Audi S5 2010 3.0T internal engine coolant loss

Hi all

Have an Audi S5 2010 3.0T that when pressurized pumps coolant into the engine crankcase. It takes maybe five minutes after topping up the coolant bottle and a pressure tester pumped up to empty it so obviously it's a large leak. So far I have checked the engine oil cooler and it holds it's own. I'm thinking maybe some seal/o ring gave out on the rear engine cover? I know there are water cooled intercoolers in the charger unit but I can't really see how if leaking they would leak into the crankcase instead of some intake ports.

Anyone seen this or atleast have some more knowledge of one of these motors apart?

Any input would be much appreciated

Car is not FOD, just started happening the other week. Do you really want an auto scan?

I don't deny that but have not gotten that far into it. Would like to find the cause of the issue before I start repairing the effects of it.

Got a hold of a friend who works for Audi and he laughed when I asked him. Just so happens they have one at their dealership right now with the same issue. They found out the crankcase breather (that has water running through it...) was cracked. That puppy sits right in the middle of the valley of the block... They had the charger off, pressurized the cooling system and could hear the coolant flowing through it. Will update when I get the charger off.

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for posting the auto-scan.

I can see that the firmware has been indeed updated to 0003.......and that tells me that by the scan.

Basics start with a JPPSG and scan identity is first part for me......

So no DTC's and we are all ready ...so nothing was running hot prior to a pop right or at least that is what I am led to think?

What is happening is the intercoolers combined with a failed PCV system, will cause this behavior & because vacuum will overwhelm the crankcase and suck the coolant right from the intake area where it enters as a "steam form " and then pools in a low PSI area to dump it in the sump.

This is why I am making such a stink here.........

Okay let me see if I can make Uwe & all others which doubt me on this, and further a believer how the scan is indeed related. :rolleyes:

Now after research based on the 3.0 TSB's and the JPPSG , this is an older version car being a 2010 and now with the no coolant related DTC's in memory.

It is my position that the parameters to allow the car to run hotter, with what is considered a malfunctioning thermostat or pump & under these circumstances, is a vicarious casue of the leak of coolant or pump failure in this area.

I'm assuming another failed plastic coolant piece due to material, design, heat, pressure and possibly age of the part and coolant. The vehicle showed no signs of overheating.
