I'm trying to do this procedure to my 2005 VW Passat TDI after replacing the engine: http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/autotrans.html

(The engine runs fine, but the car will not move. VCDS shows the transmission in 5th gear when I shift to drive. The battery was disconnected for about 8 months while I rebuilt the engine.)

The "Basic Settings" tab is gray and cannot be selected, so I'm guessing that I need to enter the security access code to enable it. Problem is, I have no idea where to find the code. VCDS says to look in my Bentley manual, but I'm not sure where to look.

Help please.

All those codes are listed in Ross-Tech Wiki

But I don't see why the car won't drive. You say VCDS shows the transmission in 5th gear when I shift to drive so its an auto?

Yes, it's an auto.

It's not a fault code that I need, it's the security code that allows me to make changes to the transmission's settings. My guess is that I need to reset the computer that controls it, and the link in my first post shows that procedure. I need the security code to do it, I assume.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about: http://ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/securityaccess.html

So you've found some procedure that indicates a security access code is necessary? I'd like to see that procedure. ;)

To the best of my knowledge, that TCU doesn't support Basic Bettings. Since it uses KWP-2000, I guarantee you it doesn't have a Group 000 either in Measuring Blocks or Basic Settings.

My guess is there's something wrong with the controls -- either the gear selector switches, or the selector mechanism/linkage.

I don't think we have ever come across a kick down procedure for the 2004-2005 b5 Passat TDI. If it were a gasser, it would probably use engine basic settings 063 but that doesn't apply to the TDI. It's possible that VW never thought to include such a procedure in the car.

I found another route: people on other forums have said you can merely turn the key to On and floor it for several seconds. It didn't solve my problem, but now I have two codes showing up: p0730 and p0811. I'm afraid this transmission is toast.

I guess it's possible I damaged the front pump in some way when I pulled or, more likely, reinstalled the motor.

Ross-Tech Wiki doesn't have P0811.

VAG Error Code: 17195
EOBD II Error Code: P0811

Fault Location:
Excessive Clutch Slip

Possible Cause:
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.

Wiring/Connector(s).
Clutch Position Sensor harness is open or shorted.
Clutch Position Sensor poor connection.
Mechanical fault.
Engine Control Module (ECM)/Powertrain control module (PCM)/Transmission control module (TCM) (J217).

As taken from my EOBD II Fault Codes software read my intro.
