Hi!
Our 2010 A5 888 2.0 tfsi engine just lost power, ESP is on mil on and off.
Vcds says misfire on cylinder 3 P0303 Misfire Detected
Engine got no power and got a bad smell and smoke of fuel from the exhaust
Engine does not start up easy, shakes/does not run smooth, and feels and sounds like one cylinder is dead.
Strange thing, I cleared the codes just to confirm fault in no 3.
Now there no codes at all but engine still hard to start, shakes/vibrates, sounds like it’s only on 3 and there that massive smoke smelling fuel from the exhaust.
I’m thinking more and more in faulty / stuck open injector, but how to confirm if and which one(s)?
or am i lost/wrong as usual?

will vcds be able to show me what rail pressure is, and what it's suposed to be?
I’m thinking “if no pressure until just before engine starts (have to crank it lots of turns now) then I concentrate on injector(s)
Hopefully I find one cylinder flooded, if I got spark and compression then it must be the injector right?
I’ve never seen this kind of fuel fog from any exhaust before.
I and my clothes smelled like I’ve been swimming in fuel!
Pistons, rods, bearings, chains, tensioners and so only got 1600km (2500miles) on them sins dealer rebuilt engine to cure oil consumption.

It is seriously advised you get an RTFB and in addition to the aforementioned VCDS video Uwe pointed you too, that actual mechanical tests be done to correlate consistency of OBD tests and for FOD.

Thanks Uwe and european Jack.
Now I have a game plan.
Remove all coils and sparkplugs and inspect.
Also inspect inside of cylinders (and top of pistons) using my small USB camera.
If there’s any of what you call FOD inside, or markings, pitching from sutch passing the combustion chamber, I might call it a day and my be trade it as is!
BUT if nothing is pounded, pitched, lose or otherwise bad inside I will go on checking rail pressure.
I now know that’s supposed to be done with a “warm” engine, but I don’t think I can stand that much fuel fog fumes 

hello,i could bet that you have a bad fuel injector valve.....and bad coilpacks as well,VW has really struggled with these injector valves that you will be surprised if you were to key your VIN into ETKA,almost 5 revisions.....it could get worse and dump fuel into combustion chamber thereby causing hydrolock,as some seep into oil pan,try swapping coilpacks to see if misfire vacates.....

The HPP can also leak raw fuel in sump too causing #3 failure or ultimate engine destruction.

I looked inside all 4 cylinders, nothing bad.
Got hands on a used 07K905115F coilpack (same as the others)
Also changed oil and oilfilter (no fuel smell from old fuel)
Started engine, little ruff at first (but not as bad as before) after 45-60sek I went normal!
I have ordered 4 brand new coils.
QUESTION: can the ignition fault counter be reset?
Cyl #1&2 has 200 #3 750 #4 500 (not the exact numbers)
I think: starting from zero (0) is a good idea with the new coilpacks.
More misfire at #3 after new coilpaks = injector problem

Coil pack & plugs failure are a result of secondary ignition failure during continued use & while in ultimate misfire & that still is not corrected now huh?

Jack, I’m sorry for not being able to express myself in English.
No fault codes present as of now (only got the fault codes from first post who I erased back then)
The misfire counter number must be from cars birth and that’s why I would like to reset the counter.
The “750” number can be read just with key on (engine NOT running).
Wife have driven car +60km on one used and 3 original to the car coilpack with no fault code
The 4 new coilpacs is to arrive monday or tuesday.
After installing them I would like to reset the counter..

Reset the fault memory 3-5 times fast and without an engine restart It should reset I believe when checking after a verified key cycle and being re-coded.

Then cold reboot the car battery with bridge.

I understand the procedure until here.
Caldstart (disconnect battery wait a bit than reconnect the battery) but what is the bridge??
….. discharge positive cable while disconnected???
Please have patience with me I’m just a dumbas and not in my native language...

Did you when battery is disconnected, connect a bridge wire from one side to other of terminals in car & "NOT the Battery"!, than turn ignition ON during wait time than turn key off, remove bridge and reconnect battery?

No, done nothing yet. Still waiting for the colipacks to arive. But now i understand the bridge and why to do it. I'l be back reporting the outcom as son as i installed new coilpacks and executed your counter clearing instruction.

I replaced the coilpacks some 2 weeks ago and tried only half the reset advice
“Reset the fault memory 3-5 times fast and without an engine restart it should reset I believe”
-no misfire counter reset.
I now need to know if I need a code to reactivate the “Bang & Olufssen” system if I disconnect the battery.
I bought a new battery that I will replace it as soon as I know that I will be able to play music afterwards (the old battery is just that, old and a litle weak)
-and then I will perform the entire procedure including drain all current from system (the bridge thing) before reconnecting the new battery.
I will report when I know the result.
