Sorry - but here is a quick rundown which has lead up to my post: I did have a P0456 code in September 2017. I replaced the Leak Diagnosis Pump because it was leaking. Now with this code (P0456) I replaced the gas cap with a genuine VW cap in early October 2017. Now here in November 2017 the same code has returned - which is the P0456 (again). Trying to take care of this EVAP thing once and for all.
The car tested is a 2009 (MK5) Jetta sedan 2.5l

Leak Detection Test on this ECU should be:
Cold Engine at idle:
Basic Settings, Group 202.
Allow engine to idle until:
Field 4 Displays: xxxxxx100
If the test does not start, loosen/ refasten the gas cap.
FWIW, if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on a faulty N80 valve.

I show this controller requiring multiple SVM sessions........
This is a 2.5 NA, with an assisted mechanical cam driven vacuum pump & that likes to fail.
If insufficient vacuum produced as a result of this pump, the LDP circuit will suffer a loss & not be able to pump the tank completely.
Before changing the N80 which Uwe put money on & indeed is a good bet, let's do a test by crimping the line to it and then run 0x01-04-071 in VCDS further to see if the pump makes the LDP achieved PSI to check the tank leak.
Isolation is key.........

"LDP ok" in fourth field but it will show you other data in fields if logged and observed.

Affirmative but the vacuum pump on the engine or auxiliary vacuum pump if supported, "if deficient" for supplied vacuum can cause this LDP pump to not function properly.
A good test is to crimp off the N80 and use a mechanical pump such as a mighty vac to supply the LDP with sufficient monitored vacuum.

Oh and I am willing to bet that your LDP was not bad ............I have yet to find a bad one as tested, unless due to collision damage.

Where did smoke come out on LDP .......the filter, the reed, a line, pump diaphragm or the case being cracked?
Any pictures of old unit and verified damage?
What line under hood did you use to inject smoke and was it under PSI or just static distribution?
