Why my outdoor outlets are controlled by a WiFi connected fused spur/timer - so I turn them on/off only when I need to use them

These automatic electronic or WiFi devices are not all they are cracked up to be.

    For example programmable thermostats.
I found that keeping the home at a stable temp.
This saved much more money on air conditioning many years ago, versus allowing it to ramp temps up and down.
Recently adding Capacitor banks to high load components also made huge demand savings & helped stabilize voltages for shop to be more consistent.

But at least it means I can turn the outlet off even if I'm not at home

    Update on my 2018 A3 e-tron:

The current tank of gas (filled up in March) has gotten me 10% of the total vehicle miles and still shows Full. I guesstimate I used about 1/2 gallon of gas so figure 2400 mpg? The display limits out at 300.

    Nice!

the lifetime mpg on my volt @~95000 miles is like 75mpg. I think it was ~77 when I bought it at 40k.

but my commute is ~50 miles round trip, which on the volts 30-48 electric range almost always has me using 0 to .5 gal a day.

if only I lived/worked another 10 miles closer or had a consistent 50+ range, I'd be 99% electric outside of any trips.

My average (not taking into account the current tank since I haven't filled up yet) is 76.6mpg, quite close to yours!

I definitely see the value in a Volt-sized EV range for a PHEV. You need to pay more for batteries and carry them around all the time but assuming one is willing to treat cars as periodically disposable items (as most consumers do) then PHEV can make a bunch of sense. I'm still not ready for a full EV since the infrastructure just isn't there. When the lease is up on this A3 e-tron (in June, 2021), I'd consider another PHEV or just a plain old ICE. Long before PHEVs were a thing, I intentionally bought a house close to work (4 miles door to door). 5 mile radius was ideal, 10 mile radius would have been acceptable.
