One question, when I was looking at the coding for the ECU today, when you go into "coding", there's a pop-up balloon with coding info in it ... and it says something to the effect of (should have taken a screen shot of it) ...

0000x?x
+1 = ABS Brakes
+2 = Airbags
+3 = Climate Control

0000xx?
4 = Manual Transmission
5 = Automatic Transmission

The above may be inaccurate, but you get the idea ... what does this mean? If it's accurate, then my ECU is coded wrong.

And concerning the EPB ... what if you were to leave it fully connected to power, but disconnect it from the CANbus altogether ... then disable it (in ABS and the CANbus, and anywhere else?).

It would simply be a 12V electrical device in the car that was fully functional, but not "seen" by the electrical system.

Although obviously, Auto-Hold would not work.

Using that example your ECU coding would be 0000065 if you have ABS, airbags, climate control and an Auto transmission.

The EPB is a fickle controller. Unless it is properly coded and connected it will not function, just throw faults.
There may well be some way of getting it to work but it's well beyond my meager levels of expertise unfortunately...

Interesting, here's a 2013 VW Passat 2.5L listed under "Reference Scans and Maps" ... it has no EPB! So maybe they simply don't pair up the 2.5 engine with the EPB for some reason ...

Yeah the NMS is not a B7 Passat....at least not in the RoW sense.
Its some sort of mutant mashup of a Passat and a Jetta.
So I don't know what the best path towards a working car for you is...is it easier to lose the EPB and install a manual park brake, is there some way to integrate an EPB into a NMS, is it all a bridge too far?

Thanks for all your help, I guess I'll just have to do more research on the ABS.

Yesterday, I eliminated the "Trunk Elec." fault. Apparently, it was looking for an electric trunk release (I've got a wagon) ... or something. I unchecked it in the CANbus coding (I think), and the fault went away. I really do have to remember to document exactly what changes I'm making.

I've still got a Brake Light Sw. fault and a Secondary Air Injection Relay fault that I've got to figure out (wiring issues). The Jetta uses a 4-terminal brake light switch ... the Passat uses a 3-terminal. That's probably why the Cruise Control will turn on, but it won't "set". The SAI works fine, so I may have wired it in a way that the Passat system doesn't "see".

Other than those two things, and the ABS issue (some or all of which may be causing the EPC light and EPB lights to come on) ... everything else seems to work fine. The EPB works fine, it gives me a fault simply because it can't "talk" with the ABS unit. If I can eliminate that line of communication, then maybe I can eliminate the Parking Brake fault ... and pave the way for a Jetta or newer Passat ABS pump.

I'll let you know what the outcome is, or if I have any other questions.

I forgot to ask, is there any way to program the correct Passat VIN number into the ECU? Any dangers or side-effects of doing so?

Today I fixed the Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay problem.

Apparently, there are several electrical components on these cars that must be run through the J271 relay ... because the car continues to do functions and calculations ... even up to 15 minutes AFTER the car is turned off, and the J271 relay powers them to do that! The Secondary Air Injection Pump Relay is one of those components.

I had it wired into a fuse that turns off with the ignition ... so hence, I got the following error code ...

After much research, yesterday I ordered a used 2008 VW Jetta ABS pump with control module (1K0 907 379 AC), mounting bracket, and plug end from eBay .... $85 including shipping.

After looking at the ABS wiring diagrams for both the 2008 Jetta and my 2007 Passat ... it looks like it will work. There are many VCDS scans on the internet using both my ECU and this ABS unit ... so coding between the two shouldn't be a problem. The above ABS unit also has ESP, so I should be able to retain that. The only downside is ... it doesn't have provisions for the Electric Parking Brake ... so I'll loose the Auto-Hold feature.

I'll have to rewire the Passat ABS plug since the Passat and Jetta ABS units use different plugs ... and of course, the wiring is slightly different. It won't be such a daunting task as the ECU was since there are only about 16 wires.

We'll see if this works! If it does, then that's the final frontier for this project!

I'll deal with the brake light switch fault after I get the ABS installed and working ... the fault may be at least partially because of the ABS problem ... we'll see.

Actually m87a, I already have a dash warning for the EPB in the MFD when I first start the car and begin traveling forward... even though my current VCDS scan says "no fault code found" for Address 53 - Parking Brake ... don't know what that's all about.

Within seconds the warning goes out.

I kind of figured that the Instrument Cluster had programming for the EPB ... because I cut the (only) wire going to the cluster from the EPB Control Module ... and I STILL had the MFD warning for the EPB!

I've got to switch out the Instrument cluster anyways because all three LCD's (MFD, Mileage, Time & Date) are dim for some reason. Just started doing that. I've read where that's a problem for some B5's and B6's.

Well, this week I received the Jetta ABS module and installed it. I disconnected the battery and removed the plastic engine cover. I unplugged the existing ABS unit, and removed all six brake lines. Then I removed the ABS unit from the frame mount.

When matching up the Jetta unit, I figured out a way to use the existing frame mount with the Jetta ABS pump. After it was mounted I reconnected all the lines. I had already carefully studied the line markings in various diagrams, you have to be careful because on the 2008-10 Jetta ABS unit, the lines are REVERSED from the 2007 Passat ABS unit!

It took a lot of line bending to make them fit ... AND look pretty and factory!

Then I bled the brakes thoroughly I've got good pedal!

I had already studied the Jetta and Passat ABS wiring diagrams, and charted them both in Excel ... so I was fairly clear what wires I needed to connect with what wires ... other than the EPB wires which obviously will not connect to the Jetta ABS unit.

The only problem was that the G419 Yaw Sensor is located in the EPB on the Passat! ... but not on the Jetta, so I had to purchase a used Jetta G419 from eBay (just received it today).

The only other issue is that I can't get the EPB to work now that the old Passat ABS unit is gone. You push the EPB button and the "BRAKE" light and the EPB button lights flash once ... then go out. No EPB. I'll deal with that later after I get the ABS working properly.

Here's the latest VCDS scan ... notice the numerous errors in the ABS unit since there is no G419 installed yet ... but at least the ECU is now coded to the ABS unit! Also notice that there's no communication between the TCM and the ABS ... not sure what that's about.

I'm not sure but I may have fixed the brake light fault too ... although in earlier scans today it showed up, now it's gone.

OK, I received the G419 Sensor yesterday and installed it. I did the Basic Settings for the Steering angle Sensor G85, Lateral Acceleration Sensor G200, Brake Pressure Sensor G201, and the Yaw Rate Sensor G202. But I've still got errors.

Here's my latest scan after driving the car for a while today (I've got all kinds of ABS codes! ... and I'm STILL getting the Brake Light Fault) ... and here's my questions ...

1. Since the G419 Module was incorporated in the EPB Module, I had to install a Jetta unit ... I can't find ANY diagrams on the web that show which direction it's supposed to be mounted. (I'm sure that's important). I got the wiring pigtail with it ... so I simply matched up the wires colors / pin numbers to the ABS plug.
2. Why am I now getting a transmission error "01316 - ABS Control Module 004 - No Signal / Communication"? Is this an ABS coding issue?
3. Why am I getting all the other "004 no signal / communication" errors? The ABS CAN wires are connected correctly. Is this also a coding issue?
4. How do I "un-activate" the ABS system function test? I must have activated it at some point.

Any ideas to help out would be GREATLY appreciated! (Part of the problem is, I'm still in the learning-curve with VAG-COM!)

OK, I read up on "ABS System Function Test" ... and I performed the test again in a BIG parking lot (apparently, the test wasn't completed and was in "limbo") ... then I cleared the codes and drove the car for a while.

Here's the most recent scan.

Most of the ABS faults are gone, with the exception of ...

"01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded 008 - Implausible Signal" and
"01309 - Power Steering Control Module (J500) 008 - Implausible Signal".

I'm still getting the "01316 - ABS Control Module 004 - No Signal/Communication" transmission fault too ... I'll recheck the wiring on Monday for the communication errors ...

Still LOTS of ABS communication faults!

OK, I'm still getting LOTS of ABS communication faults for some reason. I clear all the codes and the car is fine ... for a while. But after driving for a period of time, I begin getting all kinds of communication (primarily ABS) faults (see scan). I didn't have these before I switched the ABS pumps.

Here was my initial ABS rewiring process ...

I went through both the Jetta ABS wiring diagrams and the Passat B6 ABS wiring diagrams and marked down all of the ABS connections, pin locations, and wire colors respectively for both ABS plugs. Then I checked those pin numbers / wire colors with the actual Jetta / Passat ABS plugs (they were correct). Then I matched them up in Excel to know which wires to connect with what.

The only Passat wires not used by the Jetta ABS unit were ...

1. The four wires for the J540 EPB Module (T38/6; T38/14; T38/17; T38/19)
2. The four wires for the G483 switch on the brake vacuum booster (T38/8; T38/20; T38/21; T38/33)
3. One wire going to the J393 Comfort System Central Control Module (T38/5)
4. One wire going to the K216/E256/L71 ASR/ESP Button/Light to terminal 1 (T38/34) the Jetta doesn't use it

The only Jetta wire not used by the Passat was ...

1. One wire going to J519 E/2 & T121/56 ECU & Brake Switch "F" Term. 3 (T47/41)

All the rest of the wires were matched up to their equivalents, soldered together, and covered with shrink wrap. I just re-checked all of the wire colors and pin locations today, ESPECIALLY the CANbus wires to verify they were correct, that I hadn't "crossed" the two CANbus wire connections (Orange/Black & Orange/Brown). Everything checked out OK.

I also removed the ABS plug and reinstalled it several times to make sure it was getting a good connection. Drove the car, and after a while (not immediately) got the same communication faults. It's also odd that the transmission isn't communicating with the ABS ... and the ABS isn't communicating with the transmission.

Does ANYBODY have any clues? ... anything I should look for in VCDS? ...

How do I know that the ABS unit is good? ... any simple way to check it?

VCDS has a sequence which tests the ABS unit's functions.
Foot on the brake foot off etc, follow the instructions.
I think it's in adaptation, might be in basic settings I can't remember sorry...

Thanks kamold, I'll see if I can find those tests and run them.

I forgot to mention, when I was connecting the wires for the ABS plug, I tried connecting the Passat J540 EPB wires to the Jetta ABS module (two of the wire colors matched). The G419 is incorporated in the EPB control module on the Passat ... and I though I might be able to get it to work. It blew a fuse instead!

So it's possible I damaged the Jetta ABS unit!

I'll run those tests ... if that doesn't work, I got another identical 2008 Jetta ABS unit yesterday ($20) from the guy I bought the engine from. I'll connect it to the plug first and run a scan ... if it checks out OK, I'll switch the ABS control modules.

Hard to believe that the "final frontier" in this project (the ABS) is such a pain!

OK, I finally fixed the Brake Light Switch ... with some help from the forum here. The Cruise Control finally works for the first time too! There are potentially three different brake light wiring arrangements for Jetta's ... the wiring that worked was for a 2005 Jetta.

I also switched out the ABS Control Module last week ... but got the same multiple communication faults.

But Saturday, I just happened to pull the under-hood 30 Amp fuse for the ABS when the engine was off ... then reinstalled it, and heard a "click" from the ABS Module! It's still on! And this was after the car had been sitting all night!

I finally figured out the ABS communication faults!

Both the Passat ABS and the Jetta ABS use three fuses ... two main fuses, and one secondary fuse. On both the Passat and the Jetta, the main fuses are wired into terminal 30 ... in other words, they're hot all the time. But the secondary fuse on the Jetta ABS is wired into terminal 15 (it goes off with the ignition) ... the secondary fuse on the Passat is wired into terminal 30 (HOT all the time). That's the fuse I had used for the Jetta ABS pump.

So, when I would turn the engine off, the ABS Module was still on ... and was trying to communicate with the other modules (J533, J500, G85, J285, and ECU - see the VCDS scan above) through the CANbus ... and COULDN'T because they were turned off with the ignition! Hence, all the communication errors.

I simply had to rewire the secondary Jetta ABS power supply wire ... into a fuse that goes off with the ignition (terminal 15) ... PROBLEM SOLVED!

But now I'm still left with a "01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded 008 - Implausible Signal" fault ... so I'm kind of back to square one! Although I think coding should be easier to arrive at with this Jetta ECU / ABS combination ... I hope!

Here's the latest scan (notice the TCM cannot communicate with the ABS Module either, nor sure why) ...

I got the Electric Emergency Brake to work!

Yesterday, I got the Electric Emergency Brake to work ... I think because I rewired the ABS Secondary Power Supply wire to a terminal 15 fuse instead of a terminal 30 fuse.

I can turn the EPB ON ... only when the ignition is OFF (that's fine with me, keeps me from turning it on at 60 MPH!) ... and I can only turn it OFF when the ignition is ON.

When the ignition is OFF ... I simply press and hold the EPB button ... you can hear the EPB engage ... let go of the button and the dash "BRAKE" light remains on for about one minute, then goes out (although the EPB is still on). To disengage it, you start the car, the EPB button light and the dash "BRAKE" light turn on ... you simply press the EPB button and the Parking Brake releases.

I've disabled the EPB in Address 03: ABS Brakes simply because originally, the EPB was connected to the CANbus through the original Passat ABS pump ... but now, the EPB is no longer connected to the CANbus ... hence, it doesn't show up in the VCDS scans. But it works fine, although I no longer have Auto-Hold (also OK with me).

So, I'm left with the original question of this post ... the ABS coding.

Any ideas as to how to arrive at the correct coding? ... other than Kamold's idea of going though one number at a time? I know that the ECU and ABS module are compatible, since there are other examples of coding for their combination ... so why am I getting "1 Fault Found: 01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded 008 - Implausible Signal"? And why am I getting the "1 Fault Found: 01316 - ABS Control Module 004 - No Signal/Communication" for the transmission?

Any ideas? ... educated guesses? (The current VCDS scan is the same as the scan above)
