Several weeks ago my son's A6 started throwing the code listed in the title of this message along with a Camshaft Position Sensor Code. The vehicle also started running extremely rough especially when accelerating from idle. Once the vehicle reaches an RPM over 3,000 rpm the engine smooths out, but top speed seems to be limited by the ECU. Also, the EPC Light came on along with the Traction Control Icon.

Knowing about issues with coil packs I decided to replace the COIL Packs and install new Spark Plugs. When I started this work my son and I found a considerable amount of oil in the spark plug wells, because the Valve Covers were leaking. I ordered new Valve Cover Gaskets

The vehicle was worked on in the Spring by a local Audi dealership for a Check Engine Light. The dealer service rep knew I was strapped for cash, so he tried to save me a little and didn't add the new gaskets. The dealership found dirt clogging the Cam Adjuster Valve on Bank 2 which they cleaned out, reported no sludge build up in the Cylinder Heads, and no fault with the Timing Chain.

After replacing the Valve Cover Gaskets on both Cylinder Heads, Spark Plugs, Coil Packs, and the Camshaft Position Sensor at position G163, I obtained a new set of DTCs and the Misfire in Cylinder 4 remained.

The Partial First Engine Scan for only the Engine Address 01 was run before the vehicle was serviced by the Audi Dealer. The Second Scan was done after the dealer service and before any of the mentioned repairs were performed, the Partial Third Scan for only the Engine Address 01 was the first scan after completing my repairs today and the Forth Scan was what remained after several engine starts and the clearing of previous DTCs before I called it quits for the day.

I am at a loss, and need some advice about how to proceed from here.

Dear Jack,

First – It may have been sludge or it may have been something else that the dealer technician found...I did not see the screen that was blocked myself, but it was cleared.

Second – The scans represent different times over a several month period, and what appears to me to be two separate issues.

Third – The Camshaft Position Sensor issues that first appeared in the earlier scans, is no longer present, since the sensor has been replaced.

Fourth – I have inspected what was visible of the Valve-Train, the interior passages of the Valve Covers, the oil passages and cavities of the Cylinder Head and found no reductions in diameter or evidence of sludge.

Fifth – All of the new DTCs represented in the last scan appear to be electrical in nature.

Sixth – I tried to provide a sequence of scans, service and repairs very similar to what you describe on the page that you linked, but that process seems to have directed you to the wrong conclusion. Your observation relates more to the pre-dealer service issue than to the current issue. And, relative to that, having worked on a 2000 A6 2.8L Quattro Avant which hadn't had an oil change in several years, prior to my work on the current vehicle, I didn't find any Sludge in the 2000 A6 vehicle either, even after tearing down the Oil Pan, inspecting the Oil Take-up Pipe, the Oil Pump and the Valve-Train, removing the Chain Tensioner and draining the oil from the Tensioner. The oil in the Chain Tensioner on the 2008 vehicle was clean, but the screens were loose, because the method of attaching them is faulty and will not last as long as the tensioners.

The fact is that the issue with the 2000 A6 2.8L Quattro Avant was electrical, a bad Camshaft Position Sensor, but I was thrown off to Oil Distribution as the problem by the initial Dashboard Warning Light, the very large OIL CAN Icon .

So, If you have a relevant suggestion, I would be grateful if you could share it with me instead of smuggly sending me to your linked page. I have had enough aggravation over this particular vehicle and have no patience for unresponsive replies, which is similar to the way you treat people who stop in at your shop on 17K.

Actually your scans have no dates nor did your data indicate that this was an event leading up to as you have defined in your 1-6 steps until after the JPPSG & you editing your post that I recalled while I was writing a response in the buffer.

So the..........ah, what you consider smug response to the JPPSG....... has actually added such clarity which was needed & maybe I was tired last night or misread your post just looking at the scan data half asleep.

I am located in the Hudson Valley too, so I understand why you would assume such an attitude........maybe it's just geographic! :p

You are the one who indicated an FOD in the adjuster and described it as dirt not me and unless the kids were dumping stuff down the oil fill I believe I answered correctly out of concern for the sump and DTC's exhibited.

The over advanced code is usually a dead giveaway of a serious underlined condition for timing or in the sump for contaminated oil or floaters & which take time to plug the oil pump screen, while further running as engine operation time continues as you described.

If oil sludge or FOD have made its way past the oil pump pickup screen and then past the oil filter & to the tiny micron screen at adjuster, that's a problem even though it may not appear contaminated in the head, VC area!
It also is what usually causes or contributes a solenoid to go open from the ECU constantly trying to compensate for an out of sync cam.

Why are you mixing years of different vehicle's in this post to rationalize, it only causes confusion and they are entirely different engine's!

If all you have now is a bad adjuster or wiring to it than get the WD and trace the tracks while further testing the solenoid of the adjuster but don't discredit the FOD warnings because of what happened in a 2000 A6

More than likely reported that way to not have to offer goodwill for free since it is fact a problem as are chains + adjusters due to sludge in this car.

