Hi all,

I've recently acquired a '58 Caddy Maxi Life and have been slowly working through its issues. The latest one to happen, is a totally unresponsive starter only a couple of hours after I had stopped the car. I went back to it a few hours later again and it started without hesitation.
I have previously noticed a hesitation when starting warm, this may be unrelated.
Fault codes for terminal 30 and cam sensor have been persistent, as was the ignition switch. The ignition switch has since been replaced and the fault code has disappeared (newer scan)
The cambelt has just been replaced and this sensor fault may well stay clear if the belt was stretched, but not sure about that one.
Other than starting or not, as the case may be, there appears to be no other issue, even the wipers work as they should, although the fault code for terminal 30 appears to indicate a fault with them.

Ignore the radio faults - That's resolved also.

Scan below.

The camshaft position sensor can cause "hesitation" (longer cranking) while the ECU figures things out, but it shouldn't cause a no-crank at all; that's likely the ignition switch.

Thank you for the response.

I have cleared all faults now apart from the no signal - intermittent on the G40.

Re the ignition switch, it is new and has not thrown any fault codes, unlike the one that I replaced. I cannot rule out an intermittent fault with it, but would have thought that it would have given a code if faulty.

I'm concentrating on the CMP sensor right now and have two pins with 5v, presumably a B+, a signal from the ECU and I have a ground, but the ground has 10 ohms on it. That seems high for a ground, unless going through something else. Are there wiring diagrams available to find the location of the ground, as I don't really want to be pulling the loom apart unnecessarily.

Many thanks

Camshaft sensor replaced.

Fault changed from "no signal - intermittent" to "no signal" hard fault. Old sensor refitted and fault back to intermittent.

That doesn't really help though, just indicates an unserviceable new unit.

Car failed to start again, a tap on the solenoid brought it back to life. The starter was change and it did feel a bit rough, so crossed fingers that it's resolved.

Still would like the wiring for the cam sensor though, that's bound to reappear.

Well, it has been a few years since I first looked into the camshaft sensor fault, mainly as the car ran and started ok, except when warm, but I have revisited the problem and have the following issue...
The next sensor replaced, removed the intermittent "no signal", but introduced an "implausible signal" with 0-60º variation in the torsion value. This made the car very hesitant to start, hot or cold.
The sensor was replaced again, this time returning a -2.5º torsion value, but still an "implausible signal" fault code (P0341). I adjusted the value down to -0.5º. The car starts better, but is still a little hesitant hot or cold.
I still believe the sensor to be the issue, but have yet to fully test the wiring back to the ECU.
Prices for sensor vary wildly from £20 up to £120 for the OEM item. How much do you have to spend to get a reliable sensor and what brands are recommended/respected?
Going right back to the original fault, the original intermittent sensor always allowed the engine to light up at the turn of the ignition, subsequent sensors tried so far, do not and introduce a certain level of hesitation.

3 (or more, it's not clear to me from your description) sensor changes and you still think it's the sensor? Either you are very unlucky with sensors or (more likely?) the fault lies somewhere else.

Please post an Auto-Scan with the latest sensor fitted so we can see the status as it is today.

Late fix, but the problem is solved. After four different cam sensors, the fourth was the only one to remove the fault code.
I wouldn't say the car is super smooth yet, but at 140K miles, it isn't exactly new.
Edit: For info, it was a second hand OEM item, so of a known quantity of sorts.
