NEtech: Thanks- now I understand (well...........not really, but I do see where the number "29" comes from). I suspect my error was the term "addressing" - I assumed that the full 29 Bits were purely intended as address location pointers.
I guess folk here are familiar with the type of bit stream pictures as in your link - I'm not. My very amateur (and extremely uninformed) observation is that it's a very inefficient way of carrying 8 Bits of data. But then I suspect that the overhead (i.e. additional 21 Bits) is the price that must be paid for using just two wires to talk to all the modules in the bus and for having these chats in such a noisy environment.
Anyhow, clearly the thing works - so kudos to Mr CAN for inventing the protocols !
