8J TT convertible flap output test not working

Hi
I have vcds 14.10.2 running and wish to Adapt Flap Motors on my 8J Audi tt convertible roof (26)
With the roof stowed when I attempt to run flap Output Tests they don’t move but test just reports 'ON'
I have cleared all dtc’s, power cycled ignition and laptop, even tried a different pc – all to no avail.
The indicator lamp test work as does other controller tests eg windows
The roof itself is working ok too so you could say I don't need to run Adaption but why won't it work?
Do i need a different lbl file or security code perchance

Arrgh - I now realise that was what I should have done first - doh!

Ok - see scan results below - including intermittent errors from flaps ??!
Not worried about other codes for now.

So I tried left and right Flap output tests with fault codes as listed, then I cleared fault codes and retried - both times with same results

Flaps failed to shift and simply report ON - (with engine running or off)

I note that amongst other issues wolfmanjack couldn't get his flaps to move either

What does the 'Convertible Top Flap Initialisation' Output Test do? Or do I have to subscribe to erWin for that?

I'm wondering if the only control module 26 output test I can get to run is the indication lamp?

I accept that I may reach the point where I need to replace the flap motor, they are recognised as troublesome, but I was able to get things working again as follows:

First I cleared the Module 26 DTC

Next I ran left and right flap output tests (but the flaps never moved)

Lastly I ran 'Convertible Top Flap Initialisation' - this was greyed out before I tried the flap tests and isn't mentioned in your Adaption guidelines.

It all seemed to recover the situation and the roof is working again.

I'm now wondering if your Adaption guidelines work for non North American cars?

Those control modules aren't significantly different so I don't believe the Wiki procedure or Output test function would vary from market to market. I don't have any first hand experience with this roof system but I dug up NAR TPI 2018777/7 to refresh my memory:

It points to TPI 2015779/7 (Convertible top adjustment options) to diagnose/repair mechanical adjustment issues followed by the VAS test plan (Output Test sequence) and notes the complete convertible top run must be completed before exiting the Output Test sequence.​

The only thing I'm not entirely sure about is the VCDS operation "Convertible Top Flap Initialisation" because that's the one I have had success with based on the phone support ticket feedback. If you haven't used that function alone please do at some point followed by the roof cycle to see if the DTC clears at that point.

Either way, this may happen after low battery voltage alone in some cases but the latest/greatest revised parts couldn't hurt at some point to avoid reoccurring problems.

The bad news is that you cannot operate the roof with Top Flap Initialisation Test Started, it seems to lock it out.

Repeated fast operation of the switch gets it to stutter into life as if it's controller is busy occupied running .

Stopping the test allows one to open/close the roof ok.

However from looking at the measuring block data taken before running 'initialisation and later afterwards it seems it may have had some effect as the 'open flap' voltage threshold has changed and, after all, setting the threshold voltages that signal flaps open/closed is I guess what the initialisation/adaption is all about.

Oh, running the 'Testing Motors for Convertible Flaps' Output Test still has no effect.

So, to summarise, the original adaptation guide doesn't work as flap test doesn't move flaps and the amended Flap Initialisation instructions don't work either - at least for me.

Hey it would be great if I had another TT convertible to run VCDS on eh.

Yeah :) Another 8J TT without any DTCs would be ideal to baseline but I don't know anyone with one of those vehicles.

The TPI explicitly says not to exit Output tests prior to operating the roof but based on your detailed feedback ... I have to wonder at this point if the guided test plan deactivates the function and you only need to leave the diagnostic session with address 26 open?

I suppose its conceivable that we both have some kind of scrambled controller that allows the roof and flaps to work but doesn't respond to an output test but what about the possibility that vcds might be at fault?

It sounds like you may not have been able to test them on an 8J TT?

As I said upstream the only output test that seems to work is the one that lights the roof open warning indicator.

Yeah, that wasn't my work so I didn't delete it from the Wiki. Having it there however will generate feedback .. although now that I think about it that may be limited to broken vehicles rather than fully functional baseline roof systems.

