'09 Touareg 3.0 TDI sudden limp mode, man code. Help please.

Hi everyone, I'm currently verified but for some reason unable to post in the Car Repair forum. I was hoping to get some help ASAP before I pull my hair out and end up taking this beast into the Stealership.


Some context, I was driving to work last week....my Touareg started fine, drove fine, etc until about 5 mins into my drive it just lost all power and got a flashing check engine and a flashing glow plug light and it said "Workshop Fault"

I limped it home and scanned it, but I only scanned the 01 Engine module and came up with these codes...

I was reasonably certain it was the pressure sensor on the AdBlue pump that died so I replaced that but it did not solve the problem. After clearing all the codes in the engine module and they came back, I decided to do an AutoScan and this is the result.

So I think there is something SERIOUSLY wrong here and has to do with the electrical system. Electrical gremlins are not my area of expertise so I was hoping someone on here with more knowledge and experience could help me out. I'm really hoping to get to the bottom of this myself so I don't have to take it to the dealership and have them bend me over the counter...

I've never seen this many "Malfunction" codes on modules before. Could this be an indication of a wiring issue or perhaps the ECU dying? or a problem with the CAN system?

So iet's have a look what the G686 Pressure sender for reducing agent metering system and the reference voltage have in common. Absolutely nothing :(

First DTC
G686 itself could be broken. I have no idea where to find it, probably on the AdBlue system, somewhere.
The wiring could be broken (check the wires from ECU to the sensor, T94/11 T94/17 and T60/38 to the sensor). Verify all wires end to end with a multimeter.

Second DTC
Reference voltage B is something thats calculated inside the ECU itself. From what I can read, it's not dependent on any wiring.
A fault inside the ECU would be the first suspect, but fuses are easier to check:
S9
S15

Also verify the earth points and wiring (on bulkhead, Earth Point 1). Maybe they are corroded or dirty.

Hello OP and welcome to the VCDS forum.

I have bad news ...........been here a few times.

You will need to immediately test the reductant circuit & MAP sensor using WD. Please verify the harness is not damaged first or contaminated with urea or oil causing a bridge that damages the control module or from a shared track.

When this happens it can cause the limp mode by damaging the EPC circuit within the controller as a result.

It is possible the sensors are faulty and shorted causing this damage too or the FOD part #!

Fuse installed inline added to the reductant & MAP sensor for each track will stop this from a future catastrophe.

The G686 is located right on the AdBlue pump. I bought a new pump and swapped it, but the issue was not solved.......so I'm learning toward a wiring or controller fault. There was no warning or intermittent issues, this happened out of nowhere which seemed very strange to me.

Unfortunately I don't have access to any wiring diagrams, so it's difficult for me to actually track this down myself. There is VERY little information on Touaregs floating around out there, do you by chance have a wiring diagram I could follow?

I'll have a look at the fuses you mentioned when I get home from work this evening. Also going to try and check the grounds and battery cables.


The first night I found these faults I went through an output test on the engine module and everything seemed to be functioning properly. After I went through all of this and cleared the codes on 01-Engine, none of them came back while the vehicle was starting and running for 5 minutes and then all of the sudden the check engine lights started flashing again and I got the same 2 codes for p204a and p0651. Since then I haven't been able to make the codes go away again following my same steps.

I don't have any wiring diagrams to go from unfortunately, so it's difficult for me to test the harness :(

Have you seen this exact issue? Or a similar one?

I have ever seen so many "Malfunction 0010" codes in a scan before and I've owned VWs and Audis for 12 years now.

Well my notes indicate you can also have an issue with the shared turbo charger module tracks on J724

My money was on the Z102 which is the heater in that POS causing a back feed to the J623 from the sensor doing an internal short.

Yeah when it comes to WD, I do have acces to them via the official VW ElsaWIN program. Sharing them publicly is a bit of a grey area. They are probably copyrighted but there is such a thing as fair use as well.

I can understand it's a bit of a grey area, I wasn't sure what the policy was so I thought I'd ask. There is so little information available on forums and google for the Touareg I was hoping I would be able to get something to help.

Well my notes indicate you can also have an issue with the shared turbo charger module tracks on J724

This MIGHT actually be the case Jack. So when I run through the output tests on the 01-Engine module, the only output that doesn't seem to respond is the turbocharger control actuator (can't recall the actual name for it in VCDS). So how would one go about checking this? I know when I pulled the engine cover off the engine last week I had some oil residue on the turbocharger and I noticed some soot on the turbocharger from a small exhaust leak I've been delaying fixing. Do you think this could be what's shorting things out and causing the issues??

Also I felt I should mention that the very first time that I ran the output test after my limp-mode issues, the actuator worked. Now when I run it, nothing happens and it seems stuck in the wrong orientation because when I start the vehicle and it idles, it sounds different than it always has.