As for the micron screens I remove them because I find they do more harm than good at the adjuster.

As for what happens in a 2000 A6 shouldn't be your basis for how you deal with a 2008 3.2 & entirely different engine with chains.

I'm sorry you feel I was being smug or abrasive............it wasn't my intent, however, I think your thought process for diagnosis did suck......... still does and you should change it. :rolleyes:

Hi Vincent,

Maybe you have more than one issue causing your problems.

Have you carried out a compression test? It is a little strange that you only have a misfire on cylinder 4 if the problem is cam timing related. Does it sound like the engine is only running on 5 cylinders at all times from start up? May be worth checking the misfire counters in MVBs after a DTC clear.

I would run a function test on the cam adjustment valves using the output tests function in VCDS, but try this with the engine both hot and cold. You should be able to hear the valves clicking on and off. If a problem is found you may be able to verify it by checking the resistance of the valve's solenoid, but be aware that the problem may be intermittent so you may not see it with a multimeter!

I would also suggest making sure your battery is fully charged - it won't cause cam timing problems but will cause other problems elsewhere.

Dear Jack,

Thank you for detailed response!

I was doing some further testing this morning and the codes were changing. After a test drive I decided to look at the Sensor and Valve in question from the Codes.

What I found was the following: The Exhaust Cam Adjustment Valve 2 (N319) at first glance looked normal. Just incase the cleaning fluids I used cause current to short in the connector, I blew it out with compressed air. Upon doing so the red/purple Locking Bar of the Locking Connector 8K0 973 702 D for the Exhaust Cam Adjustment Valve 2 (N319) blew out. I looked with a magnifying glass, and found that the interior portion of the connector had split at the point where the Locking Bar secures the contacts in the connector.

Therefore, upon replacing the connector after the Valve Cover Gasket replacement, the contacts were just pushed up as the connector was pushed down. Upon further examination I found the interior portion of the connector that actually holds the contacts in the proper orientation and locks them in after the Locking Bar is inserted, lodged on the valve connector. I retrieved it and am now trying to make a temporary repair until I can order a new Locking Connector 8K0 973 702 D.

If the temporary epoxy compound repair to the internal portion of the connector works, I I will be able to properly orient the contacts and place the connector on the Exhaust Cam Adjustment Valve 2 (N319) until the replacement arrives.

Finally, I don't believe my diagnostic procedures and processes are nearly as flawed as you think. And, I understand that the two engines are different, but if the "abused engine showed no sludge then an engine that had been maintained properly should by inference at the very least be in better condition than the abused engine.

I do like your idea about removing those troublesome screens, since as you, I feel they have the potential to do more harm. However, I would not remove them without some corroborating opinion which I now have.

Sorry for being so irritable, but a friend is having an 80th Birthday celebration today and my son is in NYC with our only other car.

Yes, Jack, I did hear that and will do the test. But, please be aware that when you respond to questions, there are people like me who work on their cars when something goes wrong [and have for over fifty years], but don't work on Audi and VWs every day. I don't have the hours to devote to the practice of Audi repair that you have devoted to the task.

I have been told by a mutual acquaintance in the Town of Wallkill that you are a top notch Audi expert and very capable. I respect your knowledge and skills, but don't like being treated with disdain or apparent disdain for trying to learn more about repairing my vehicle. If I could afford your prices, at 72, I'd much prefer to have the work done by an expert and not be out on a dirt driveway with no lift and half the tools that I need to do the job.

So, please consider the questions from the perspective of others. Fortunately, a friend lent me his car today and I was honored to attend my friend's 80th birthday celebration, and the stress of getting the A6 back on the road has been somewhat relieved.

Hi Jack,

I have downloaded the VIN specific electronic manual from erWi.Audi.com.

The Spark Plugs and Coil Packs are new.

The Valve Cover Gasket is new and there are no leaks at the Cover Bolts or around the COVER.

I'm waiting for the Locking Connector 8K0 973 702 D for the Exhaust Cam Adjustment Valve 2 (N319) to be delivered. It was broken and not seating properly.

I have not checked the injector at that location yet. I don't currently have the tools for working on the injectors. But, that was on my list.

Let me add some historical information here: After the vehicle was repaired at the Audi dealership, it was running fine. Some time after that my son filled up the fuel tank with economy grade gasoline by mistake, and shortly after that the error codes started appearing with the very rough idle and the misfiring in Cylinder 4. It may have been simple coincidence that the trouble started after the refueling with cheap gas. I just thought I should mention this.

I'm ordering the tools for the compression and leak down test, so I have not done that yet.

I have not checked for false air leak at this location. If I understand this question correctly, are you speaking of an air leak at the injector?

And, regarding the intake valves and valve ports, I'll need to order replacement gaskets and "o" rings to reseal everything after checking them.

No but air anywhere between MAF and combustion chamber.

You should try enhancing the grounds and power to the #4 coil.

Engine mount also shares a power bus with the N319.............N144 which you also had a legacy DTC for.........isolate it and try swapping the N319 with N208 next to it and see if the DTC moves.
