Hello,

I've posted this call for help on the ClubTouareg forum, but figured that I would get some helpful input from here as well.

Looking for some assistance and advice regarding a non-starting and brain dead 2004 V10 (I've already read every existing thread on ClubTouareg and several on here related to this issue from start to finish).

The symptoms began as intermittent non-starting: with key on only some of the dash would come to life (not all of the gauges would work), and turning the key to starting position would result in nothing happening. Sometimes the key would not be released from ignition and shifter could not be moved into neutral. Time and/or several tries later and eventually it would start.

Currently with the key on, only some of the dash comes to life: the screen comes up, but does not show all of the typical pre-start icons (like glow plugs), and non of the gauges come on. Turning the key to start does nothing. The shift lever is usable and the key can be removed.

There must have been a constant parasitic draw on the batteries because eventually they went dead. Both batteries are less than 1 year old (sized properly according to threads on here) and have been removed from the vehicle and load tested as good. They have been re-charged and re-installed.

I have attached a vagcom scan (done prior to steps taken below). This is my first time using one so I could use help interpreting it. The main issue appears to be that there is no communication with the ECM at all. I understand that many/most of the dtc's are probably related to the dead battery. But, due to the lack of communication with the ECM, I do not know how to clear all of them in order to run a new scan. Help?

What has been tried so far:
1) All fuses checked (drivers side, passenger side, and in engine bay).
2) Wiring harness under driver's floor board carpet checked. No visible sign of corrosion, but all splices were re-spliced.
3) Batteries load tested, re-charged, and re-installed.
4) Clean dirt and debris away from wiper area.
5) Removed and inspected ECM's- no visible sign of water or damage on plugs (did not open cases). Cleaned electrical plugs on both.
5) Checked starting requirements to start - found bad brake light switch and replaced.
6) Checked door handles- passenger door black button does not work. Plan on disconnecting wire harness to all door handles if necessary, but not done yet.
7) Kessy removed and repaired. The two MOSFETs were replaced (they appeared to be stuck open, but not burned up). The resistors all checked OK.

Re-installed the repaired Kessy, the new brake light switch, and the re-charged batteries. No change in status- still brain dead and vagcom says no communication with ECM.

Now the stock alarm system is acting up. While working on the car with the driver's door open and the key sitting on the seat the alarm has been arming itself and locking the doors. This is the first time it has ever done this.

Any input to help me get this beast running would be greatly appreciated!

Yes welcome....
I seriously request you remove the master ecu and see if the slave wakes up.
Please verify the internals of the ECU's in addition to ecu supply relays and load reduction relays + ignition switch.
Verify terminals 15 & 30 & ground 31 @ controllers directly and K lines using WD in RTFB.

0x17 & 0x19 for cluster and gateway are also offline so these must be checked first as a combination unit.

Jack- thank you for the help!

I've got a question about the ECU's- I was under the impression that the horizontally mounted one was the master and the vertically mounted one was the slave. However there is a hand written note in sharpie on the horizontally mounted one that says "slave". Can you please help me confirm which one is supposed to be the master?

You indicate to check the supply and load reduction relay. Are there instructions somewhere for how to test a relay?

All in the RTFB but you could unplug one ecu at a time and query each ECU in VCDS until you rule it out.

Have you checked the relay under the driver's seat for copper showing thru the sight glass?
Also, Bentley has dire warnings about electrical system damage on 2004's if proper seguence of batt connection is not followed. They say front batt must be first disconnected and last reconnected.

I'm in need of some brain power from the fantastic collective that is this forum.....

The current diagnosis is that the two ECM's are not being powered/activated at all. Based on this, the thought is that the ignition and/or the kessy is bad.

The kessy has been "repaired" by replacing the bad mosfets, however that should only fix the door handle portion of the kessy - if there is a more serious problem with it related to start/activation/immobilization then it would most likely need to be replaced.

Due to these items being tied to the key programming, any of this work will now have to be done by a dealer. The dealer claiming that if they replace both of those they would need to replace the cluster, both pcms, door locks etc.

Am I correct that there is a way around the requirement of having to replace the door locks. They could simply be unplugged behind the door panel (deactivating the touch/unlock function), correct? As long as the key fob could still be used to lock/unlock the car, I am fine with that.

Are they correct that both PCMs would have to be replaced (I am assuming these are what I've been referring to as ECM's). Is there some work around for that?

How about the cluster? Any work around for that?

Nope what they state is BS and yeah there is indeed work around.

Immo defeat of ECU set Master/Slave for one.

Data transfer of kessy existing to new or used unit supplied or one purchased.

What is condition of ECU fuses and ecu supply relay terminal 15 and 30 & at the ecu's directly?

but all splices were re-spliced
WHY?

Jack- I always seem to have a hard time deciphering your responses!

I do not understand this one at all. I'm not familiar enough to know what "immo defeat" is or means nor the master/slave part. Could you explain/clarify what I need to know regarding this in order to have a semi-intelligent conversation with the dealer about it?

Data transfer of kessy existing to new or used unit supplied or one purchased.
I will find out if the dealer is capable and willing to do this.

All of the fuses in the dirver's, passenger's, and engine bay firewall driver's side were OK. Are there other specific ECU fuses that need to be checked? If so, where are they located? Let me find out regarding the supply terminals.

Master ( Main engine ecu 0x01 )
Slave ( Second engine ecu 0x11 )

Immo defeat will not be offered at a "dealer", nor "data transfer", so no point in that conversation with them.
Immobilzer defeat is when we program the ECU set to ignore the high security key crap and Kessy and just run.

The Repair manual ( RTFB ) and using wire diagram ( WD ) to identify power sources/terminal identifiers or grounds.

Sorry don't mean to be cryptic.

If those options are unavailable at a dealer, and my current independent shop is incapable, then what options remain? do you know of any shops in either Boise, Salt Lake City, or possibly Vegas that you would recommend?
