You probably don't need the full JDK (which is big) for it to run, just the JRE (Java runtime, which includes the java command) is probably sufficient. With Ubuntu, the default is to open jars (a jar is similar to a zip) with the archive extractor, the runtime appears as an executable program when I right click and when I select that it runs the utility.

Hello,

The ancient Windows based laptop that I used for running VCDS decided to stop working yesterday so I decided to see if I could get VCDS working with my MacBook or my dad’s iPad using my HEX-NET interface and a WiFi connection. First thing to do was to find and download the “WiFi Configuration Utility” which I found here https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/115/

Then, as so many on this thread have discovered, I couldn’t open it, the message “The application “HexNetConfig” can’t be opened.” was displayed. So I did a two fingered click over the HexNetConfig icon to bring up an option menu. From there I selected “Show Package Contents”, this led me to folder called “Contents”, I double clicked on that and discovered it contains 5 folders and 2 files, I then double clicked on the folder called “Java”. Inside the “Java” folder I found the “HexNetConfig.jar” file, I did a 2 fingered click on that file to bring up the option menu for the file, then I selected the “Open With” option, this gave me the option to open the file with “Jar Launcher”. When I selected this option I was presented with a warning that this was an application from an unknown source and all sorts of terrible things could happen to my MacBook and data should I choose to open it. I opened it and was able to configure my HEX-NET and get VCDS working through the “Safari” app on my MacBook and my dad’s iPad, but I still haven’t managed to get the interface working with the VCDS app on the iPad, but I’m sure I’ll muddle my way through it eventually.

I hope this is helpful to someone,

Neil
