I am researching this job before starting- I am only investigating as there is a random clunk when tur and I read that there are well recorded problems with these steering racks ( I am basically assuming the worst in advance, happy not to be right!)

My non-genuine parts supplier warned me that according to VIN the car has a Gen 2 steering rack and I would only likely be able to get a new unit which is Gen 3 which should be backwards compatible. Elsawin confirms this saying Gen 2 is no longer available from Audi although I have not called Audi to check. Part number of the steering rack listed by VIN is 1K1 423 055 K

I have read Ross-Tech WIKI for the Golf MK5 1K found here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Steering_Assist

I assume this is the same type of system as I have on the A3 due to similar age.

From the WIKI, most notably I see the note at the very bottom i.e.:

"After Replacing this Control Module several Steps have to be performed in the following Order:

Check/Update Steering Aid Adaptation Channels 002-009
Perform Basic Setting for Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
Perform Steering Limit Stop Adaptation
Upload/Install a proper Characteristic Curve

Characteristic Curves need to be uploaded with the Factory Tool which has the latest Brand Version installed as well as access to the latest Flash Updates. Unless you have a Factory Tool which meets these Requirements the only Solution to accomplish this Step is to take the Car to the Dealer and have them perform this.

In case you are having trouble with procedure please contact us directly and we will assist you with the Coding Process. Every inquiry on this topic has to include a full Auto-Scan as well as which parts have been replaced and why, also make sure the Auto-Scan includes the complete VIN of the vehicle in question."

My questions:

1) Can I conclude that there is still no way I will be able to upload/install a characteristic curve for a newly fitted steering rack using VCDS?
2) Assuming no to the above, will I be able to drive the car without the characteristic curve installed the 10 miles or so the nearest dealer having done everything else?

thanks in advance

Andrew

I would seriously check for a broken or incorrectly seated strut spring and even a bad strut mount bearing, control arm worn or even a shifting sub-frame from improper TQ or gap between uni-body.

How have you verified the steering gear is what is at fault and it is not loose slightly failing to be secured to the sub-frame cross member?

1) Can I conclude that there is still no way I will be able to upload/install a characteristic curve for a newly fitted steering rack using VCDS?
Correct.

2) Assuming no to the above, will I be able to drive the car without the characteristic curve installed the 10 miles or so the nearest dealer having done everything else?
I've driven my son's 2007 Mk.5 Golf from home (where rodents chewed through some wires) to a local shop while the power steering was completely dead. I think that was only about 3 miles rather than 10. It wasn't exactly fun, but it was entirely doable.

I'm not sure whether your new rack will be completely dead without the upload, or whether it has some generic curve in it that allows it to function to some degree.

thanks Jack/Uwe. Definitely some more checking to do before pulling the steering rack out; not a cheap or easy job to do. I'll find the gremlin eventually! Thanks for the answers and suggestions.
