Hi I have a problem with an A3 that belongs to a motor trade customer, The previous history is unknown and it was bought at auction with this
fault.
The car starts and runs every time although it cranks a little longer than i think is normal. It has a rev limit when stationary and produces no fault codes
untill driven. At which point it drops in to limited performance mode and logs faults for fuel pressure.
The fuel pressure is to low, when over 2500rpm under load the actual and desired pressures are way off.
I have so far tried the following.
Replaced fuel filter, Checked for any sign of air in fuel. Confirmed that there is plenty of good fuel in the tank.
Checked that both low pressure pumps are running, Then tested the low fuel pessure and found it to be 4 bar at all times, when driving and
under load low pressure is still 4 bar. My info says 3.8 so i'm fairly confident the low pressure system is ok.
I'v also done an injector back leakage test in the workshop and also driving when the fault happens using a pressure transducer and scope.
The injector back leakege does not suddenly increase when fault happens.
I have looked at duty cycle and current with a scope of both the inlet metering valve and the desiel regulating valve. but i dont have good data to compair with.
The fuel system is I believe EDC17 with a cp4.1 single piston pump. I have read that they are becoming common failures and that swarf can sometimes be found in the pump under the inlet metring valve. which i'v removed but found it to be clean.
There are a very large amount of data blocks in vcds and i wonder if any one has any advice on which ones if any may help.
I have alldata euro access to the workshop manuel which i'm not so sure is as good as erwin.
Any advice as to where to go next would be much appreciated
The trade customer is however as tight as a drum and is all ready talking about punting it back through the auction if i think its the pump.
