It's probably not my place to get involved in these things but I'd like to see an example of what this is about?

I have personally used the (another) forums to "dislike" once in 100,000 posts.

For the same reason Facebook opted not to add in a dislike feature, all it would really lead to is needless added animosity between individuals. Even if its not what you want it to be used for, it would wind up being a form of passive aggressiveness. The pros simply don't really outweigh the potential and likely cons.

Really? I click like, when I agree with someone's opinion or find it good what he/she does. And, as administrator, I agree with Michael that a dislike button is a dangerous thing that has to be used with care. The reason is, that many people who get a brown mouth on liking get also brown hands on throwing... some kind of leisure activity for loosers.

The result would be brown stuff everywhere which is not desirable.

yes really !

A fair post won't get nothing on some forums but when a 'mod' for instance or 'VIP' post (could be quite a poor post) it is swarmed in 'likes' etc, I think if I read in the right context this is the kind of thing which the OP refers to ?

If our benevolent dictator wanted that sort of environment, then he would have included such a feature. Personally, I think the lack of a dislike button forces anyone who wants to make their opinion known to elaborate on their position. That is a more productive form of conversation as far as I am concerned.

Nice one Vic. Always stirring the pot. It was good seeing you in Vegas! Did you upgrade to the HEX-NET yet?

Folks, I doubt Vic really wants a "dislike" button. If I know him, he is just trying to get Uwe to jump into the fray.... Like we have nothing else to do.

Katie, Mike, others, you are correct that creating an adversarial environment is not desirable - nor will it happen. If one does not agree with a post, then one should take the time to respectfully offer a different view.

The admins in this forum have little patience for vitriol and such. Take the mud and muck slinging to other forums who enjoy it. On this forum, members are expected to hold each other in high esteem and to treat each other with respect, helping one another use Ross-Tech products to solve problems on VAG cars. Even in Uwe's Bar, respect for other's opinions should be top priority.

But then I am old school and do not participate with the attitudes seen in most social media. What happened to people respecting others who have different opinions/views? Are we really better off railing at one another? Does it really help us sort our differences?

I think one thing that the "like" button affords is a distinct lack of posts consisting of "+1" or similar 'i agree' or 'well said' posts without adding any other substance to the conversation.

I tend to like posts as long as I think they are well thought out or informative, even if I don't necessarily agree, or when I do agree but I don't have anything substantive to add.

I'm on a few forums that have a "reputation" rating, and you can "like" or "dislike" a person, and it counts in their reputation...

not respected at all, not respected, neutral, respected, very respected... are the ratings.

So, I did a "dislike" on someone who in my opinion did something nasty... that person went to several of my existing posts and hit dislike on them, even though they were months old.

I've seen this in several places... if you give people the ability to dislike someone, it's often someone not really likeable, and they will often retaliate... and you are right down the drain.

I think the "neutral or like" system does work well... if you REALLY think someone is a doofus, then you have to tell them so ha ha!
