Bit of background history..........Couple of weeks ago dealership had engine/trans out and resealed timing chain covers. Went fine for 2 weeks then trans fault light came on dash, trans was shifting erratic but getting all gears. Put Vagcom on and reset fault codes (where it appeared in each module) as well as full reset. Took to dealers for service and get this fault looked at. (gave them copy of printout).
They say malfunction of Nuetral Switch ($656 for part and $231 Labour) to Fix.. Having worked over the years on a lot of Japanese Autos I am reluctant to suspect that. Drove it home from dealer and was like in "Limp Home Mode" Started in about 3 gear and would not change. When home put Vagcom on again and reset fault codes. NOW has Rev but no Fwd gears. Have checked adjustment of gear selector and N start switch. SO, here is where I am up to Fault codes cleared... KO... foot on brake....Light on dash and console indicate Park, move to Rev and lights correspond. move to N no light on console and dash reads R, move to Drive and get D1 then changes to -- and fault code logged again.

Have checked connection of electrical plugs, all OK. So now wondering if it is the N Switch or the TCM ?????????

Well this morning was like normal (for a short time) All lights for gearshift corresponded, even N THEN was like something warmed up and back to same fault. Makes me think a faulty connection, so have now purchased a Tone Generator and Probe to test the individual wires.

first bit of advice, before taking in for service it is highly recommended to do a complete auto scan. secondly go to trans and find the address for gear position and verify gear selected matches the one from the address. you should try this when its acting up. shift manually thru all the gears

Thanks ivagp,, Did have the VCDS on and in 02 transmission....Advanced Measuring Blocks I selected Selector Position and others up to 12 allowed. With KOEO P reads P..........R reads R...N reads N....D reads D1......S reads S1..... THEN when move selector out of S fault is logged...........Here is then what it logs.

The body of this old fella has given up crawling around under the vehicle, so have to taken it to my Auto Electrician to tear his hair out. But any advice anyone can give is appreciated, I can then pass it onto him.

OK here is the update. My Electrician checked out the wiring and said was OK. I Bought the part from VW (about A$650) and he fitted it, so all is working well (so far)..
