Changing the Country Code in [17 - Instruments] - helpful or harmful?

I had a 2010 Golf Comfortline in Australia; one feature I liked was the D1-D7 display as the DSG did its job. Now living back in Canada with a 2012 Golf (Trendline) and and a 2011 Tiguan (Highline), and I am hoping to find a tweak to change the D display to the D+gear#.

I've crawled all over a number of forums and have not discovered a solid solution outside of a few vague suggestions that the secret may lie in the settings available under certain country codes.

My question: if I mess with the country code, am I opening a can of worms, or is it safe to experiment? I realize I may have to recode some other features and tweaks, but I am concerned that I will perhaps inadvertently disable the vehicle, or start driving on the other side of the road.

What is the risk in changing the country code?

I have a fuzzy recollection that on a number of NAR 6-speed DSGs, there was a software update a number of years back that (among other things) made the D1-D6 display (which was previously standard) go to just 'D'. Quite a few people were rather miffed at this.

I don't think there's much risk in changing the country coding, but I rather doubt it will produce the results you're looking for. Make sure you have a complete record of the stock values before you change anything so you can revert if necessary.

Thank you for that Uwe; I will proceed carefully and document as I go. Having great success with the numerous tweaks I have implemented so far, and learning a lot about the vehicles at the same time.

Perhaps a more substantial reason for wanting to see the gear displayed - I have an APR ECU upgrade (stage 1) scheduled and I would like to be able to keep an eye on how the gearbox is doing.

Success! The desired change is not in [17 - Instruments] after all; it is in [02-Auto Trans]. After a bit of sleuthing on other forums I discovered a couple of posts that talked of changing the coding from NAR to RoW in module 02. I changed the code ending in ...840 to ...328 as shown in the pop-up (balloon); this was 'accepted' and voila - Dg# / Sg# indication was enabled.

To recap: the above screenshots illustrate how I changed my NAR D/S display to the D1...D6 and S1...S6 display that I prefer (MY2011 Tiguan HighLine). Works great with no unintended consequences noted so far.
