I'm posting this here for a specific problem I'm having with a 2007 VW Passat 2.5L 5-Cyl. engine conversion ... a brake light switch fault. I've had this fault from the beginning of this project and can't seem to get rid of it. (The ABS errors in the scan below are recent ... I had the Brake light fault long before the current ABS issues occurred).

Today I cleared the fault for the umteenth time ... then I drove the car.

Everything works fine ... for a while. The brake lights work ... the green foot peddle light on the dash goes off when the Brake peddle is depressed ... the cruise control turns on and "sets" fine on the freeway ... and depressing the brake peddle deactivates the cruise control fine.

But today, after I had cleared the code, I drove with my VCDS open to Address 01: Engine (CBT) ... Fault Codes - 02 ... and watched for the Brake light switch fault to show up (don't know if VCDS faults show up in real-time). It took about 5 minutes of driving to get the fault to appear ... during that time I set the cruise ... applied the brakes ... used the turn signals ... turned on the headlights.

I was trying to find anything that might set the fault ... but really found nothing ... other than simply pressing the brake peddle ... eventually.

Any ideas as to why the switch would be fine for a while ... but throw a fault after about 5 minutes?

Here's today's scan ...

Something just occurred to me as I was watching YouTube videos on tail light bulb replacement for both 2005> Jetta ... and 2006 - 2010 Passat. The Jetta uses standard Incandescent bulbs ... the Passat doesn't use bulbs, they use LED tail lights / turn signals.

I also found this ...

VAG Error Code: 16955/001393/0003/2644

EOBD II Error Code: P0571

Fault Location:
Brake Light Switch (F) - Circuit Malfunction/Implausible Signal

Possible Cause:
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)(K83) active.
- Glow Plug Indicator Light (K29) active.
- Brake Light(s) not working.

- Fuse(s).
- Wiring/Connector(s).
- Wrong Brake Light Bulb installed (21W instead of 5/21W).
- Brake Light Bulb(s) faulty.
- Brake Light Switch (F) faulty.
- Misadjusted brake switch.

(As taken from my Free EOBD II Error Codes software)

Could this be my problem? ... the Jetta ECU is looking for Jetta tail light bulbs ... instead it sees Passat LED's?

I don't think ECUs don't look for tail-light bulbs. That's a BCM/CECM/CCM's job.

Uwe, the reason I said that was because of this statement (I hadn't posted the entire page from "Free EOBD II Error Codes software") ...

Description:
"When the brake pedal is depressed, the brake light switch sends a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM). When the Engine Control Module (ECM) receives this signal, it cancels the cruise control."

Also, in the Jetta wiring diagrams, there are two wires from the ECU that are connected to the Brake Peddle Switch (F47) ... T121/55 (White/Green) and T121/56 (Black/Red). The 2007 Passat only has the Black/Red wire connected to the Brake Light Switch ... I had to add the White/Green wire from the Jetta ECU to the Brake Peddle Switch F47.

Apparently, the ECU connections are required for the cruise control ... which makes sense. My brake lights continue to work fine even after the Brake fault is set ... the cruise control does not.

there are jettas with led brake lights, so you'll have to look elsewhere for fault
in jettas brake sensor is on the brake pedal while in passat it's incorporated in abs if my memory serves me right, so did you try to check brake sensor? this sensor can cause cruise not to work

m87a, I'm specifically referring to the year Jetta that the ECU is from ... a 2008 2.5L. And I don't believe that year had LED brake lights (at least not in the US).

The Jetta, through late 2005, uses a mechanical brake light switch (4-terminal) mounted under the dash on the brake peddle (like older VW's) just as you said. But later Jetta's (2006 on) and the B6 Passat used a hall-effect brake light switch (3-terminal) mounted under the hood on the master cylinder. The B6 Passat also uses a 4-terminal vacuum booster switch that has all 4 wires connected directly to the ABS Control Module ... that's probably what you're referring to.

The Jetta ABS pump and the Jetta ECU have no provisions for the vacuum booster switch, and there's actually a place to disable it in Address 03: ABS Brakes ... so I have it disabled.

Because the Jetta ABS pump and ECU require a 4-wire brake light switch (one side is N/O contacts "F" ... the other side is N/C contacts "F47") ... and the Passat hall-effect switch is only 3-wire ... I had to install a Jetta Peddle-mounted switch under the dash.

Although you could be right, I may have to look elsewhere for the fault ... I'm just examining EVERYTHING. When I started this project, I figured that it would be relatively simple ... because I "assumed" that the Jetta and Passat were much the same ... WRONG!

Free EOBD II Error Codes software is my software. The Free one is only on http://www.myturbodiesel.com/threads/free-eobd-ii-error-codes-software.2202/

The other forums don't show Free, just Google EOBD II Error Codes software the new version has been renamed VAG Fault Codes as it only covers VAG vehicles.

That's the older version with 10,266 error codes. There was a lot of EOBD generic codes with no solution. If you search Possible Cause for Unknown Symptom there are 1,629 codes. These have been removed from the new version. There are 132 new codes with no solution in the new version.

i don't know about US but in europe there are led brake lights, also these leds use a lot of resistor so they draw enough power to keep cecm happy, so no error bulb out, yep that's what i was referring to, mechanical brake switch...
you really did open a can of worms with this one... in my opinion look elsewhere for fault

m87a I am.

Today I'm going to recheck the brake light switch wiring (for the umteenth time!). I couldn't get the brake lights to go OFF initially, after the engine conversion ... even with the master cylinder brake light switch ... unplugged! Any time the ignition was on, the brake lights were on!

After trying the post-2005 Jetta brake light wiring (didn't work) ... I ended up using a 2002 VW Beetle wiring diagram (that may be where the problem is) ... and the brake lights worked properly! But that was before I connected the ECU wires T121/55 and T121/56.

Today, I'm going to try to connect it properly and see what happens.

I think I got it fixed!

OK, I think I've got it fixed! I rewired the brake light switch, cleared the codes, and drove the car for about 1/2 hour ... the brake fault didn't return!

I cut the 4 wires to the brake light switch under the dash ... then I temporarily connected them based upon the Jetta wiring diagrams in Bentley. I tried the diagrams for 2006, 2007, and 2008 Jetta's ... no dice. What finally worked was using the diagram for Jettas manufactured from May 2005 (not sure why it worked since the Jetta ECU is 2008, and the Passat is 2007).

What's interesting is ... if you pull the brake light fuse ... the brake lights turn ON! ... that's why my brake lights were on ... no power! On the newer VW's, the tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, and head lights aren't wired from the lights ... to the switches ... to the fuses like they used to be. ALL the lights are wired directly to the J519 Vehicle Electrical System Control Module FIRST, and it controls all their functions through the switches (Head lights, tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, DRL, etc.).

You guys probably already knew that ... but it was news to me!

Thanks for your help on this ... now I've just got to figure out the ABS, and how to get the EPB to work
