Hello all, first post so be kind. I have a 2017 VW T6 Transporter which I realised after buying does not have deadlocking i.e. the ability to be locked so that the van can’t be opened by pulling an internal door release. VW’s name for this is Safelock and I believe it’s not available in USA for regulatory reasons but it’s very handy for making the vehicle more secure, and annoyingly seems to be standard on virtually every T6 on the market.

Changing my van for another one is not an option so I set about trying to convert and tried to find out the differences that would enable it. It turns out the BCM and the door control modules in the window motors are the same, but the door lock actuators aren’t, so I got hold of actuators with the same part nos as Safelock vans for the two front doors and the sliding door and then activated Safelock with VCDS.

My problem is that when I activate it, I am then unable to lock the doors with the internal switch, they just bounce up unlocked immediately after locking. If I then disable Safelock, everything is back to normal and I can lock the doors using the internal switch. From what I can see, I’ve fitted compatible parts, the van recognises when the doors are open and shut as the courtesy light comes on and the correct door shows on the MFD. I’ve tried every combination I can think of in byte 00 and I’m stumped on where to go next. Would appreciate any shred of inspiration from people who know about these things. Enclose the autoscan with Safelock activated showing the door error messages I get.

Edit: Sorry I’ve only just seen the Retrofit section and I should have put it there.

Welcome to the Forum - great first post Andrew.

Did you use a Wiring Diagram (WD) for the modification? There will be extra wires for the SAFE motors and the feedback microswitches. I presume these will go back to the door control modules; that look to be LIN slaves of the 09-Cent. Electrics module.

If you've done that, you may have to code the slave modules - there's a drop-down box on the coding screen if they are able to be coded.

Finally, sometimes the main part number of the door control modules are identical; but they have a different 'colour code' which has to be quoted when ordering. I know on Audi door modules, there's a little square printed on the module that's either half filled in or full filled in, depending on options.

I looked into this with my Tiguan AD (MQB).

The door lock unit is a slave of the door control module, and cannot be coded. The coding for safelock is done in the door control module, its only one bit, and in a few channels of the BCM.

So you either didnt change the coding in the door control modules, the BCM, or there is another bit in the drivers side door control module that needs to be changed.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll address what I have and haven't done so far

1) I did use a wiring diagram and it showed only one extra connection for Safelock, a blue wire on the sliding door, but when I opened it up the connection was already there and I followed it back to the door control module.

2) I have coded the door control modules, or rather I didn't need to (subsystems 1 and 2 of central electrics) as they were already the same as 3 other T6s I checked that came with Safelock from the factory. Just to be doubly sure I coded them the same as a 2018MY that differ in allowing mirror folding via the comfort closing - made no difference so put it back. It never occurred to me that there would be different door module versions with the same part number, what a minefield! I'll look into this as I took photos of the part number labels before putting the door cards back on.

3) The sections that I've found documented regarding locking are

Byte 00 Bit 0 Selective Central Locking (Single Door Locking) active
Byte 00 Bit 1 Central Locking WITHOUT SAFE-Function (Zentralverriegelung OHNE SAFE-Funktion verbaut)
Byte 00 Bit 2 Central Locking 2-motor-locks installed (Zentralverriegelung 2-Motoren-Schlösser verbaut)
Byte 00 Bit 3 Auto-Unlock (Unlocking when Removing the Ignition Key)
Byte 00 Bit 4 Auto-Lock (Automatic Locking above 15 km/h)
Byte 00 Bit 5 Central Locking installed
Byte 00 Bit 6 Central Locking via cylinder lock active (Zentralverriegelung über Schliesszylinder aktiv)
Byte 00 Bit 7 Central Locking 1-motor-locks with SAFE Function installed (Zentralverriegelung 1-Motoren-Schlösser mit SAFE Funktion verbaut)

Byte 04 Bit 1 Activation of control activation disabled for lock error
Byte 04 Bit 2 Internally lock via button driver's door
Byte 04 Bit 5 Central Locking Re-Locking (after 30 Seconds) active

Byte 07 Bit 0 Central Locking/Rear: Slidung Door Left installed
Byte 07 Bit 1 Central Locking/Rear: Slidung Door Right installed

Byte 10 Bit 3 Active display of "Safelock" in den Multi Function Display

I've tried experimenting with all logical combinations of these but nothing makes any difference - I can either have Safelock or internal locking but not both.

One other thing I'd note is that Safelock actuators don't have an extra motor, the existing motor is just turned a second time, moving a spindle along until it engages a lever that prevents the lock from being moved by the handle. I took a spare one apart to see how it works.
So I'll look into the door control module, I've also been advised to disconnect the battery long enough to reset the modules so I'll try that. I was hoping that maybe someone would know some magic undocumented bit that would make it all work, but life's not like that :D Thanks for the replies

Are these settings from a door control module or your BCM?

The bold lines are the ones i'd change, leaving the rest (or putting them back to) stock.

Internal lock via button drivers door seems to be what it is, doesnt have anything to do with safelock (We call the deactivation of the inside door handles when the car is locked from the outside 'Safelock', not deadlock. Every line you see that mentions Safelock is what you are looking for and safelock is not the locking of the vehicle when in motion or through the inside drivers door button).

Thanks for the reply, sorry yes it’s from module 09-Cent electronics on the BCM. I mentioned the meaning of Safelock in my first post, it’s just VWs name for deadlocking. Yes those are the bits I coded, though I also tried flipping some of the other ones I listed too, just to see whether they made any difference.

The reason Safelock is relevant to this is that my problem is if I flip the bits to activate Safelock, then that works fine, but the internal lock button stops working. If I flip them back to deactivate Safelock then the internal lock button DOES work (but obviously Safelock doesn’t) which is what I can’t get my head around. They’re obviously interacting in some way to make them mutually exclusive.

I’ve had it confirmed that my door control module does have the correct software and features and my BCM and lock actuators are fully compatible. I also tried pulling the power to reset as I’d been advised but that made no difference.

I seem to have run into a brick wall for coding options so the only thing I can think of to do is to pull the door cards off again and see whether I’ve inadvertently damaged a wire somewhere when I’ve been fitting the lock actuators.

Edit: Just to clarify your last part, the option to “lock via drivers door button” in the BCM just toggles the ability for pressing down the actual pop up button to control all locks rather than just the drivers door, it doesn’t affect the internal locking switch on the panel at the front of the door next to mirror/window controls. When Safelock is activated neither of them work, when Safelock is deactivated they both work.
