I have installed my foglights but now need to code them. I used pins C3 (Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SRKC3) and C9 (Leuchte16BLK SLB25BLK SL KC9) on the BCM/CECM but am having a hard time coding it in. Pins B5 and B45 are not on my BCM, so I am using a different channel. Initially I was going to use the front side marker lights but would prefer not to lose that function.

My CECM part number is 5Q0 937 087 Q, is it even possible to have foglights with this or should I just buy a different CECM?

I am using HEX+CAN with VCDS 18.1

Sorry, I meant to follow up but I got distracted by reading a manual.

I was able to get the bulbs to function but as soon as I drive away the fog lights will blink then stay off and then I get an error message on the dash and the "CAR" menu in the center display.

Here is the adaptations and what I have changed:

Code:
C9 - Lasstyp set to 23 allgemeine Scheinwerfer
C9 - Lampendefektbitposition set to 38
C9 - Fehlerort mittleres Byte DTC-DFCC set to 22

C9 - Lichtfunktion C through H - Set to Not Active
C9 - Dimmwert AB - Set to 100
C9 - Dimming Direction AB - Set to maximize
C9 - Dimmwert CD, EF, GH - Set to 0
C9 - Lichtansteuerung HD AB - Set to Always

C3 - Lasstyp set to 23 allgemeine Scheinwerfer

^^^ I'm guessing, but (Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SRKC3) and C9 (Leuchte16BLK SLB25BLK SL KC9) are factory set to operate ONLY for LED tail-light fittings (they are the inner turn-signal Leuchte-sets). These 2 x Leuchte-sets are not intended for incandescent lamps. Have you installed LED front fogs or incandescent? If the latter - I wonder if the threashold settings for lamp monitoring can accomodate the higher currents?

If your retro-fitted fogs are LED, try changing Lasstyp to 6 - LED Lichtmodul.

Good idea... I only have incandescent bulbs in there for the moment but I guess I'll be upgrading to LEDs sooner than planned! It does seem like a circuit protection scheme is superseding my settings (which I expect since like you said this particular circuit is for LED lights).

The LED bulbs I ordered have a "black box" attached to a wire that goes to the LED on one end and the other end goes to the regular plug, do I need to change the Lasstyp to 6- LED if I install that type of bulb?

Don, I am very thankful for your thorough documentation... it helped me understand the lighting settings much better!

^^^ "black box"? hmm..... normally LEDs have a simple series resistor as ballast for electrical current flow. Yours sounds like they might have a constant current ciruit (very fancy).

Here's the factory wattage numbers for an OEM LED tail light fitting.

EXODCGR.png

As you can see, "Section 2" has a LED cluster with a load of 5.5 Watts for the inner turn signal. So, I suspect that the lamp monitoring ciruit in the BCM for pins #3 & #9 on the C socket is tailored for this electrical load.

I suggest that you make sure that your LED fog lamps have a watt value around this number. And yes - change the Lastyp channel to the LED setting

Don, the LED bulbs I ordered are these:

The other circuit I was going to use boxed in red (another user in the golfmk7 forums, Basemodel, used it) was for the NAR front side marker lamps, would you happen to have the watt rating that circuit can handle? I don't want to lose that functionality and I may just go back and switch C3 and C9 to pins B10 and B21.

6BODBFb.jpg

I am also trying to avoid adding relays but I think if all the above fails I will install a relay triggered by pins C3 and C9 (assuming they are 12V) for each of the front fogs.

EDIT: I may be straying off the main topic here but would you also be able to tell me what pin the light in the blue box is linked to? It is a rear side marker light but since I have converted to the RoW outer taillights I no longer have them and would like to use that pin/channel set for LED rear fogs.

Chimuel: I must warn (again) that my hypothesis is just that. Your retrofit is "innovative" - I've not heard of anyone doing this before, so I'm just guessing (the BCM has 3 x pin sizes which infer electrical current capacity - I suspect that C3 & C9 are the smallest size pins)

So a few comments on your last post above. My knowledge of NAR models isn't good but I believe that B10/B21 pins are intended for the orange "parking lights" below the orange reflector on US cars with Halogen lights. I have quite a few "yanky" cars in my database and the Leuchte-sets for these pins are invariably set-up for LED lamps. But I was able to find a NAR admap that had the lasstyp channel set to 8 - allgemeine Glühlampe 12W (2016 Sport Wagon S) for B10/B21. The normal incandescent fog light on a mk7 is a H11 fitting with a 55 Watt lamp. But if you are retrofitting a LED lamp into the fog light base, there does appear to be more headroom in these pins

As to your suggestion for a relay sub-circuit - you could have the opposite problem (i.e. open-circuit error, instead of short-circuit error). The operating current for the coil in a 12V electo-mechanical relay is typically of the order of 100 milli-amps. The lamp monitoring circuits on C3/C9 may see this small current as an open ciruit - so you might need to add a resistor in parallel with the relay coil to fool the monitoring ciruit. A bit of basic theory: the expected load on C3/C9=5.5 Watts=V^2/R. Assuming a nominal rail voltage of 13V, R=14 ohms. Be aware that the long term heat dissipation of this resistor will be 5.5 Watts, so to keep everything cool, perhaps choose a 20W resistor. The added resistor might not be needed (try without first), but the calculation might be useful if this is not the case.

Don! Thanks for the write up. Amazon pulled through with same-day delivery and now I have fully functional front fog lights! The lights worked when I had Lasstyp set to 10 and Dimmwert was set to 100. I have gone ahead and changed those two settings to Lasstyp 6 and Dimmwert 127 to tidy up the programming.

C3 and C9 pins are exactly the same size as the B5, B45, B10, and B21 pins so I thought there would be higher headroom for amperage --my wiring harness is OEM with the proper pins.

I am very glad I did not need to add relays, that was my last resort! --My engineering background would have come in handy but I'm a little rusty after having worked in IT for a few years now.

Only issue I am running into now is that when I have the light controls pulled to the first detent, after I start driving the fog lights turn off and only turn on to the side I am turning to when I turn the steering wheel. I imagine I set the cornering lights on, should I change the "B" in the AB pair to "not active"?

Thanks for the insight and responses, much appreciated!

^^^ well done!!!
Yes - Abbiegelicht links/rechts is the leuchte command for "cornering lights". Set them to not active to disable (the cornering lights will only work if the car's speed is below a threshold value)

So I talked to the boss (my wife) and she said she liked the cornering lights. I was wondering if I could reach a nice medium and have it so that the foglights are dim (say, about 50% intensity) and go to 100% when they are used for cornering or when I override it by pulling the light switch to activate the rear fogs. Is that possible? What should I program?

^^ A man after my own heart - I always consult my current lifetime partner (wife) before making changes to my mk7 !!;)

The following values should result in the lamps @ 50% when operating as front fog-lights only and @ 100% when used as cornering lights, or when turned-on in conjunction with rear fogs:

Don

PS: I make no judgement as to whether this arrangement is road-legal up there in the land of the free (I have never understood your DoT rules)- you will need to satisfy yourself in this regard

I just ask my wife afterwards whether she likes what I've done. That counts, right?

PS, Don, your image doesn't work.

Don,

I tried the settings you showed but I couldn't get it to take. I may have to test it when the vehicle is in motion.

Don,

Any reason I should not separate these two?

C3/9 - Lichtfunktion A - Set to Nebellicht links
C3/9 - Lichtfunktion B - Set to Abbiegelicht links

I was thinking of setting Abbiegelicht links to Lichtfunktion C and setting Lichtfunktion B\D to not active. I have an issue where if I activate the front fogs, they do not turn on at all unless I turn on the rear fogs as well.
