Just waded through the downloaded manual which has been writen by geeks for geeks with an assumption that all the jargonesse is readily understandable, what \i was hoping for was, Step one..... do this but sadly the autoscan is ok but getting to more revealing data involves a mastery in double geek So if I plug it in and take the car for a drive will it record other data I can access

No, it won't record any data unless you explicitly ask it to.

Please post your Auto-Scan so we know what kind of car you have and how it's equipped & configured, and then tell us what you'd like to do.

I read how to do that some where although it will take some time to find it again, like I said no logical sequence to this at all, I will have a go at it tomorrow

For DSG, it's done the same way, but you would choose [02-Auto Trans] instead of [01-Engine].

"Oil Quality" is in the Instrument Cluster. It's VWAG's terminology and it's a bit misleading. It determines/reflects whether the vehicle is set to fixed or flexible service intervals, not the actual quality of the oil in the crankcase.
