Hi guys,

I've been using a fully licenced copy of VCDS for a few years now.

Happy to report that all has been well until the latest update.

The problem is with the Autoscan. It goes through the process of interrogating the various modules and displays the initial synopsis in red at the beginning of the scan to indicate which modules have fault codes. It then goes through the process of interrogating each module. Some modules it reads OK, although it seems to be a lot slower than the previous versions. Eventually though it will reach a module and get stuck, displaying "Retrieving Fault Codes - Please Wait" and that's where it stops. I've left it for a good 5-10 minutes but it just goes no further. If I interrogate the individual module fault codes it will display the fault codes, with the exception of the CANbus module that it just wont read at all.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it makes no difference.

Any help appreciated.

Wayne.

This issue has been reported already, look for some of my recent posts whereby autoscan hangs on DTC's. Clear the DTC's and the autoscan runs OK. It has happened with other users as well.

No solution or root cause has been determined yet.

Thanks mate, at least I know it's not just me.

I've had a browse through the forums and it appears there is a bug that needs squashing.

Clearing the DTCs just to get an auto scan to run may not always be appropriate. Sometimes I want to leave DTCs for the next servicing to look at.

Could you post a scan from that 2013 A6 Allroad with VCDS 17.1.1? Also, if you have another Windows based PC to try with the HEX-USB+CAN and same vehicle please let us know if that is reproducible.

It's sometimes helpful, particularly on lower-powered machines, to check the two 'Reduce CPU Usage' checkboxes in the Options screen. That's something that's been seen historically, not something new and particular to VCDS 17.1, so I'm unsure if these settings will have any bearing on the issue. If you have time, give it a shot anyway, and see if it helps you.

Sure, if you can duplicate it please post the details here! Just make sure to refresh this post for any updates (including the other thread here) before you spend extended time out in cold weather this weekend.

I have it reproduced here on an Atom netbook with the A6 loaded with DTCs. I think I have a handle on what's happening (race condition due to your weak CPU being overwhelmed) but I need a few more hours (next week) to finalize a fix.

I have a A10 AMD with 8Gb RAM (posted details in another thread) which exhibits the same issue, just freezes/hangs on DTC's while auto scanning so may not be 100% weak processor.

I will do another scan which I know will hang as it's 100% repeatable unless the DTC's are cleared, I will try and get the task manager to see if anything pops up for VCDS.

Eric has a pending fix for the Auto-Scan hanging with DTC concern. We don't have a EXE to offer yet... but stay tuned.

Eric,

May I be the first to congratulate you on fixing this issue. Autoscan ran through with no issues.

Stil 17.1.1 on the download page ?
17.1.1.2 with DS 20170107 is what is on the download page. If you have experienced this problem, that is what you should try.

Uwe, on the download page it says

The Current version is:
Release 17.1.1
Data Version 20170107

So is this actually 17.1.1.2?

Thanks

Yes.

The least significant digit of the full version number does not show in VCDS. The only way to see it is to right-click the EXE file and check its properties. Hence the data version bump.
