Hello All,
I just picked up a 2015 S4 6MT and trying turn off the "gear shift indicator" in the Driver Information System. It constantly wants me to upshift and is very annoying! I have gone through all options in the MMI and could not find an option to turn it off. I also do not have a "instrument cluster" option when I go into "Car". I am at a loss! Please VCDS gurus help me out! I can post auto-scan too in the morning.

1) Post your autoscan :)
2) Go to cluster (17), long coding, byte 01. The helper will have the info you need to turn it off. It should have been off by default.
3) Since it appears someone was in there before, do you have the oil temp/lap timer enabled? If not, I highly recommend it :) It's in long coding byte 01 as well.

Hi Eric, thank you for the response. I will be posting the auto-scan in the next couple days. I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by "help will have the info you need to turn it off" I am very new to VCDS, just got it a month ago.

I do in fact have the oil temp/lap timer enabled, used Carista to do that, but want to get the know how and saviness to use Ross-tech for all these changes now. But not even sure what "long coding byte 01" is or where it is, and am nervous to mess something up!

Thanks again!

Hello All,
Thank you for the advice on how to turn off my manual gear indicator. I got as far as:
[Select]
[17-Instruments]
[Coding]
[Long Coding Helper]

I then clicked on Byte0-1 drop down menu, and I see several options: See pic below:

How do I know which to choose? 00, 01, 02, 03 ?

Also, for reference, here is my autoscan from my 2015 Audi S4 6MT:

Any idea the one fault found in [19] CAN-Gateway ?

I also need to get an inspection, so I figured I'd do a "Readiness" check and got this:

27752498_10100332350189916_6252813591120441582_n.jpg

"Evaporative Emissions failed / incomplete."

Only thing I can think of, is dealer installed a new battery at 53,820mi before I picked up, and I have only driven about 200 miles since.

Thanks all for your help!

You need to click on Byte 1. Your picture is from Byte 0. :)

The intermittent Optical Databus fault in the Gateway: If that were a significant problem, it would produce symptoms in your infotainment system.

Evap Readiness: The car may not have seen the correct conditions to perform the test. You could try forcing it, but personally, I don't think I would at this point.

Hmm...what exactly is "Byte01" ?
At the 4) Byte 0 --> Is that what you are referring to ?

or 1) 83BD09......

Sorry for being such a noob!

Look at the line in Long Coding Helper that's labelled 3)

The first byte is Byte 0. It has a value of 83. The next byte is Byte 1 has a value of BD. Click on it.

Also, the line labelled 4) will conveniently show you which Byte you're currently editing.

You'll see a bit labelled: "Shift Suggestion (Economy) active". Un-check it, then exit Long Coding Helper and click [Do it!] on the main Coding screen.

Hi Uwe, so last question and I think we've got it! After un-checking the "shift suggestion (economy) active" box, when I exit and click the [Do it!] , I get the following message:

27867489_10100332544226066_5641288447831966505_n.jpg

And I am not sure what to do here! And don't want to take a guess and do something wrong!

Thanks!

Try [No] first and see if it will accept the coding change anyway. If so, there's no "who done it".

If that doesn't work, try [Yes] or try [Cancel]. If it accepts the coding change with [Yes] then there's an obvious "who done it" in there. If you use [Cancel], you could put more subtle non-zero numbers for Importer and Equipment Number.

FWIW, the above dialog is documented at the very bottom of the Coding Page in the VCDS product manual.

I selected "no" and it accepted the coding change! Not sure what you meant by "who done it" but nevertheless, thank you for all your help!

Workshop Code, Importer, and Equipment Number identify who last made changes to things like coding and adaptation values in a module. The dealers' tools have fixed values for these which are sent every time. VCDS will try to be stealthy and just put back whatever was there to begin with, but lots of modules these days won't accept that, especially when one or more of the fields is all zeros (as is the case in your instrument cluster). Hence the warning that the module may not accept changes unless you do something different.

First thing I would do is check whether the change to the bit in question really did "take".

Hi Uwe, I re-checked that the box for gear shift suggestion (active) stayed "un-checked" and it did. So I am assuming it "took" ?

Yep, sounds like it. Not sure why it would keep showing the upshift suggestion then.
