Hello,
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I have a 2011 Octavia RS TDI 170 (CEGA engine code)

The car has been so far been faultless in my ownership but I now have a niggling electrical fault that I cannot seem to get to the bottom of.

While travelling at speed on a motorway a few weeks ago I noticed the power steering (electric on this vehicle) felt like it was failing, steering went heavy then light then heavy and light again a few times.
The following day I also noticed that when pulling up at lights the car was idling high at just over 1000rpm.

Over the last 4 weeks I've been more aware of this and it's completely random, often the car idles higher than normal and the fans in the engine bar are running full, when the car is like this (and only then) then I get the intermittent power steering issue.

If I turn off the engine and restart then it's fine for a short while but soon comes back to this situation.

I've scanned the car and the only fault is shown below

If I clear the code then as soon as I notice the "situation" (car idling high again, fans running and intermittent flaky power steering) again, scan shows above code is present again, so it's definitely triggering my symptoms.

My car has a DPF but its not related to that, the high idle and fans you would expect during a regen but the car is not regenerating when this happens.

So far I've done the following myself

Battery professionally tested twice - OK
Alternator and output tested - OK
Continuity between alternator and battery - OK
Continuity between battery and fuse box - OK
Battery negative/earth cable continuity (also cleaned up connections) - OK
Battery terminals cleaned up - OK
Fuses in fusebox tested, removed and re-inserted a few times - OK

I've thus far drawn a blank and any advice or suggestions would be HUGELY appreciated.

Fit a brand new battery than recheck...

I can do, I was going to do that next to be fair but as my original battery tested fine on two proper battery testers at two different garages I figured it was fine?

Can they test fine and still have an issue??

Yes they can, and this fault is related to a battery issue, not to mention your symptoms can also be suspect-able of a bad battery.

Hi, OK So brand new Varta E44 in, cleared the code, started the car, within 5 mins it's back up idling high again, fans on, code logged again.

If I turn off ignition and turn back on its fine for a random amount of time then back again.

Hmm....... :/

There should be a black small gauge wire running from the negative battery terminal to the ECU that s the battery sensing wire. Check for damaged or loose connection broken wire you know the standard procedures.

Thanks for the reply.

I've had the negative/earth lead completely off and there's definitely no small gauge wire going anywhere. Do the later canbus tdi's definitely still have this? I thought I'd read that was only present on older cars?

I'll double check though.

Thanks

Does your negative terminal have a cap on it telling you not to connect jump leads to it. I have a 2010 a3 and this is present although from your scan I can't see address 61.

No nothing like that, a simple large gauge sheathed black short cable that goes from the battery to the body right next to the battery.

Oh right sorry I hope you get this sorted soon I know it would be driving me nuts. Someone should be around soon with a fix for you. I tried looking online to help you to no avail. Ended up finding your original post on briskoda instead ;)

It's a nightmare mate, I've literally trawled the internet and found probably 30-40 (posts in various languages) detailing this exact problem yet nobody has ever updated the posts with a solution.

It's so random and seems to be occurring with even more complete randomness, last night and today after fitting the new battery I've noticed I can leave my drive, drive 2 miles down the road and pull up at lights and it's idling high with fans on, drive another mile down the road pull up at lights and it's fine, continue 5 miles and fans are back on with high idle, drive 20 miles and it's fine....

Really need to try and get to the bottom of it. It's the steering that worries me most, it's not happening every time the idle is raised with fans on but it catches you by surprise as all of a sudden out of nowhere it's like the steering is trying to snatch the wheel out of my hands, mostly notice it doing slow manoeuvres but did get it at speed the other week on the motorway which is quite dangerous.

:/

If not the battery (which is very very suprising - however not a waste of money as a new battery is useful) than I would be more inclined to say a software issue in the BCM somewhere.

Check for water ingress to the engine controller causing corrosion & verify ground points directly.

Run auxiliary ground strap and B+ wire from alternator back to battery.

Change the voltage regulator in alternator or entire unit with freewheel clutch.

Thanks for the reply, hugely appreciated!

If you could elaborate a little on a couple of things that would bee greatly appreciated. I'm no mechanic or electrical engineer, just a DIY guy with limited knowledge.

  • Check the engine ECU for water ingress - check!
  • Verify ground points . Do you mean from the ECU loom or just in general check all the ground points in the engine bay?
  • Run auxiliary ground strap and B+ wire from alternator back to battery. So another ground from alternator to ground point and a new cable from alternator to battery positive while keeping the original ones in place?
  • Change the voltage regulator in alternator or entire unit with freewheel clutch. I've removed aux belt already and confirmed freewheel is good, not slipping or seized, I guess regulator is next then.

Thanks!

ALL

Your choice.
