ok here goes.. 2008 Passat 2.0TSI (chain driven). Car came to me setting a cam/crank correlation code 16400/P0016. idled choppy but drove fine otherwise. no chain noise whatsoever. has a little over 105k and zero history (local used car dealer got it from the auction).

To date I've done about 10-12 of the TSI chain replacements so I'm no stranger to these.

I pulled the upper cover and measured everything as outlined in this thread

http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthr...Chain-Drive-P0016-Cam-Crank-correlation-check

and my measurements indicated a stretched or improperly installed chain. The tensioner was also nearly all the way extended. The guides did not look to be excessively worn. I replaced the chain and tensioner and now the measurements are dead on (62.5mm/125mm). I verified the front cover marks with a TDC stop when I had it all apart and the balancer/front cover mark is also perfect. Also worth noting, there was zero sludge under the valve cover. oil pressure hovers just under 20psi hot (90C) idle, and 45-50psi at 2000rpm

unfortunately it's still setting the 16400/P0016 code. I pulled the cover again to double check the physical timing and it's still spot on. The spool valve doesn't appear to be sticky or contaminated, and the solenoid draws current and snaps out when power is provided.

The autoscan is from shortly after a warm restart after clearing the codes. it randomly will set a cam sensor signal code but I did have the opportunity to swap the cam sensor with a friend's GTI and no change in either car.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Oil PSI issue or the timing is out and based on the slack on wrong side of the tensioner when oil PSI is made to retard timing.

the timing according to the chain links and my digital caliper is dead on, unless the measurements in the thread I linked above are wrong, and/or the dark links on the new (from VW) chain were in the wrong spots.

As mentioned, oil pressure is a touch under 20psi hot idle (measured at the sender under the oil filter), and 45-50psi at 2000rpm. well over 60psi on a cold start so I doubt it's a pressure issue unless it simply isn't getting to the camshaft adjuster for whatever reason

Could always be a bad adjuster...........however, I refer to what I aforementioned.

Can't even count the number of times the OP or tech said that it was in time and when I observed it was not!

I have to ask why are you not using the repair manual to setup the timing?

The issue with oil pressure testing.... there isn't a test port where the cam adjuster is. So while the oil filter may be getting good oil pressure, there could be issues on the top side of the engine.

Run the engine up to temp, let idle, go into 01-08-093.3, what is the value? Do a WOT snap, what does the 3rd field go to?

The timing chain was installed according to the service manual procedure. It's very simple with the cam chain especially when replacing it. the colored links align with the marks on the sprockets. After running the engine obviously the colored links aren't going to correspond anymore hence the measurements outlined in the other thread. The links will realign every 166 engine revolutions according to VW's EA888 study guide..

The thread I linked in my original post. Does it outline incorrect measurements?

As I mentioned before, this is not my first time doing one of these.

I'll check that after work today.. I don't remember if it was group 93 or 94, but one of them i believe was stuck at 28KW.

It did something weird once though. I held rpm up near 4k (limiter in park) for about 20 seconds and when it came back down it idled smooth. revved it a little (1500) and it immediately got choppy again. I'll try to get it to do it again this evening and log 93 and 94

Sounds like oil PSI/Volume related to me and maybe the sump is part plugged at the screen or sludge is congregating during operation with floaters.

Drop the pan to inspect the sump.......

The screen should be removed & observed with a flashlight in reverse direction & to see the path is clear.

Apparently you need your basics rechecked........

If the sump screen is part blocked it will be like you installed a small volume pump and maintained PSI.

PSI is not a good indicator for a volume test.

Yeah I probably will pull the pan. There was no evidence of sludge up top but I know that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't anything in the pan. It's easy enough to pull, but I have a feeling there won't be anything in there especially since it malfunctions immediately on a cold start.

Than maybe you have a stuck closed PSI valve raising PSI to the point of uncontrolled effect with thick fluids as a result.

That's why we JPPSG to get to the bottom of things.........

RULE :
Never ever do timing chains or adjusters without inspecting a sump and all control + changing the filter.

Yeah I know about JPPSG lol..

