not a car repair question,

this 2017 golf wagon offers an instrument panel display of the oil temperature.

I note a couple things, temperature displays "---" below 50c

and above that temp, it seems to read 11-12 degrees c below that reported by VCDS for oil temperatures.

this is noted during warm-up, will look for opportunities to look at it when the engine is hotter.

any ideas why VW does this?

Where are you seeing the oil temperature in VCDS -- i.e. which module and what measuring value?

These track together

I saw but did not log, values for IDE00196 in the instruments controller

^^^^ My suspicion from a period of servitude working in an instrument laboratory as a fresh face youth (now many years ago) is that the operating range of the sensor is not designed for this lower temperature range. information to the driver about Oil Temperature is normally relevant at higher temperatures (this sensor is not about measuring the freezing point of the oil) , so I'm guessing that the sensor is "calibrated" above 50c. My assumption is that even if the display was tweaked to make the number appear below 50c, the value displayed would be meaningless because of the inaccuracy of the reading.

Nope. With UDS modules, this is probably possible, at least in principle, but implementing that would require major architectural changes in VCDS.

One would have to go digging into the details of the car. Is there only one sensor? For quite a long time, VW used a dual coolant temp sensor, with one sensing element connected to the instrument cluster and the other to the ECU. Two separate sensing elements would explain something of a discrepancy. Of course it's also possible that VW would manipulate the data being presented to the driver via the instrument cluster, much as they have done for decades with the coolant temperature gauge.

I took a look at logs from a ten mile drive in DC beltway traffic. Engine oil temp flattened out at 104c

most of the time I have the car display degrees f, (to please my wife)

104c is 219, which seems to be what I remember.

perhaps the instrument controller value is an average over some period of values reported from the engine controller.

I would have thought that would call for a different variable name.

but it seems I have the tools to answer most of my own question.
