Low Boost Issue with Tune

[Karnut]

Having an ongoing issue with UM Stage 1 tune on my TT RS. Tried various boost settings but never providing available boost level and boost levels available never go beyond stock boost! Except for UM tune and 1 step colder plugs, only mod is 034 CAI. Running 94 octane at all times.

Have had leak tests, soap tests, visuals and diagnostics of various components hoses, clamps etc. with negative results. Had N75 and a sensor recall replaced. Have never had a fault code. All input indicates a mechanical issue.

Removed CAI and the UM tune and reflashed to stock. Once done stock boost obtained as available and is exceeded by provided so seems that with tune stock ECU setting/controls override and boost is being limited/purged at some point.

Prior to proceeding would appreciate any comments/suggestions that might help narrow this down?

Bad N75, WG hold spring, or small leak at diverter or charge pipe.

I see readiness has been manipulated in addition to DTC report diagnostic stacks.

Always makes it more fun when this is done.

A second stock controller is advised for true diagnostic observations.

The car is tampered altered for illegal defeat of SMOG devices being hardware and software.

Readiness should never appear as if "ready" for a car that has been modified for the race track, or with a deleted CAT, nor for no failure to report DTC's for it.

The only reason someone would do such a nefarious act would be to deceive a governing SMOG agency & for a publically driven vehicle.

Stock controller will permit all relevant tests to be performed to get a true list of faults.........this would include boost positive and negative deviations.

What would be the purpose of removing such a boost deviation calibration table, "even if tuned", just seems to be laziness or an incomplete half-ass project.

• 11 (1) An emission control system that is installed in a vehicle or engine to enable it to conform to the standards set out in these Regulations shall not

  • (b) in its operation or malfunction, make the vehicle unsafe or endanger persons or property in or near the vehicle.
• (2) No vehicle or engine shall be equipped with a defeat device.
  
• (2.1) Despite subsection (2), an ambulance, police vehicle or fire fighting vehicle may be equipped with a defeat device if the device is one that is activated during emergency response operations to maintain speed, torque or power in either of the following circumstances:
  
  • (a) the emission control system is in an abnormal state, or

To a degree yes affirmative.

All tuning is illegal unless accompanied by an exemption conformity certificate on record with the EPA of the USA or Canada.

Logs/readiness tests are invalid to a degree, "yes" when tests are bypassed or tables have been modified not setting a DTC, & when it should or not at all in your case.

The only way for me to proceed is to install a new stock ECU?

A qualified lawful repair pertains to all stock hardware and software as per the repair manual and all emissions devices in place.

Final question - for now ha! - ther are a lot of T RS with the UM tunes. Do any have this situation from the tune?

All I say is ask any tuner you deal with for their conformity exemption certificate that says what they have done is legal.
Put the documentation where their mouth is.

Just think if VW can get fined 15 billion for far less, what do you think this could net?


There are no substitutions for understanding basics for how things work mechanically!

Did you ask your tuner or dealer for their EPA US or Canada exemption certificate?

Been busy busy but getting clarification on certificates. Thanks for your help and info. I'm also getting comments from several people with similar mods in the US.

Yes that's the CAI I have but have removed it for now to go back to stock. Checked it for install and craxcks etc. but all OK

Irrespective of the certificate issue, I'm trying to narrow down what to do in my next step to understanding/resolving this. I want to know exactly what the issue is and get it fixed then can determine to remain stock or not. Ideally don't want to have to redo all of the time/tests done to date if at all possible.

Again as to your original boost issue........it is either a boost leak, or a mechanical issue with WG or hold spring PSI of WG, or a plugged/restricted exhaust.

Yeah I checked........ UM has no conformity exemption certificates for, or with the CARB/EPA administrators in the USA/Canada, or a pending application for approval, nor for any vehicle whatsoever.

Anything higher or lower than a 150-200MBAR deviation in either direction is unacceptable and should trigger a DTC.

So is your tune a genuine and unaltered 100% UM tune?

How are changing to stock by switchable maps ( simulated stock ) or with an actual re-flash process?
Please explain this in more detail how you are doing this and how long the process takes you?

100% UM tune and reflash to stock with my original settings. Took about 2-3 hours done by installer and UM.
Can't do UM install at this time. Will have to wait. Winter here and I'd like to resolve leak problem first.

I may have an earlier Auto scan with tune.

Okay you can have a leak without having a leak stock but a leak modified.

Your logs in beginning of thread show you make boost up to 2000 MBAR
Anything requested over 2100 MBAR seems to open the WG and dump the boost from what I see, resulting in lower peak PSI than stock.

This would indicate a weak WG spring for the WG or faulty diverter.

You mentioned 94 octane in your first post.

Is your tune for 93 or is it for 91 octane. Canadian 94 is somewhere between water and 91 octane on a good day.

If you have a tune for 93 and are running Canadian 94 have you logged your ignition pull to see what is going on?

Since you are able to run higher boost levels with lower duty cycle when stock vs tuned that would not indicate a hardware problem and is likely related to the tune or some unwanted condition being seen when running with the tune. If your timing is acceptable I would check to see if you are having issues with the throttle closing.

These are mafless so the airflow is modeled in the ecu, changing the intake to one with drastically different flow characteristics could possibly create an issue with the tune. Since you said the intake was removed in post 12 were the logs in post 11 done with or without the intake?

I don't know if I agree with this and would expect an increase in boost momentarily......... before a throttle closure if that is the case.

Wow! Would this be done as part of the UM tune?

I purchased this car new from the dealer in 2012 and have done nothing to it until the UM tune this past spring.
Only mods to that point were MSS springs, Haldex controller and camber plates and only mod since was the 034 CAI.

All services work done by local Audi who I trust not to do anything like this so only possible sources would be the tune or the original Audi dealer I purchased it from?

Anyway for me to trace this back as to when it occurred?

As stated.......... it's a hardware issue or FOD and most likely not tune related, since it ran fine from spring till about now according to the OP.



Personally unless any tune has a conformity exemption........ it is illegal, and it is more than likely riddled with deletes anyway these days.
Always best to stay stock .........it's legal or is it these days?, and at least can be diagnosed properly.

VCDS becomes almost useless outside of "logging" if tests or DTC's don't report..........or are shut down...
