Hello,

Is adjusting the tappets on this car something a home enthusiast could tackle. The last tappets I adjusted was on my 1981 VW Golf 1500 :-)
If possible, are there any special tools needed or things to watch out for?

Many thanks,
Mart

Hello Mart
There is no adjustment needed, self adjusting hydro tappets:thumbs:

Thanks. So I assume a noisy "tappet" tick from a cylinder would indicate another issue.

You are going to have to do some dismantling for diagnosis. Could be blocked pick-up strainer, blocked oil-way in the head - or just worn hydraulic tappet.

p.s. I've still got a 1600cc 1981 Golf GTi and yes - I've manually adjusted the tappet shims. :)

Is it a relatively easy thing to remove the valve cover on this car?
