07 GTI Won't Start. Turns over and fires a couple times

Hi, new to the forum and to computer controlled VWs. Background: I bought this 2007 GTI not running. PO said it just quit at a light and that was it. It sat for 9 months with no battery. I bought a battery and I started doing research and checking things. I replaced the spark plugs, crank sensor, cam sensor, and HPFP cam follower. Ran compression test, checked good. 130ish on all 4 (207K miles). Changed oil, new filter, checked for spark and fuel pressure, checked fuses, cleaned the MAF. No obvious cracks in intake tubes. Engine cranks and fires a couple times then nothing, just keeps cranking. Same results with starter fluid. OBDII codes wouldn't read so I bought a VCDS from Ross-Tech. The output tells me MAF, intake leak, or bad injectors (or all 3!). I will check the MAF with my multi meter tonight. Any thoughts?

Put new fuel,fuel filter and when it start give some revs up and keep it there for 3-5min. After erase DTC and run again with new auto-scan .

130 PSI compression seems a bit low to me, generally we'd like to see +160 PSI. Having said that, I'd expect the engine to still run.

Pull the plugs up, crank... any fuel poofing out?

Add oil to cylinders and see if compression comes up.

Check fuel PSI and volume delivery from HPP and to it.

Check or soak/clean fuel injectors and check spray pattern if possible.

Check intake and PCV for leaks as well as a stuck N80 dumping fuel resulting in washing cylinders/rings.

All good advice. Thanks. Now to decide which to do first. Before putting in new plugs, I pulled the old ones after trying to start and checked color and condition. One was wet, two were a little moist, and one was pretty dry. All were a dark brown color, typical of burning oil. I did not see any "poof" of fuel out the coil holes when turning it over to check the plugs, but I wasn't really looking for it either. I picked up a new fuel filter today.

I decided to empty the fuel tank first. My siphon pump tube won't go down the fuel filler tube enough. Is there another easy way to drain the tank? Is 9 month old gas already bad enough to make the engine not start? It doesn't smell like old gas. :confused:

Run fuel output hose at sender to fuel collection tank and run the pump manually. Add your own additional hose to extend from lift pump.

Sounds simple enough. When you say manually, you mean run a 12v lead directly to the tank pump? I tested the MAF yesterday by putting my multimeter on ohms across the connector pins and got no readings. Should they be open or show resistance?

Emptied the gas tank. New filter and fresh 91 octane and no change. I'll start looking at the PCV and N80 and checking out the injectors by listening for pulse, then if necessary, pulling them and cleaning them.

I pulled the PCV and it flows both ways freely. I assume it should shut on one direction. I'm going to get a spark tester (OTC 6589) and check the coils again. Maybe they're weak but showed spark. Can't get to it for a couple weeks though.

dont strain ur brain. ur compression is way to lo. when u checked comp was the battery charged if not charge battery and retest. like jack said add oil just a few drops should do. if you put to much oil u can damage the engine

OK, I'm back from my 100 mile mountain bike race in Oregon. Finished 2nd in my class. Woohoo! I replaced the bad PCV and tried starting, not much better than before. I pulled the plugs and the small hose from the PCV to simulate WOT and ran the compression test again. 1-4 got 160, 165, 156, 156, so compression looks good.

What's the best test of the MAF without the engine running? I tried continuity across the pins and got nothing. Should I test for voltage with KOEO?

I could smell fuel when I was running the compression test, but the new plugs don't all have a uniform appearance. #1 and 2 were a normal brown color, #4 was a little too clean, and #3 was pretty dark and sooty. I have an injector tester coming, so I'll go there next.

Sounds like washed cylinders with excessive gasoline to me.........correct it.

I'm really stumped. I sent the injectors for cleaning and testing and it turns out they were all good. Before and after tests were nearly identical. While I had them out I cleaned the intake valves and runners and throttle body. I tested the coils again, this time with a spark tester, and it showed pretty good spark on all 4. Reassembled and I'm still getting nothing, not even a pop. I even tried some starting fluid down the intake tube, but with the distance from that the cylinders, it may have been pointless.

How can I test the HPFP? If the LPFP works, will the engine have enough fuel pressure to start? The fuel pressure relief valve squirts fuel.

Anything I haven't tried that I should? I ordered a new evap purge valve - just in case, but I don't like shooting in the dark.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

Is the exhaust plugged with bananas or CAT plugged............. is intake clear for air way?

You have compression?

Engine in time?

I have good compression.

Haven't checked for clogged cat yet.

If the valve timing was off, wouldn't there be interference between pistons and valves? I'll see what I can do to check that.

I felt a pulse at the exhaust while cranking so I think it's clear. Then I pulled the plugs and cranked for several seconds to check for fuel. The plugs came out bone dry and there is no hint of fuel smell after cranking. What controls the injectors? Maybe they're not firing. After sitting an hour or overnight it will fire a couple times like some fuel seeped into a cylinder over time.

What controls the injectors?

The ECU and consumer supply current paths as per RTFB observed in WD.

Have you checked all fuses in this car, ignition switch, and all terminal relays + ground points?

OK, I got the Bentley and did RTFB and followed WD. Great book; says for troubleshooting use VAS 5051/5052, which I don't have and can't afford. I pulled all the related relays and checked them, as well as fuses. They all work. I disconnected the battery to pull some of the relays inside under the dash and now my auto-up/down windows stopped working. :banghead: I have a feeling it could be the ECU. How can I test that?

I disconnected the battery to pull some of the relays inside under the dash and now my auto-up/down windows stopped working.
After disconnecting the battery you need to reset the one-touch windows by running them up and holding the switch for several seconds, then running them down and holding the switch for several seconds.
