I have a 2018 Atlas SEL Premium, with the 3.6L FSI V6. It comes with auto start-stop, like many cars these days. I seem to be part of a minority that actually likes the feature. Even though I know how to permanently disable it, I keep it on. But sometimes, start-stop doesn't kick in at a stop, and I don't clearly understand why, based on the reason given in the instrument cluster.

So my questions here are sort of the opposite of normal: how can I find out more about things that prevent start-stop from working?

  • "System/power needs": See this frequently. Sometimes it's obvious why (high electrical consumption, accessory demand, trailer hooked up, etc). Sometimes it's not. HVAC has its own category and it's clear when it's a HVAC demand.
  • "Traffic situation": See this every once in a while. Sometimes it's in stop-and-go traffic, but occasionally not. I can't figure out the criteria or inputs for this one. I feel like there has to be more than just too many back-to-back stops. Is there feedback from the forward camera for traffic, or traffic lights, or nav system intersection type feedback, or data from the nav's XM traffic data feed, or...?
I don't think my Atlas is misbehaving, I just want to better understand the system. I haven't yet found a good SSP or other reference that goes into deep detail.

Often when start/stop does not work in my VW Up, it is because of battery charge level.
I also like start/stop ;)

^^^ I know absolutely nothing about the 2018 Atlas SEL Premium, with the 3.6L FSI V6. I had to google it- it looks like a very nice (big?) car. Anyhow, a couple of sites that I visited, mentioned that the Atlas was built on the MQB platform. This being the case, I wonder if the Atlas might have the same feature that exists on its smaller MQB cousin (mk7) that tells the driver exactly why SS isn't engaging. It's a screen that is accessible from the MIB and it looks like this:

So - each of the items on the list above is a reason why SS is not engaging -the list is updated each time that the car is stopped and SS is enabled. Notice the "human-head" symbol next to some entries - these are factors that are at the digression of the driver. Incidentally, the first entry in the list is the message that appears because of the coding tweak to disable SS - which as you will know, works by fooling the module into thinking that the temperature is too high (the temperature method), or that the voltage is too low to restart the car (voltager method).

Does the Atlas have a similar screen?

hmm......... you certainly do ask the big questions!!! Good thinking - I'm not sure. Perhaps the logic is that if the car has been automatically stopped by SS and the driver subsequently unfastened her seat-belt to get out of the car, SS is prohibited from restarting the engine when the driver takes her foot off the brake pedal. But I'm guessing!!

I have not. I didn't realize that was part of the stored history. That seems like a good next step for understanding more detail behind the "system/power needs" catchall.

Battery charge level makes sense sometimes, but I've gone on relatively long drives where I notice it persistently. I'll even have highway drives where I come to a stop at the end of an offramp and still have "system/power needs" pop up. I suppose it's possible there's some alternator DF programming to lower output at cruise, to try to hit a fuel mileage goal. Anyway, I'll get a battery history dump tonight and post it here.

I haven't seen any way to get that info from the MIB, but I do always see one reason (not multiple) shown in the instrument cluster. I can see things like seatbelt unbuckled, traffic situation, HVAC needs, and the ubiquitous system/power needs.

I've verified my Atlas responds to the well-known "voltage" tweak, if applied. I have it at the factory default.

A couple days ago, when Googling this again using slightly different terms, I ran across an interesting Atlas "selling points" document that has a lot of detail.

Pages 7 and 8 are highly informative. In particular, it led me to figure out the triggering condition for "traffic situation". It's what prevents auto-stop from kicking in repeatedly when very slowly creeping forward in traffic or other fine maneuvering. The vehicle has to exceed 2MPH since the last auto-stop in order to be eligible again. Over the weekend I verified that slow-creep does correlate with the "traffic situation" displayed reason, it's repeatable.

Side note: for being a dealer-only site, vwwebsource.com sure does leak a lot of open-linkable content to Google's index. Probably unintentional on their part. Interesting stuff. Be sure to go past the first page or two.

hmm.........not sure for a yanky Atlas - but on the version of Golf mk7 that we get down in the very deep south :), the screens are enabled by this (I think):

  • ENG122227-ENG117678-Car_Function_Adaptations_Gen2-menu_display_Start_Stop_reasons_over_threshold_high> activated

Here's a copy of the instruction-set that I thieved from an early post of mine ( on my local Aussie forum) - it was written for a Golf mk7:
  1. With the car running, press the Car button on the escutcheon plate around the MIB center screen.
  2. The following screen should come-up. If you get this screen, press the area of the screen circled

    If the screen above does not appear when the "Car" button is pressed, then you will probably get something like the following screen