WolfmanJack is from the US so that should rule out market specific diagnostic functions discrepancies. RoW repair info on the other hand is market specific so you may need to search erWin Audi by VIN to see if anything is available for this specific vehicle.

I doubt this is a scrambled controller problem because both vehicles have fault codes stored in the 26 controller. We haven't received negative feedback on the Convertible Top Flap Initialisation Output test function but .. our phone support tickets are mainly repair shops with vehicles that just had the latest flap motors installed. WolfmanJack mentioned the VW dealer replaced his motors but I wonder if they were the latest/greatest from the Audi dealer parts department or not?

It sounds like you may not have been able to test them on an 8J TT?
No, I dug to confirm the label file information matched the test plan and transferred it into the Wiki but I do not have any personal experience with that roof system.

I don't think VCDS is at fault here but you can do the following with a fault free controller and email the resulting files in the Debug folder:

[Options]
Change the Debug level from 0 -to- 1024
[Apply]

At that point you can connect to the #26 roof controller and select Convertible Top Flap Initialisation. Please use your best judgement at this point but I would leave that test active/enabled for at least 10 seconds.

[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

After exiting VCDS you can check this location C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug for a file named DEBUG26.DLM. Eric may be able to determine if VCDS receives feedback from the controller when attempting to run the Convertible Top Flap Initialisation reset based on that information.

Oh, I forgot to add - I dug out a handful of euro's and scoured Erwin

The roof operation mechanism is described in detail in A075S00332V-Nr_391__AUDI_TT_Roadster.pdf but as regards initialisation it simply says

"After repair work on the convertible top covers, convertible top cover senders G596 and G597 must
be adapted to the convertible top operation control unit J256. This can only be accomplished using
a VAS tester and the Guided Fault Finding or Guided Functions option."

Did the debug files get to you ok Dana?

Having experimented some more I reckon the Reinitialisation Test resets the flap motors open/closed threshold voltages to 70 and 160
Having exited the reinit test and operating the roof a few times allows the controller to adjust the thresholds to be within 10v of the readings it's actually seeing from the flap motors.
I guess it would store the settings when you close the controller (?)imho

If this theory is correct then new flap motor adaption process would be:-
Run (and stop) Reinitialisation and then run open/close flap tests a few times - but the open/close flap tests don't work for me - doh!

Where did your wiki info originate?

btw I have opened up and inspected a flap motor and they are not very complex.
About the only thing that could go wrong is for a variable resistance track or contact to develop a fault and send a rogue voltage reading causing the controller to have a fit. I'll post photo's elsewhere.

sounds a lot like what I located in NAR TPI 2018777/7 and the mechanical redirection to TPI 2015779/7.

I didn't originally create that page but the new info was based on the TPIs in addition to locating which Outputs should be supported by the 26 module. After doing so I dug to see what the factory scan tool test plan would do. All of it matched the notes in our label file so someone else had already been there and done that :) I didn't think the label file instructions were incorrect based on personal success working with repair shops over the phone .. but double checking never hurts. At the least we have the Wiki page discrepancy partially sorted.

I agree and suspect it is a potentiometer reading the 26 module isn't happy with but pics would be great!

We just received a NAR scan from a 2008 TT with new flap motor(s) installed and 02000 - Switch Position - Implausible Signal - Intermittent stored. I'll keep an eye on that conversation if I'm unable to reply directly.

Hmm - so anyone got any good theories as to why, when vcds asks the controller to move the flaps it just carries on running, nothing moves and it doesn't report 'end'? And the same thing happens when asked to 'reinitialise'

The good news is that flaps (and roof) are currently all working fine and when controller is asked to cycle the dash roof indicator light it manages that just fine!!

If I were to unplug and reconnect the controller in an attempt to 'reset' it might I be 'lifting up a stone'?

Internal, I replied to E?ID=269727 asking him to try the V383 and V381 Output Tests after the new flap motors are calibrated using the Convertible Top Flap Initialisation procedure.
