Battery went dead on my B7 RS4 since I haven't driven it in a couple months. After getting the battery charged up and the car going again my cluster dash lights (scales) are not showing up unless it's sunny outside. The first day it was overcast and I only had the needles lit up, which was different for me.

I have never had this issue in the past. My dash lights are always on and I never run with the headlight switch in the "Auto" position, it is always in the "OFF" position. When I open the door all the lights come on in the cluster (Scales & Needles) but after I shut the door they fade back to just the needles lit up, which I think is just the overheard lights affecting the sensor. If I shine a light into the light sensor on the cluster then the scales light up.

Of course when I turn on the headlights or parking lights the scales do light up but like I said I never had this issue in the past. I could be sitting in a parking lot at night with the engine running, no lights on and all my dash lights were on (Scales & Needles). It is awkward to start the car at night and only have the needles lit up.

I double checked with Vag-Com and my code was already set to 31300

17-Instruments:
Mode 0: Nothing lit until ext. light on
Mode 1: Pointers lit all the time
Mode 2: Scales lit all the time
Mode 3: Pointers and Scales lit all the time

Changing the first number had the desired effect for 0,1,2 but when I switched back to 31300 I still only see the needles light up. It seems as though adding the "3" in the front doesn't have any effect at all. Even though my car was already set to "3" it now all of the sudden after the battery going dead, do I have this issue.

Can't figure out WTF is going on here since I have never had an issue with the cluster before now??? Do I have any issue with the cluster or maybe the headlight switch is messed up. Everything else seems to function normally, parking lights, headlights, front fog and rear fog.

Thanks,

Bimmerod

Auto-Scan

Hi Bimmerod. Thanks for your post but for us to provide ideas and help, we need a autoscan from the car. Can you post one up please?
How to post an Auto-Scan

Lots of low voltage errors on many modules, and some very strange subsystem part numbers under #15 Airbags?

First thing is to clear all the DTCs and see which come back to get rid of the historical DTCs caused by the low battery - you never know that may fix some of the problems?

BTW great choice of a B7 RS4 - I owned one for 10 years until retirement forced me to downsize

What I am saying is that my cluster was never like that before the dead battery/jump start. For some reason the cluster is not accepting the coding for the third option which would turn the Scales & Needles on with the ignition on.

I have tried to unhook the battery and reset everything but it is still not accepting the "3" coding to the cluster. All of the other ones make the desired changes so I don't know??? I have even driven it around for a few hours to make sure it was fully charged and all modules were reset after the Auto-Scan.

Doesn't make any sense ???

Did you save old auto-scan with configurations if so review them and why would you let an rs4 battery go flat or jump start it?

For some reason the cluster is not accepting the coding for the third option which would turn the Scales & Needles on with the ignition on.
In VCDS go to 'Options', 'User Interface and Identification' what values do you have in the Code(WSC), VZ/Importer and Equipment Number fields?

I have an old auto-scan, not sure what you mean "with configurations" though ???

Obviously life got in the way of making sure my battery did not die, it wasn't intentional. Car is covered in the garage and either I periodically drive it or hook it up to the trickle charger. Seems as though neither one of those happened before the juice ran out :cry::cry:

Here is screeen shots from those screens:

Yes, that's their default condition. When they're all zeros, VCDS tries to operate as stealthily as possible, but this is not always compatible with some changes.

Try this:
* Set WSC to your ZIP code (or '0' followed by the last four digits of your ZIP code if it's over 65535)
* Set Importer to 444 (that's USA).
* Set Equipment number to the '0' followed by the last four digits of your interface serial number.
* Click [Save]
* Exit VCDS and then re-start it.

Updated those fields with the information you gave. Now those fields are greyed out and not changeable anymore. Not sure if I need to change them back to 00000 ???

From Ross-Tech:
https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/option_screen.php
Note: If you are an individual user or independent mechanic, just leave the number set to "00000".

Restarted VCDS and the attempted to recode channel 19 with the "3" option without success. It is still not changing both scales and needles, it only behaves like option "1" where just needles are lit with Ignition ON. Option "2" turns on scales without Needles. It's just option "3" that only changes it back to Needles only, no Scales come on.

The ambient light sensor does work but I prefer to have it back to how it has been for the past 13 years, Scales & Needles ON with Ignition on all the time.

Doesn't make any sense ???

Have you tried cold-booting the instrument cluster? Remove all power from it. Either disconnect the car's battery for a while, or disconnect the cluster from the car for a while.

Yes, I have tried removing the battery for 10-15 minutes after it first happened when the coding didn't do anything.

I will try it again now since all the modules seem to be functioning normally and not generating any error codes. It just doesn't like the third option code for some reason?

Will let you know,

Not sure how relevant this is to you at this late stage but i'm posting for reference. I have a 2007 B7 Quatttro Avant that i bought and used in Canada then imported to the USA when I returned. It had been messed up a bit (possibly during battery replacement like you) and the general electric module had a bad coding. In the process of reading and sorting that out I discovered two things: the Canadian versions of the B7 are set to have the dash lights on permanently. The American versions are set to have them controlled by ambient light. In the coding of the Instrument Cluster/Module itself, the 5th digit is for country. 2 is USA and 3 is Canada. I don't know how the lights behave for other countries.

The 0 coding you currently have the 5th digit set to is for Germany (and probably the default if it got reset during the battery change).
