07 Q7 4.2 TDI engine run away

This morning after dropping the kids off at school I had the scare of my life. I pulled away from the intersection and accelerated like normal and I noticed it started to knock just a bit I didn't think anything of it when all of a sudden the Revs took off and continued to climb even with my foot off the throttle. I put it in neutral and shut it off as fast as I could but not before I saw the tach go past the 6k mark. It did shut down when I hit the button to turn it off and I got it off to the side of the road. I was surprised to not see the engines guts layed out all over the road to be honest. I checked the oil and fluid levels everything was fine. Turbos were both dry. I got back in it and tried to crank it which it did slowly at first than spun over like it normally does just wouldn't fire. It took me a good 5-10 minutes of cranking it on and off to get it to fire and I drove it home like nothing happened no noises no smoke no running rough. pulled the codes out of it when I got home and was a bit stumped. first code that popped up was an interesting one p0219- Maximum engine speed exceeded engine warranty VOID! freeze frame of 5334 rpm 4.6nm 68.4km/h time .10ms pressure 483.0 bar. Also had p2196 Signal too high (rich) lambda sensor B1 S1. freeze frame on that had me a bit confused also as it was 3612 rpm 586.7nm 67.3km/h duty cycle 100.2% mass air/rev 1110.4 mg/str. I don't think its the turbos to be honest I think its somehow overfueling but why? It just isn't making any sense. engine just turned 120k miles.

Got to spend a bit of time with it today and do a bit of poking around. There isn't a lot of information out there on these engines as they just aren't that common (I don't know why they aren't they are a ball to drive) Turns out the oil level was over full by a lot. I dumped it as it was due to be serviced anyway and took over 15L out of it (holds 9-9.5 to begin with). Turns out that differential pressure sensor is causing it to try to regen all the time and these don't have a separate injector for the DPF's they use the engine injectors on the exhaust stroke. So now I am stuck with the decision to either delete the DPF's (don't need them they weren't required for that year) or pull the transmission and replace the £30 sensor.

Was the oil contaminated with diesel fuel to a degree raising that sump level and run away or was it actually overfilled?

Could be leaky or stuck injector......

Add a good lubricity additive to fuel.

contaminated with diesel. It failed the drip test on a plain sheet of paper with flying colors and when it came out it looked like water and definitely smelled like diesel once it was in the drain pan. injectors all look good on VCDS. I'm going to run it in a bit and see what it does now that its got fresh oil in it and at its proper level. I didn't fill it to the full line this time around I left it in the middle so I can keep an eye on the level and see what it does. I ordered 2 new differential pressure sensors too (might as well do both while I have the trans pulled down). Going to try to lower the tail of the transmission and see if I can sneak my arms up in there to change the sensors out.

I would observe VCDS blocks to see if any type of balance indication is possible and if not remove injector lines and units for complete inspection.
You could also measure exhaust manifold banks for a colder port with temp gun or watch with infrared camera like I do.
You don't want to risk filling the sump with such fuel contamination because this will be the kiss of death for turbo's and engine life.
Do yourself a favor and save that V8 before it becomes FUBAR !

The injector balance was one of the first things I checked and all are pretty much dead nuts equal % wise in the measuring blocks. It’s tough to figure out what is what in the measuring blocks on VCDS too as there just isn’t that much information out there for that engine and it doesn’t tell you what it what for most of the blocks. Most dpf stuff is in the 60-70 range for every other vag diesel this one is I think 102-106. It’s saying the dpf is full (it isn’t I’ve checked it) I don’t know how long that sensor has been like that trying to get it to regen when it doesn’t need to. I haven’t owned it for all that long either which makes it even harder to figure out what is going on as I don’t know what is truly normal for it.

UPDATE
no need to further diagnose I took it out for a drive around the block and it seized up. I guess the damage was already done. Now to search for a replacement lump.

That sounds familiar. Recently I had 2007 A6 3.0 tdi with same problem. The customer said that car just catapulted on its own on the highway. It turned out that it was constantly trying to do regen. In the end oil was so diluted from diesel that it passed by seals on the turbo and ........ I drained around 16l of fluid from the sump. But in this case engine survived.

I'm going to try to pull the DPF's off it tomorrow I went out and started it today and it was quiet as a mouse but wasn't running right. I may just have a blocked up DPF on one of the banks. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping. I did find a company local that will pull the motor refurb it and reinstall with 2 new turbos for £5k all said and done if it is indeed the engine. I was looking today and I don't think I can get the sump off without pulling the motor to check the crank and rod bearings.

If it is the DPFs then be sure to replace them if you'll need an MOT test after May 2018, from 1st May 2018 DPFs not being present will be an MOT fail under the new test guidelines.

They have always been a fail. If done right they have no idea they have been gutted. This being a 2007 they aren't even required that year Audi designed and built this motor with them so they were added when not required. This motor doesn't use a down stream injector to inject diesel into the exhaust instead it has an extra injection cycle on the exhaust stroke which honestly is not a great thing for any engine it washes the cylinders down and dilutes the oil. Poor setup all around.
