Okay Ross-Tech Forum:
I went home, re-checked everything, re-connected the battery (which had been left disconnected for the better part of the day), and then tried to start the car, which had the same outcome as the previous attempts.
I then went ahead and cleared all codes from all modules. Many of them stayed cleared, but some returned right away (with some of them disconcerting and others seemingly related to functions/features not found in this car). Anyway, most of the codes that returned right away seemed unrelated to the main issue at hand, except the Fault in Module-25 which reports a key problem…
I cycled the ignition, opened/closed the door and then tried to start the car but to no avail. After that, I ran another scan and have pasted the results below. I have also included details from Module-25 showing the registered keys. Key ID-1 is shown as all 0’s. The other two ID slots show non-zero values, but I can’t tell how they match to my keys. I looked at my keys and can’t find any matching numbers – probably don’t know where to look for it and/or what to look for.
Dana – thank you for your feedback. As always your comments are insightful and spot on. It’s pretty amazing you were able to pull the older scan I had previously sent you… I believe the scan I had sent you was related to the fact that I had lost one of two FOB keys I initially got with the car and when I tried to use the second key, I found out it wasn’t the right key for the car (the FOB was not programmed to lock/unlock the car, and the key itself was not cut for my ignition cylinder). Anyway, the dealer took back the “wrong” key FOB and ordered me a “proper” replacement which they coded to the car.
I have been using that key ever since without a problem – and still have not found the original key, which I am positive my kids put somewhere “safe”.
The replacement key FAB and the original non-FOB Service key have worked without a glitch all this time, and now they both stopped working…
As you suggested, I also double-checked things around the ignition cylinder. I did not find a coil around the tumbler, which is what I remember having seen on my previous MY2011 Golf 2.5. Instead, I found this plug-in module that appears to have an internal coil and a beveled prong that might touch the key when in ignition??? I removed and re-installed it (to make sure it was snug and connection properly seated). I also took pics of it, but am not sure if I can post pics on this forum, so I’ll just mention the model number is “1K0 953 527 D”
I also have pics of my keys, but for now I’ll just try to indicate the various markings on each.
