Quick question. When an Auto-Scan is done, at the top it lists a load of module numbers. Is VCDS using some kind of intelligence to gather this list or is it simply just looking in the CAN Gateway "Installation List" for any items that have been ticked as being installed?

If the vehicle has a CAN gateway that supports that function, the installed list can be determined with Auto-Scan auto-detect using the CAN gateway and you'll get that summary of fault status per module at the beginning of the scan, because the CAN gateway has all that data cached. If the vehicle doesn't do diagnostics via CAN and you choose a chassis manually, the module list will be as-configured in AutoScan.txt/MyAutoScan.txt in C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS and you won't have the summary (because the CAN gateway either doesn't exist or doesn't support that function).

Thanks Jason. I think that has answered my question perfectly. The CAN Gateway in my car does have in "Installation List" and I always use the "Auto-detect (CAN only)" option when I do an Auto-Scan but I have never taken a note of what items were actually ticked in that list. However, from your reply it appears that I can just look at that module number list at the top of any the my past Auto-Scans I have done on my car and those are the items that are were installed ("ticked") in my CAN Gateway "Installation List" at the time I did the scan. This is correct, yes?

And is it the CAN Gateway Installation List also drive what buttons you see on the "Installed" tab of the "Select Control Module" screen?

The list isn't just modules that have been ticked as "installed". It's modules that are ticked as installed (whether the gateway thinks they are present or not) and modules that gateway thinks are present (whether they are ticked "installed" or not). The latter would be a module that shows up in the list as "Unregistered".

OK, maybe will make things a bit clearer if I put some context around why I'm asking.

Over the weekend I installed a PolarFIS device in my car (another related post about that HERE). The PolarFIS is installed by plugging it in series with the CAN Gateway. So the connector that usually plugs into the CAN Gateway plugs into the top of the PolarFIS instead, and a piece of loom coming out of the bottom of the PolarFIS then plugs into the CAN Gateway.

Since I've installed the PolarFIS, I'm getting some new fault codes that won't clear. I think the PolarFIS may have installed ("ticked") module "77-Telephone" in my CAN Gateway which appears to be the crux of the problem. However, I can't be sure because I don't know if module 77 was ticked before I introduced PolarFIS to the car as I have never made any explicit records of my GW installation list. I have certainly never made changes to GW installation list myself while I've owned the car.

Before I start digging a bit deeper or firing off emails to Auto Polar, I just want to try and ascertain if module 77 was already ticked as an installed module in the CW before I installed the PolarFIS device.

If something is ticked but the gateway can't talk to it, then VCDS would produce: "Status: Cannot be reached". Ergo, in your first scan above, 77-Telephone was not ticked.

OK, so that can only mean that PolarFIS is to blame for the installation of module 77. Thanks for the confirmation.

PolarFIS is displaying its information under the "Phone" page in the MFD so I think it might be masquerading as a telephone control module which could explain the mysterious appearance of module 77. I don't know.

Everything seems to be working OK and I've not noticed any issues so far but my OCD kicks in whenever I see fault codes that shouldn't really be there and which I can't get rid of, especially faults like "1048659 - Function Restricted due to Missing Message(s)" in the CG :mad:

I think I'll try unticking module 77 in the CG installation list and see if PolarFIS stops working, or if doing that just triggers PolarFIS to automatically reinstall module 77 again.

If you contact their tech support, also ask them how much longer us poor B8 S4 owners are going to have to wait to have something comparable ;) I'd gladly trade a DTC for all the info they're able to display! :thumbs:

And I would gladly trade my 1P FR+ with working PolarFIS for a B8 S4 without PolarFIS. Deal? :D

Anyway, I've now done some further experimentation by unticking module "77-Telephone" in the CAN Gateway which PolarFIS appeared to have installed to see what happened. After doing this another Auto-Scan came back completely clean with no faults (hurrah! :D) and to my surprise, PolarFIS still seemed to work without any issues that I could find. Even all the Bluetooth phone functionality still seemed to work seamlessly. I switched off the car and left it so the control modules would go to sleep, then came back an hour or so later and everything was still working fine - PolarFIS, Bluetooth phone functionality, the works. Another Auto-Scan revealed that PolarFIS had not reinstalled module 77 in the CG again and the scan was still completely fault-free so this was a good result...almost.

What I have found is that if I "switch off" PolarFIS (done in the MFD/MFI under the PolarFIS menus) which effectively just removes/hides all evidence of it from the MFD/MFI screens, and then switch it back on again (done using a secret command which is to hold down the OK button on the MFSW for at least 10 seconds), module "77-Telephone" gets reinstalled back into the CG again. This seems to happen every time PolarFIS is switched from an "off" state to an "on" state. It doesn't happen if PolarFIS is left in an "on" state, even if ignition power is removed and reapplied, or after control modules have been asleep for a period of time. I can of course uninstall module 77 again using VCDS if I ever have a reason to "switch off" PolarFIS and then switch it back on again later, but it raises the question as to why PolarFIS is installing that module into the CG in the first place if it's evidently not needed. I've now raised a support ticket with Auto Polar asking why PolarFIS is installing module 77. Maybe it's just a bug(?) Hopefully they will get back to me with a decent explanation.

I'm not expecting anyone here to chip in with any help because I doubt they can when my problem is to do with a 3rd party device, but I just thought I'd post up my findings in case anyone else in the world installs PolarFIS and gets the same issue, and is able to find this thread :)

If I get a response from Auto Polar I will post it back here.