This one initially seemed like just another routine TSI chain job.. Not this time.. I know y'all don't really know me from a hole in the wall but I'm not one to ever throw parts at a problem without testing things first. I can't count how many I see come in that someone emptied the parts cannon trying to sort out something that ends up being a $50 fix at the end of the day

If you can rev it and make it idle differently I would say it's definitely oil volume. Change the oil filter and see how it behaves if it's still misbehaving dropped oil pan check the pickup. If everything checks out okay pressurize the system and check for leaks. Don't let the engine warm up in the bay and then check oil pressure go out and drive it for 10 miles and then come back and check for oil pressure

I forgot to mention check cam correlation before it warms up and then check can correlation after it warms up. If Cam correlation while engine is cold is good and it only falters after it warms up then you know you have the chain on right and you have oil volume issues

The hole in the wall just isn't going to do it for me.......

Let me follow up on my reiteration.........to proper lubrication guidelines.
It's important to check oil beforehand & to get things fired up properly!
It's further more important that it be flowing with oil not just an occasional drip!

He says cold but yeah can be inverse on temp if a sticky issue causing too much PSI too.

The cam correlation is off right from a cold start since it's choppy as soon as the idle starts to settle down (also sets codes imediately), and still off when at operating temperature. The more I think about it, the more I think it has to be a volume issue to the actuator itself. I know it takes a certain amount of oil pressure inside the actuator (8psi IIRC) to release the pin so it can adjust away from the fully retarded position. It's acting like it's physically stuck in the retarded position most of the time.

oil and filter are fresh.. Liquimoly 5w40 is the oil that is in it, and a Mann filter.

Unfortunately I cannot drive the car out on the road since it's a dealer's car and is not registered. There is a dead end road by my shop that's about a mile long that I can get away with driving on but that's about it. I can get the oil temperature up to near coolant temperature just holding the rpm up for a few minutes. The pan was reading 185F surface temperature when I checked the pressure before.

My first step this evening is going to be pulling the pan to inspect for debris/clogged screen etc.

the timing according to the chain links and my digital caliper is dead on, unless the measurements in the thread I linked above are wrong, and/or the dark links on the new (from VW) chain were in the wrong spots.

- The values found in the Audi Volkswagen - 2.0L Chain Drive - P0016 Cam/Crank correlation check are correct, the values are from some of my old dealer training material and have been verified by my self several times, most recently last month on a 2011 Passat CC engine job.

Silly question I need to ask, because I see no mention of it, but did you happen to look at the 'Camshaft Bridge' as mentioned in the correlation check forum post? See image ref below again....

The screen must not be missing, damaged, etc... if so I would check the camshaft/head for wear and replace worn/damaged parts as needed.

Hope that helps,

drpeter

OMFG..........

Timing starts out at the FULL advanced position....... not the retarded for the retarded that think this.
Second it seeks a retarded target based on oil permitted to change it by the solenoid.......:p
The pin locks it in the advanced position to aid in cold start because cars start better cold with advanced timing not retarded.

That is why when no oil PSI is exhibited the adjuster will display and over advanced DTC!

Nice Post Peter............When will we make them understand?

I think the screen was previously removed. the check ball is still in there but the screen and plastic surround are completely gone. I didn't see any evidence of leftover screen or plastic bits anywhere.

I'll pull the bridge back off and double check for wear at the camshaft interface. Are there specs for the inside diameter of the bridge or outside diameter of the camshaft?

This thing came from the auction so at this point I wouldn't be surprised if someone took the vanes out of the actuator.

There's absolutely ZERO need to be condescending or to sit there and call me retarded.

According to the self study guide, the cam locks in the retarded position. Is VW wrong?

Silly question I need to ask, because I see no mention of it, but did you happen to look at the 'Camshaft Bridge' as mentioned in the correlation check forum post?

Kind of what my MVB 093.3 question is leading up to.

All hail Tech Tip 01-15-08

2008 - 2015 with those damn chain drive engines. P0011, P0016, P000A, P0341, and or P052A

MVB 093.3 should not go over +/- 5 degrees. If so, suspect that the screen located in the camshaft adjuster bridge has come apart and lodged itself within the camshaft adjuster spool and the intake camshaft adjuster.

blah blah blah... more stuff I'm glossing over now... ah, the last part of this Tech Tip...

Despite the failure found, the repair should include replacement of the camshaft adjuster bridge, intake camshaft and the spool valve adjuster

Poop just got expensive if not covered under some kind of extended warranty. :( At any rate, see if you can get yourself a copy of Tech Tip 01-15-08 (November 13, 2015) from your local dealer. I'd gladly give you a copy of mine, but legal reasons prevent it. :banghead:
