do you offer credit for a VIN used to adapt a module?
As a general rule, no. It's clearly stated in the FAQ:

What if I'm swapping components from different cars?
If you're swapping components like instrument clusters or ECUs that have different VINs stored in them, you may have to register each of the different VINs.

However, since you made a noteworthy discovery, I think we can work something out.

Thanks for the clarification, kind of a bummer that it has to "eat" a VIN in those circumstances, but I guess there really isn't an elegant way to differentiate between adapting a new module to an old car VS. a totally different vehicle (VIN) altogether...

Correct, there is not.

If I had a 3 VIN HEX V2 interface, would it be possible to pay for the VIN upgrade twice? Basically I'd go from 3 -> 10 VINs, and then from 10 -> Unlimited VINs.

How would the pricing for that work? $200 (what I paid) + $170 + $170 = $540? It seems like that would cost $70 more than buying a 10 VIN and upgrading once ($300 + $170 = $470), but I bought my cable several years ago and thus didn't anticipate the amount of VWs in my family spiraling out of control, haha.

AFAIK, it's possible to pay two steps and get Unlimited right away.

I wouldn't like to talk about the price, someone from Ross Team will explain that better.

That is correct. Buying a HEX-V2 with a 10-VIN license to begin with is indeed $69 less expensive than buying a 3-VIN interface and upgrading it to 10-VINs after-the-fact.

I understand there is a three versions, but what I'm not grasping here is whether the VCDS locks out after the number of vins have been read?

The thread now is large and many questions already asked and answered, but as already said by others, if the VIN can be over ridden and not recorded therefore just keep on using VCDS, then why the three versions and why the price gaps between them from few $ to hundreds of $!!

Its confusing to me now because I don't know what to invest in.

It seems you did not read post #1 carefully enough to fully comprehend what is written there.

If you are in the trade, why look at enthusiast systems which are limited for enthusiasts?

The HEX-NET Pro is the device for you - Unlimited VINs - wired and wireless operation. Windows PC and mobile device supported.

Simplest terms I can give.

Available by distribution in the UK where you can get direct help.

Yes, as of version 17.1, the VIN status is shown on the About screen.

-Uwe-

Is there a way to show that actual VINs, not just the status? The follow up question is: If one of the VINs belongs to an '03 TDI which I've sold long ago, am I able to delete that VIN in order to make room for a newer VW? (I own the version that's limited to three VINs. TY

But wait, there's more...
License Status:
Valid / Activated -- VIN(s) Used : 2/10

I just noticed that, and all along I thought I was restricted to just three VINs. It seems I do have the 10 VIN version...correct Uwe? (Off topic: Is your alter ego pleased w the recent decision to resume nuclear testing?)

If it shows 10, then it is a 10 VIN interface.

No, you cannot remove VINs from the interface. See: Managed by VIN

No. For reasons of privacy, in case you sell your interface, or if it is lost or stolen, there is no way for the user to see what VINs are stored in it.

Yes, back in December of 2021, you traded in your old KII-USB for a HEX-V2 with a 10-VIN license via the first option on this page.
