2006 Touareg trailer module

My T-reg came with the hitch but no module. I bought the factory module and installed it, but didn't have Vag-Com at the time to get the PCM to see the module. I've since bought Vag-Com, but can not for the life of me figure out how to get the PCM to see the module and turn the module on so I have trailer lights.

Currently the running lights "strobe" and the brake light will work, but I have no turn signals. I've not been able to see the module no matter what I've tried. I recently read that I may need the Long Hex Code Helper, and could never find how to open it until last week. I have not had the chance to try the LHCH yet.

This is an a first-generation T'Reg. It has no Long Coding.

Start by going to 19-CAN Gateway and recode it with the value that's already there, 0000006. Once that's done, exit the module gracefully and then turn the ignition off for a bit and back on. This causes that Gateway to rebuild its internal list of modules that are installed based on what modules it actually finds.

Our Touareg came with a trailer hitch and trailer brakes. I was nothing short of dumbfounded when it popped up on the MFD to tell me to check the trailer brake lights.

Unrelated to the direct topic but the Touareg is a great vehicle. Super comfy and capable. Love the ballsy V8. The only issue on the horizon is the (well documented) hard shift from 4-5 (and occasionally 5-4). It really doesn't do it often and if you watch the shift indicator on the MFD for the pending gear change and just don't be hammering it when it happens it shifts perfectly.

We're ordering the valve body assembly on Friday. Should put it to rest.

Had one of those about 10 years ago when they were brand new (we learned a lot from it). Didn't love the fuel consumption. Best we ever got was 18 and 12-15 was more typical.

The OP's V10 TDI has about the same HP as your V8 plus about 60% more torque. :cool:

Sidenote to the above: I enjoy watching people here in Texas (F350's, 3500's, etc) see me jerk a 10,000lb car trailer away like it wasn't even there with my "small" truck. Got to love that V10 torque!

Clear out all your faults after you do what I advised with the CAN gateway and then run another Auto-Scan so we can see what (if anything) is still unhappy.

Hmmm...
I checked all the fuses (both modules), all good. I've looked for a way to test the modules (my Bentley CD), but not had any luck there. It may be module replacement time.

Any other ideas?

Yeah, it could be a flaky module. But it could just as easily be a bad connection somewhere. This is an 8-9 year old vehicle. Time and weather can take their toll on electrical connections. I'd pull apart, inspect, and condition all connections between the cluster (where the Gateway is located in this vehicle) and the transfer case and the trailer module before I threw money into any new modules.

I'm ripping panels out now to check on connections and I'll pin everything I can out. This vehicle as you said is 8-9yrs old now, but it has been hangered it's entire life (no outside parking) so I'm sure if I do have any corrosion it should be minor. The truck wasn't driven hardly at all the last two years (bought a 911 4S) so it sat in the hanger more than it had in the past.

The towing module is the Westfalia that Bentley says needs to be coded. Can we do that in Vag-Com? Or should (after I check cabling) get a non-coded one?

The help and conversation is appreciated! I owe you a flight/ride in one of the other toys.

The trailer module itself doesn't show up in either of your scans. Until/unless it does, it can't be coded.

You've got a fork-tailed doctor/lawyer killer, right? I've never had a ride in one. Got a bit of time in a Mooney though, but that was a long time ago.

Got it. I wasn't sure if we had to "turn on" the module first. I will say that these body panels and trim are so interconnected you can't just take one off...I may change the interior color, I'm that far into it now (grin).

Actually. My old Bonanza was a V35 fork-tailed doctor /lawyer killer. I upgraded to an A36 a few years go. Now I have 6 seats and air-conditioning. It is like a 200mph Touareg and I get 15mpg too, just like the egg! You can google my number (N867LC) and see the new bird.

I remember fuel being under $2 as well. Right now 100LL is running about $4.75 - $5.50 a gallon. airnav.com can give you updated prices so I often will check there if I have to make a fuel stop.
