died, it didn't run stable but it definitely sputtered a lot more and even idled for about half of a second.

Timing belt was checked vs the ref marks on the cam gear and crank gear.

Most stage 2 tunes out there are ignoring the misfire recognition in low rpm range, and which is monitored by g28 in addition they seem to also delete g40 calibrations so it will never report many DTC's.

There is a good chance chain jumped or adjuster broke key way on back of adjuster of exhaust cam.

Take apart to inspect.
Best to start with stock controller with some type of consistent stack.

That's good info to know moving forward, I did have the cam chain cover off and valve cover and nothing looked incorrect, chain had tension, wasn't broken.

I do see the camshaft rotating if I turn the motor. Wish I had another ecm to test with :/

You say Speedometer inoperative, is that something you've found?

Not tensioner OP.
Adjuster barrel on reverse side where cam bolts on, it shears the pin and still turns just is out of time.

Jack I sent the guy here because I was lost as to why no codes?
He had a G68 code went it stalled but no cam code. Don't know if the G68 was bad or just from over cranking with no start?
He has RPM on VCDS and the tack moves and has spark. Only bad thing I see is he replaced G68 with one from Auto Zone which is a NO NO! But it seems to be working.
What has me is he said it back fires at times and compression was only 150. But was using an AZ tool loaner tester for compression.

I said timing but why no cam sensor & RPM sensor correlation code?

Good Luck

Dam right it's a NO NO for FOD I think on G28, especially if wrong or possible wrong air gap etc..

LOL you are mixing up G68 with those harnesses I have to make you? FYI: I'm still waiting for Wurth WSO out of Germany. :banghead:

Okay not G68!
And your still an ASS! LOL:)

Why no codes??????

Okay I just read why no codes.

I go with timing jumped then. :(

I'm no expert... but that thing sounds WRONG when cranking - potentially like when timing is out ;)

AYE SIR!

Joking aside, i have had the ecu turned over to the stock program, not sure if thats what you meant or you meant throw a stock ecu in there (Unfortunately i dont have a spare at the moment)

When the rain stops i will pull the whole valve cover and timing chain cover off again.

How would i go about checking to see if the valves are in time?

EDIT: i see a post that stan posted on vwvortex, the nothes on each end of the cam have to face eachother, got it. as long as it doesnt rain tomorrow ill check this again.

I sent you a link on the basics and it clearly show the tool installed on top of the head and pins of tool in the slots of both cams.
All this of coarse with timing marks for timing belt lined up and installed.
You need the tool you can't just let them look like they face each other.
I myself would want the tool.

Good Luck

Well I pulled it all apart again, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, other than a piece of the failed HPFP stuck in one of the oil valleys in the head(see video link).
https://youtu.be/FGaAqM2r6Iw

Set the belt to the timing marks on both crank and cam and the Cam's look to be in time( can't tell for sure without the tool)

Cam adjuster checked out good it turns with the Cam's and everything.
