2007 Passat 1.9 TDI won't go up a hill only wiithout Limp Mode

Hi Guys/gals.

I have a friend who lives local with this problem with her 2007 Passat 1.9 TDI-PD BXE.

It only goes up a hill the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) comes on. If the car stops and the turn the ignition off. Start up everything is ok.
On level ground or down bank the car performs normally is only when it goes up an hill/bank/incline.

She has had it in garages for this problem. A new MAF sensor fitted, the turbo removed and cleaned.

I said pop down for a scan and check.

its the 000564 - Boost Pressure Regulation P0234 rather than the other 2 faults

I know Limp Mode can be bad vacuum pipes/connections, I had a look around and they look good.

Limp mode: What is it, what are the causes, and how to fix it for the Audi and VW TDI diesel turbo

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16618/P0234/000564

Check Charge Pressure Control System
Perform Output Test (to check the Turbo Charger)
Perform Basic Setting (to check the Charge Pressure Control)

How do you Perform Basic Setting (to check the Charge Pressure Control)?

I checked the MAF sensor in MVB 011 and it appears to be working ok.

I saved the MAF sensor CSV file but you can't add any files to this forum.

Any suggestion of things to check? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response.

I've changed the title slightly to hill only. Driving the car on level ground or down bank no problem its only when you go up a bank. She turns the car off, starts it back up and the MIL clears and it ok until she find another bank.

I thought is there something in the fuel tank floating about and it blocks the pickup pipe when you go up a bank.

I said I checked MVB 011 and showed the VC-Scope and saved the CSV file. When I clicked on Log I couldn't save the MAF values shown to a text file it just flicked over to the VC-Scope.

o9j1g0.jpg

I'm sure I've mentioned this before. Have you have done an AutoScan and saved the file there is a popup that always shows you can click to open the log folder which I know where it is. When you close the popup is ALWAYS asks are you sure you want to close this. Its as though if you close it you loose the saved file. I've always found that very annoying.

Any one else found that?

Keith........

Here's the scope.....The boost is in a positive deviation under load request and exceeding the boost target by 150-200MBAR then causing limp mode enacted since out of the diagnostic stacks adaptive target range/threshold.

The WG or VNT is stuck on within the turbo more than likely from carbon but the WG could also be set wrong or in mechanical failure.

It is also possible in some cases the intake or EGR could be so restricted that it pings the MAP sensor into thinking a positive deviation is present.

Please investigate it.......

I posted this problem on my other forum. A reply came back saying it can be a bad camshaft.

http://www.myturbodiesel.com/threads...mp-mode.31155/

A bad camshaft will effect performance all through the rev range not just Limp Mode on banks.

Sure a PD could have a faulty cam or lifters also causing this especially if FOD programmed.......... so that would be correct but usually you would get some popping from incomplete combustion and misfires......

Yes I know about the bad camshafts, this engine is quiet. What the AutoScan doesn't show is its done 140,000 miles. As I've said:

A bad camshaft will effect performance all through the rev range not just Limp Mode on banks. They rattle when the valve lifter bucket breaks up.

I spoke to the owner tonight did she get my email with the log file. She said yes but the car is now fixed.

How is it fixed I asked. She took it to a taxi company and told them of her problem. They said that's normal for a TDI.

They went out for a test drive and it went into Limp Mode on a level road. That's just a woman's diagnostic procedure hill only. They came back and plugged in their diagnostic scanner and it showed at problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve. They removed it and it was blocked with crap. They cleaned it and put it back and on the test drive it didn't go into Limp Mode.

I asked did she notice the scanner they used make/model/colour no she didn't. Being a taxi company with different makes and models it would have been a good generic one.

There are 132 codes for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) why didn't VCDS pick up on this in the scan?

This question is poorly phased. It should be, "Why didn't this car's ECU set an EGR code?"

Ok why didn't VCDS read the ECU set and EGR code?

Because VCDS only reports what an ECU disseminates after requests are made & responses are sent as a conduit through the interface to the program.

ECU could be FOD..........

A scan tool can only tell you what the car knows. VCDS did query the ECU, but there was no EGR code present in the ECU at that time you ran the scan in the first post.

Yes I understand that. If there was a problem with the EGR surely the ECU would log it. If it re-occurs it would permanently log it.
