It's just supply & demand in operation.

The oil producers can't agree who should cut back production despite the demand for oil dropping hugely due to Covid-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions - hence the oil price crashes and gasoline price drops to 1980's levels. No subsidy needed.

Lovely theory, when then are these billion (trillion) $ companies not out of biz if supply and demand is the key? Some reading if you dare :)

(there's tons more if you want to be depressed)

This stuff doesn't even account for current administration helping our poor beleaguered (ha ha ha) fossil fuel companies due to pandemic lower-driving situation.

Tesla’s Shift To Cobalt-Free Batteries Is Its Most Important Move Yet
A couple of months ago, it was revealed that Tesla was working with CATL on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, and these could be the real gamechanger. LFP batteries don’t use cobalt ...
LFP batteries also have much lower (less than half!) the energy density.

Tesla will be using LFP for the batteries in its Chinese Model 3, after receiving government approval to do so. It is estimated that using LFP batteries will allow a 15-20% reduction in manufacturing cost.
And how much of a reduction in range due to the decreased energy density?

The good news for you, Jack, is that LFP batteries have a much lower tendency to go prompt-critical when damaged or abused.

I like this spec, Carmine Red with the 19" base wheels looks great, IMHO. Granted this is still a VERY expensive car, with tantalizing options making it easily an EXTREMELY expensive car, but it's nice to see range and efficiency in the Tesla ballpark from another manufacturer.

This was painful to watch:

Imagine the reaction from the wife and kids while you pull into a walmart in the middle of the night with range on 0% and air leaking out of your tire with no spare ... and the walmart is closed. Even with a Tesla I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a long road trip with my family with current ranges and infrastructure. That ain't no vacation.

True enough; sadly the networks not Tesla are sometimes pathetic

Tesla on the other hand is good and getting better. I know it's not a well shared feeling here :) but I've done significant road trips in my Model 3 and it's been great.

Here's a tl;dw for the even longer second part of the story, EV Cannonball record attempt:

44 hours, 25 minutes, and 59 seconds....
So they averaged a bit less than 65 mph (including their charging stops).
I am not impressed.
FWIW, Google maps says it should only take 41 hours. :D

A pair of cringe-worthy videos proving how bad an idea EVs are:

The entire purpose of a car is to have the sort of freedom you don't have when relying on public transportation. It makes me thankful for the 5 minutes I spend every couple weeks at a gas pump, cleaning my rear window while dinosaur remains flow into my fuel tank.

Quoting myself just shy of 4 years later to say I drank the kool-aid:

I still have 2 gassers in the garage so not like this is a necessary vehicle for road trips.
