This person is local to me. He's not an interface owner, but I'll be helping him. I asked him to post here because I don't know what might be necessary to fix the Audi MMI after a power loss. I don't yet have an Auto-Scan; I was hoping to fix him up in one trip.

First thing I would do is recode BMM so that it knows a new battery has been installed.
If it's not a serialized battery, choose one of similar spec and increase the existing serial # by 1.
Then enable hidden menu if not already:
[07 - Control Head]
[Adaptation - 10] -> Channel 8
change 0 to 1
Use this hidden menu at your own risk.
Caution: Keep away from the "Bootloader"
Reboot MMI with Tel+Center Dial+Upper right
Press and hold Car and Setup simultaneously to access hidden menu.
Make sure Charisma is enabled and reboot MMI.

Excellent point. This is why I wanted to consult with Audi gurus first.
Okay, we should be able to get that done.
Is this something that commonly happens on battery disconnect? It's certainly common to lose adaptations like window/seat position, but I've not known of cars in the past that lose installed-equipment data. I'm curious if this is normal or abnormal for this car, so I know what I'm getting into.

It's not something that happens every time, but has been known to happen.
Usually if the battery is not in great shape to begin with things like this occur more often.
Anything flaky on a D3 is almost always battery, which is why I'm so fervent about checking the freeze frames.
It's also surprising how many are running around with original batteries still !
I think the tractor sized battery used in A8 and Phaeton hide issue due to sheer capability.
Good point on the windows - one touch up/down may need to be relearned.

Okay, just wanted to make sure I was probably dealing with a known scenario instead of a possibly defective MMI or suspension.
In the case of the Phaeton dual-battery setup, the battery controller can hide a multitude of sins, but it doesn't TELL ANYONE that it's doing so. Things just start acting more and more strangely over time, until one day your car won't start because both batteries are toast and it's out of workarounds. If there is one thing on the Phaeton that I think was designed badly, that's it. It has all the intelligence and hard relay controls needed to temporarily help you out of a jam, but doesn't tell the driver OR the dealer if it's having to do so frequently.

Assuming nothing was horribly wrong to begin with you should be OK
Clear all DTCs, run suspension through it's paces including jack mode, and if nothing shows up after a couple DCYs you're good.
Based on the age you likely will get a telematics battery DTC unless the OnStar has been removed.
Also don't be surprised by an SDARS DTC about not being activated - ignore that.

In addition to the great suggestions so far you may want to use the LCH to check the additive value of channel # 001 to see if +00064 = Adaptive Air Suspension installed (PR-1BK) is still present. I don't think 4E0-910-7xx-07.lbl is encrypted so you can check that out ahead of time.

Got a look at the car today. It showed up with all zeros coding, but correctly equipped in adaptation 001/002. It also had DTCs for incorrect coding and component protection. I was able to correct the coding value to 00003, and that allowed us to clear the incorrect coding DTC. However, the component protection DTC is stuck, which I understand is typical.Assuming nothing was horribly wrong to begin with you should be OK
The owner also has a 2006 A8L and says he swapped the MMI modules between the two at some point for troubleshooting an unrelated issue. He says they're back in the correct original cars now. This would account for CP going off, but it's interesting that it stays on even when restored to its original home.
We can't get into the hidden service menu at all. It's turned on with VCDS, indeed, it was turned on already and the owner had used it in the past. I tried several different things including reboots, turned it off and on, etc. I can't help but think component protection is hurting us here, but the owner asserts it worked after the swap back. He had the key sequences memorized so I tend to believe him.
Any thoughts?

I can't think of a single time when I heard of someone trying to get in diag menu with CP activated.
He/she is going to need to get it removed anyway for the vehicle(s) to function properly.
