I have fitted a Westfalier towbar and dedicated electric kit to my A6 C7 Avant, and need to code everything up. The Westfalier instructions for coding are for VAS 5051, so no use for VCDS.

It would be great if someone could walk me through what's needed.

The Westfalier instructions for coding are for VAS 5051, so no use for VCDS.
It would be interesting to see what they look like and to see just how "translatable" they are.

The obvious starting point would be to register the trailer module in the Gateway:
[Select]
[19-CAN Gateway]
[Installation List]
Scroll down to 69-Trailer and put a checkmark in the box.
[Save Coding]

Westfalier coding instructions for VAS 5051

Adjusting the coding
The AM code required can be found in the “coding supplement” on the Audi dealer portals (including ServiceNet).
– Connect a suitable vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system to the vehicle via an online connection, e.g. the vehicle
diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
– Select (Functions and Components) ((Funktions und Bauteilauswahl)).
– Select the “Direct input of AM code for vehicle alteration” (“Direkteingabe AM-Code für Fahrzeugumbau”) testing programme
from within Action Management (AM).
– When prompted, enter the corresponding code (050 200).
– Code the control unit in the self-diagnosis using the VAS tester:
• 69 trailer function
o 008 Codierung
􀂃 Masterbyte-Index (Hex-Code):
0. ...
1. 09 -> 00
2. 08 -> 00
3. ...
4. ... etc.
– Call up the fault memory of all control units and delete the “Undervoltage” (“Unterspannung”) fault as necessary.
– Test towing functions using a suitable tester (with load resistors) or a trailer.

OK, not terribly useful for the other modules.

For the trailer module, the instructions can be followed using VCDS.

Current trailer coding is:

01 09 08 00 00 00 00 00

They're suggesting you zero out byte 01 (current value 09) and byte 02 (current value 08).

Please stand by. Hopefully one of our European colleagues will be along with suggestions.

So ending up with 0100000000000000 ?
I'll update the CAN gateway in the morning, and try the suggested coding. Nothing to loose!

Yeah, for a retrofit of a non-retractable hitch, I believe 0100000000000000 makes sense.

You don't mention witch type towbar you have installed.

Instructions:
Disable start/stop with button (if installed)

Change WSC etc. to none zero in VCDS, see here.

[19-CAN Gateway] > [Installation list] > [69] > [Save coding]
See here. Uwe has explained this.

Explanation [Controller number] - New coding:
Code:
[09] - 2600201040349FE00181008300001D0C0F9DE70827090201000004606100
[46] - 013B0622A0B930008320090420010F470000000000000000000000000000
[01] - 12254012053601020000
[03] - 27A69F01E465F980FB00
[10] - 89C308
[6D] - 097205C011
[69] - 0100000000000000
[03] and [10] and [6D] need Secure Access before Coding.
[6D] = 20103

It could be a short wire on Towbar ECU connector, has to be changed.
Ask Westfalia if there is a problem with towbar ecu.

I've now updated the CAN gateway, and changed the trailer code to 0100000000000000, and all fault codes have now gone away. So it's now to recode the other modules. I had a peek in the parking sensor module, as I know this one does need recoding, and on the long coding helper there are 3 options for trailers. 1 Trailer without hitch 2 Trailer with manually removable hitch. 3 Trailer with pivot hitch.
Is 'trailer without a hitch' wiring loom fitted, but NO towbar fitted (ie for running a lighting board attached to bicycles hanging off a tailgate rack)
My towbar is manually removable with a key inserted into the side of the towbar, so presumably I need option 2?

Since doing this, NEtech has added to the thread.

When I get access to the car again, I'll try the rest of the coding.
03, 10, 6D need security access, is 20103 the login code for all 3 modules?
Also, disabling of the start / stop button is in the instructions, how is this done?
Thanks!

No the rest are showed when you go there.

Look at the buttons in you car, is there one for disable start/stop.

I think I got the wrong end of the stick on this! I thought this was a process to disable the main start/stop button, ie the 'ignition switch' during coding.
I do have a button to disable the start/stop the engine when vehicle is stationary feature, is this it?

This is a very useful thread as I have been looking at retrofitting a Westfalia detachable bar to the C7 allroad (MY13). I've been doing some homework before committing to buying anything yet and discovered something in the instructions for fitting the westfalia vehicle specific loom (305-385-300-113 for reference - its easily found at manufacturers website). The instructions show an option in the loom & module fitment if the car has trailer preparation from factory or not. The PR code for that is 1D8 and this wagon has it - not actually proved that by looking the rear right corner yet.

According to my understanding (and a bit of googling around other Audi forums) this means the car is pre-wired with the J345 trailer detection module (allegedly supplied by Westfalia as OE) where the T12m plug for fuses and brake light connection from J393 are wired up while a 2-pin plug (T2db on the OE diagrams for 1D8 option) for CAN connectivity is left dangling open until the day that the other side of trailer wiring is completed. This is also seen in a diagram for another vehicle specific loom supplied by UK towbar specialist pfjones.

This got me wondering as when I look at the wiring for PR-1D4 where the complete towbar is factory fitted - there is a T12n plug connection up to some extra warning lights (not in the dashboard presumably but I have no clue where*) and a contact switch (F355) as part of the swivelling BOSAL bar which tells the factory fitted controller when the hitch is locked in place.

The question is whether I can just buy the mechanical section of the Westfalia towbar, build or buy the loom for the 16-pin connection from J345 to the trailer socket and code up the OE trailer module as if it was for a detachable hitch i.e not swivelling and not expecting the switch or lamp connectivity.

Seems kind of crazy to have the trailer preparation module factory fitted then move the plug from that to a new vehicle specific controller just cos that comes bundled with the wiring to the hitch plug. It might also avoid another round of component protection fun. Of all the things in the car, I don't need a cold standby trailer recognition module.

First step might be to connect that 2-pin OE plug for the CAN bus and verify what trailer connector and coding is detected & changeable by VCDS.

I know CAN messages tell the PDC sensors and ESP/ABS when trailer is attached but presumably something lights on the dashboard as a visual reminder for the driver.

I am also wondering if I can manually control something simulating the F355 switch destined for the 'hitch locked signal' as most time the hitch will be used is for a bike rack so there is no need to change behaviour of ESP/ABS in that instance.

Some further investigation required.

* UPDATE - After a quick RTFM, I discovered the indicator lamps referenced on the OE trailer wiring diagram sit with the handle for extending or retracting the swivel bar - seems like when its locked up or down, the light is green, but when its in between the lamp is flashing red.

So I found this contender for the loom to complete a 1D8 optioned car into having the towbar completed.

Of course the price of that lovely OE loom is eye-watering - much more expensive than buying the vehicle specific kit from Westfalia, but it shouldn't be rocket science to clone it as there is only one 16-pin plug of any special note.

Quick update - stuck my head in the right rear corner and sure enough trailer preparation is there so that will save a lot of work. Turns out that 12-pin plug just sits in an empty binnacle waiting to be used so the trailer detection module is not equipped as I had assumed above. And yes there is a separate foam covered 2-pin plug for the CAN bus sitting beside the 12-pin plug. Thats all good as it saves a lot of time removing the rear inner trim to access J393 and those extra fuse points.

Added a pic of the C7 trailer prep. The red plug is T12m and the foam covered unplugged thing is T2bd. Gonna see if I can source the other 12-pin plug (T12n) and maybe experiment with the hitch locked switch to see if it gets me anywhere.
