Greetings,

I have developed an issue with my DSG since yesterday where it just did what I'd call a "neutral dump" where it somehow falls out of "gear". In other words, I was cruising along and it was as though the transmission went from Drive to Neutral where the engine RPM shot straight up. I brought the car to a stop and placed the shifter in Park, but couldn't get it out of Park. I switched the engine off, but couldn't restart as though the interlock was preventing me from being able to do so. I did a combination of locking and unlocking the car with the key-fob and clearing the error codes using a third party tool that I had on-hand at the time. The car started and I was able to complete my journey problem free. One of the errors I saw on the dashboard at the point the issue occured was something about the brakes overheating (which was impossible on the basis that I was previously driving up a slight incline after sitting in traffic).


Fast forwarding to today: I drove my car to work issue free. I did the VCDS clutch adaptation (group 60) since both the engine and DSG was at operating temperature in the parking lot. I did not do a test drive.

Later this evening (going home time) when I drove out the parking lot, I noticed the car was stuck in first gear and the PRNDS lights were blinking to alert me to a DSG error. The DSG does not select a gear when I place it in Reverse. I pulled out the VCDS to do a scan on the car below. I checked all fuses and those were good. I haven't tested the relays as yet.

It is important for me to declare that the DSG transmission fluid is due for a change now and as such I'll have to get it done this weekend.
I'm just trying to avoid the thought of a mechatronic failure as that would be a repair bill that would be difficult to swallow. It just seemed weird that the car took me to work quite fine (changing gears and everything). Now it just only goes into Reverse briefly when I clear ALL the error codes from all the modules (before flashing the PRNDS lights again then getting stuck in neutral). In Drive, the car stays in first gear so I can't even complete the documented test drive procedure. There needs to be an easier method of draining the DSG fluid other than pulling the bung underneath the DSG. I'm wondering if there is a way for the majority of it to be siphoned out of the filter hole up top underneath the battery. I don't have the fancy dealer tool to drain the "inner" reservoir.

I'm in Jamaica, so ordering and importing one is an arm and a leg. The car have an error message about "brakes overheating, check service manual", even though the car has been parked for hours. I suspect that it is an electrical issue. Which component other than fuses and relays should I be checking first? Where is the brake temperature being measured exactly?

Is the battery OK? I ask because I had an early (2004) A3, 3.2 DSG and I had the 'neutral dump' 3 times in the time that I owned it, and every time it happened it was shortly after start-up when the battery had been on the low side.

It had a battery drain problem that got worse as it got older, never did work out why but (car's gone now so doesn't matter). It was OK if used every day or two but if left a week or so the battery would be low on charge, usually it would still start but then it, it would (sometimes) cycle through multiple errors; steering, ABS, coolant etc. they would all clear after maybe a minute and it would be OK but on the 3 occasions where the gearbox messed up it happened shortly after such an event.

Each time after I switched off and restarted it was fine.

I looked into mechatronic unit replacement at the time but fortunately mine never needed it (maybe would have later?) expensive new but can be repaired by some specialists for a fraction of the price.

I've suspected my battery for months. Sometimes the car will do a very slow start randomly once every month. My battery goes through batteries quite frequently (completely dead and can't crank).

I got a random TPMS low light as though it was reset, and one Xenon headlight will sometimes go out and be re-lit quickly as though the ballast was failing. Swapping the ballasts for testing does not rectify the issue (the bulbs are new). Some errors that I do get using a third party tool (OBDeleven) insufficient voltage for some modules, but the situation doesn't stay long enough when I scan with VCDS. In Jamaica, we don't have specialists who "repair" mechatronic units. The dealer (ATL Jamaica) will only do custom orders for new mechatronic units from Germany. Before I buy a brand new battery for testing, I just want to have an idea which relays control the distribution of power to the rest of the car. I'm willing to bet that it is a relay issue that is causing all this. I had a battery test done on the existing battery where a 500-Amp load was applied to it and the voltage did drop to 11.xx volts. It starts the car, but I don't know if it is enough to get everything else going once the alternator kicks in. I have done no testing whatsoever of the alternator, however my third party app claims that my terminal voltage is 14.1 with the engine running (where it used to be between 13.5-13.8 volts before).

Hmmm lets see....... what's the icon say? Oh yeah RTFB and JPPSG.

Trace for bad grounds & fuses using WD and read SSP too, for design and function & if in oppositional order to question.

By all means........... take all apart and inspect everything, further using RTFB and don't forget to purchase all the precision testing measuring devices and other tools to fix the DSG, versus changing the entire DSG unit like a dealer does.

Not going to be a battery on this unless it is shorted but I don't see a whiff of codes for low voltage unless you are supplying FOD scans

If you are certain it is the mechatronic and can manage without the car for whatever the turn-around time is then there are places here (UK) that can repair for significantly less than the new price, may not be practical though due to leaving the car hanging around with the gearbox apart plus the shipping costs?

Wouldn't hurt to fit a new battery if yours is suspect. My A3 got through 3 batteries in the time I had it and when I got rid of it, the battery was definitely on the way out again.

When you say shorted, do you mean an internally bad cell, or are you suggesting a wiring fault. I'll try a doing a jump-start with another battery to see if the issues are the same. The scans I've submitted are for my car which was previously flashed but restored to stock DSG and ECU settings months ago.

My car has been through 4 batteries now (same brand) and I've only had the car for 2 years (daily driven). I'll try doing a jump-start (just to ensure that the current is good) then do the auto scan again.

Then something is taking far too much current when the ignition is off.

My previous Audi RS4 was only driven once a week and the battery on that lasted 7 years, so 4 batteries in 2 years is very wrong.

Yesterday, I thought I had a "breakthrough" when I used the circuit tester to find fuses in my car un-blown, yet un-powered (no 12 volts). I then realised that these were just spare fuses sitting in the lot. I no have to do some basic testing of the relays, but first need to learn how each of them work (by relay number).

If I select reverse, then I get the error code about an implausible disengagement. I can't seem to get to group 60 or 61 to do the adaptation again.

Those harmless engine faults existed long before the issue occurred.
My priority is in fixing the transmission issue at the moment

The odd thing I've noticed is that I can only access Group 60 and 61 in the transmission control module when the engine is off, but not when the engine is running.

If I start the engine while accessing group 60 or 61, then I'm kicked out with the error code saying something to the effect that this is unavailable.

By Thursday this week, I should have the funds to order a new clutch kit and mechatronics unit.

Let me see in this short break if I can ask the right question in run on sentence question okay? ;)

Did you know that some basic settings tests in VCDS are restricted & because they are not supposed to be done while the vehicle is running or without a login & that may reflect it in the stack of the controller or in some cases even when they are not, someone at RT figured it out that someone would do this and not follow directions of the RTFB and try anyway so they disabled certain requests in program?

I was unaware of this at the time. I thought it was something possibly relay related under the dashboard or engine bay. It wasn't after I had replaced the complete DSG (then did some reading) I understood this.


I forgot to close this thread years later by admitting as you stated, new dual-clutch kit, mechatronic unit, and fluid with filter change, didn't fix the issue (but allowed me to drive the car normally for an additional day).
I had ended up having to order a complete DSG (which included all above mentioned components) to resolve the issue.


However, I disagree with group 60 and 61 being made unavailable with a running engine as it would be impossible to do the adaptation although I entered the security code.
Thanks for reminding me that I need to post up the new clutch-kit and mechatronic unit somewhere online as they have been only used for under 24 hours to drive about 9 kilometers from the dealer to my house.