MmmBoost: If I can add to Jack's excellent suggestion - here's a couple of other ways of finding stuff assuming that you use Adobe reader:

In the first screen, select the "magnifying glass" shown in the circle and the find dialogue box opens. Enter the search criteria (i.e. "turbo" in the pic.) and then repeatedly press "next" to go to each hit

The facility in the first screen finds individual hits, whereas the second screen is a more detailed search facility that yields a table of all hits in the document

Both ways are very good, but I use the first method if the search criteria has only a few hits -otherwise, it gets very tiresome going to the next hit. But the choice is yours!!

In addition, if you want to know what's connected to your ECU, search for i.e. J623 (codename for the ECU) or T96 and T60 (the plugs that go into the ECU).
I'm usually making lists and illustrated images of what goes where on a connector, this way short circuits or FOD are easier to visualize.

Well I've made a little progress so far. I've been following the diagnostic procedures for the G686 Reductant Pressure Sensor as well as the J724 Turbocharger Control Module. So far both tests failed the initial voltage tests looking for 5V with the key on. For G686 it was pin 1 to 3 looking for 5V and for J724 it was pins 3 to 5 looking for 5 volts. Both gave me readouts of about 0.64V .... the next step in both procedures is to check the wiring harness to the ECM.......however the friggin connector on the ECM is bolted on with anti-tamper bolts. I haven't got around to tackling this just yet, but it's kind of looking like my ECM has crapped the bed.

Jack, you mentioned that the heater circuit might be backfeeding into the pressure sensor circuit. Do you think if I unplugged the heater control module I would see any different results?


If my ECM is infact dead, what is the procedure for replacing it? I'm concerned about the immobilizer coding..

Yeah, you could unplug the heater to isolate it for testing......... plus simulate with variable resistor while observing VCDS advance block values.

If the ECU is indeed screwed........ let me know........ I can help with a data transfer to another used unit you supply or sell you one with a data transfer from yours.

If so please us the contract form and ref the thread so the office knows because RT forum referrals get a discount.

We have the units .........

That ecu is over 2K at the dealer + programming but I am sure I can hook you up if need be.

It is important to test all the tracks and sensors, so get to it on the tamper proofs.

We want to know what has ran interference with the ECU before plugging in a new or replacement unit.

Do you still have the old sensor for testing to compare with a DVOM or lite off the heater manually while measuring values?

Do not be afraid to run fuses to protect stuff if you are unsure of your abilities going forward.

I see that the pins 3 and 5 going into the Turbocharger Control Module (G581/J724/V280) come from Tracks 110 and 137 respectively. 110 is shared with G450 the exhaust pressure sensor and 137 is shared with the G686 Reductant Pressure Sensor. This is the exact sensor I'm having issues with. The 137/215 tracks are both coming from "D195 Connection 5V (in engine compartment wiring harness) 1" ........so it's looking like this may be where the problem lies since I'm also getting an a P651 code "Sensor Reference Voltage B" which from what I've read on other forums is a code that pops up when there is an issue with a 5V reference wire/circuit. Sounding pretty reasonable?

What's the likelihood that this wire is shorting out or broken somewhere and it hasn't actually screwed up my ECM?


Time gap. Before hitting send I did all the diagnostics on the 2 sensor issues in the repair manual.


Ok...... here are the results of testing after finally getting the anti-tamper bolts off. What a nightmare those were. I broke 2 screwdrivers trying to get them out after dremeling a groove into them..

G686
Pin 1 to 3: .6-.8V (nowhere near the 5V it's supposed to be)
Pin 1 to T94aa/17: 0.4 Ω (within the 0.5 ± 0.3 Ω spec)
Pin 2 to T94aa/11: 0.4 Ω (within the 0.5 ± 0.3 Ω spec)
Pin 3 to T60/38: 0.3 Ω (I assume within the 0.5 ± 0.3 Ω spec)



J724
Pin 3 to 5: 0.6-1.0V (nowhere near the 5V it's supposed to be)
Pin 3 to T94aa/79: 0.4 Ω (within the 0.5 ± 0.3 Ω spec)
Pin 5 to T94aa/17: 0.4 Ω (within the 0.5 ± 0.3 Ω spec)



So..... It's kind of not looking for for the ECM at this point.

Well I've already thrown a bunch of money at this with the Adblue pump which I thought had failed. I never imagined that my ECM would just up and die out of nowhere........so I definitely want to be correct about my diagnosis. How would "the common man" go about ensuring the ECM is dead?

What do you mean by "unplug the track"? As in remove the pins from the harness connector? Or is this something that I can do if I open up the ECM?

I tried to get the ECM opened up to have a look inside and see if there was anything obviously wrong, but it has some sort of weather-sealing adhesive on it. Not sure if there's anything I'd be able to see or do in there anyway so I didn't want to force it open and break the seal.
