Hey guys,

Proud VCDS owner here trying to diagnose an issue on my own car for once (instead of helping out others),

Its a top of the line 6 Speed DSG 4Motion 3.6 BWS Passat CC, with all the addons possible.

When driving up slight inclines, the gearbox doesnt seem to notice this and changes into 5th quckly rather than staying in 4th like it does on a flat. As soon as it changes into 5th, it flips back to 4th a second later and causes a bit of a surge making it feel like an old auto box and makes it hard to drive smoothly.

When i'm towing, i,e extra weight at the rear, it drives like a dream, holds 3rd uphills for longer than without the towing weight, and no sign of it trying to change up early.

This only happens of course in D (Drive mode)

I have seen faults previously for the Vehicle inclination sensor, are these the things that are bolted to the chassis arms underneath? but those faults seem to come and go away after clearing.

Is there anything i can check to see if things are aligned properly with any DSG sensors or DCC suspension settings?. I have considered adding ballast to the rear to prove my above theory but havent got around to it yet. ACC Headlights seem OK, but there is evidence of these being manually adjusted before with a screwdriver.

Thanks

I would pay close attention to the ATF temp sensor.

The fact it tows flawlessly makes sense when holding or selecting a lower gear in the strategy, & based on the increased load/temperatures.

I have seen where some have installed a resistor to increase the temp signal, & to make the TCU think this to make it more sporty of a shift.

There may also be a firmware update so ask the dealer if anything on SVM

Thanks, i did some logs today and couldnt see any issues with the temperature, it was a 10oC day and the temperature went nowhere near 130oC on the gearbox oil. it seems to do it hot/cold anyway.

The DSG oil has recently been changed to rule this out too, and i did the top fill method so i know the correct amount went in there!

Do you think the suspension level has nothing to do with it? How else does the DSG know its going uphill?

Unless you are on a very steep incline or are heavily accelerating/braking, I would think the suspension level would be irrelevant, the front or rear of your vehicle doesn't really change in relation to the ground/road just because of an incline.

That said, I am neither a german car engineer, nor a mechanic. And I don't play either on TV.

Please explain this to me. Isn't the idea of filing from underneath to fill both the internal then the external reservoir within the DSG so that there is no air bubbles in the system. I'm looking to get my DSG fluid changed as well, but I want to know when the "correct" volume of DSG fluid has been poured in. In reality, the amount of DSG fluid drained out is never the same as that which you have to replace in the system (even though there are no leaks).

My DSG does the opposite of yours at times where it overrevvs the engine while climbing an incline (no passengers and not towing anything), so I have to manually upshift where it then maintains the upshift. You should have the opportunity of taking it to the dealer to have the firmware for the mechatronic updated.

I have the Eurodyne, DSG flash, so I can't go that route.

NO2, is the firmware update a dealer-charge item? I'm wondering if I can coerce them into updating the firmware on my 02E when the Takata airbag recall service is finally ready. Say, maybe sometime in 2009.

My understanding is that the dealer should be doing the firmware updates to each of the control modules during routine servicing as VW makes the TSB's available. This should be complimentary during the warranty period then after expires, is a dealer charge option included during regular servicing at the respective intervals.
My local dealer (ATL - Jamaica) doesn't offer these updates, so I don't any other option.

That's assuming the dealer is competent.

Last month I took my car (Skoda Octavia - MQB platform) for its first service and told the dealer I wanted the infotainment firmware upgraded to the latest version (from 0475 to 0490) to solve a couple of problems I was having. When I returned to collect the car the dealer said there was no newer firmware - strange as the next day I updated the firmware to the newer version myself!!!

Moral? - don't always believe the dealer technician, they're under a lot of pressure from the ir management to do jobs faster and hence cheaper which means they can cut corners and not be fully trained and up-to-date.

"How" did you do the update yourself? I thought SVM was only available through the dealer. I'm convinced that I have numerous other modules to be updated as well.

A fellow member on briskoda.net made the update available for download, and included instructions to both do the update and clear the fault codes that doing the update would cause.

The update files are unzipped and copied onto an SD card which is then plugged into the infotainment unit, then the boring part of watching the update happen (which takes about 40 minutes), and finally one adaptation channel has its value changed using VCDS before clearing the fault codes.

Easy to do, but fairly boring watching the many progress bars slowly move over the 40 minutes!

It would be so cool if ALL the other control modules could take updates using this method. I wonder if the Ross-Tech team has ever considered the implementation of dealer-like SVM through the existing or new OBD2 cable. Other than needing the flash file, what hardware limitation is there to overwrite all the data on a particular control module with updated firmware. Since VCDS does a good job with adaptations, why not try a new challenge?
