My issue, is related to these two codes in the engine ECU:

000275 - Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42)
P0113 - 002 - Signal too High
000259 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P0103 - 001 - Signal too High


When I turned on the ignition today, the engine air intake read 17C, and the ambient temperature on the dash read 19C - close enough for me.

As soon I a started the engine, the engine air intake temperature jumped down to -48C (or thereabouts). It stayed there.

The MAF readings were sitting about mid 300's at idle, and didn't seem to vary much with throttle blips of upto 4000 rpm (up to high 300's, though it had no load). I ran the engine until the thermostat opened (I was bleeding the cooling system) and nothing changed much.

The MAF has the IAT built in, according to the wiring diagrams. It has 4 wires to the ECU (the wiring diagram doesn't specify which is which signal), and the 12V feed is switched by the fuel pump relay, just as it would have been in the R32 golf - the MAF has 12V at the same time the fuel pump is running.

Why does it read normally with ignition on, engine off, but doesn't read normally with the engine running?!?!

Air intake temperature - 48°C look like open circuit. Is it possible that because of the vibrations came to an open circuit?

I'd checked the power supply on component, with the engine running and MAF "as is".

Check the external crimps on the resistor for the IAT on the MAF sensor first...re-solder if needed.

Then if doesn't work...........

Sounds like the MAF internally is bad from a poor weld joint within the unit.

Take the cover off, scrape the silicone, re-solder the connectors, reapply RTV it shut.

Done........or replace MAF......

I couldn't really see how it would be my wiring (I only changed the 12v feed), but strange it throws those 2 codes.

Does anyone think the "000259 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) P0103 - 001 - Signal too High" is caused by the temperature fault???

I tried about 4 times, and it changed the instant the engine started each time - maybe coincidence?

The MAF was OK in the original car - no codes, but it's been sitting in my garage for 18 months, though I can't recall dropping it :D

I'll have a play one day.

Questions:

If I hooked the power feed to the MAF up to a subcircuit on the X-relief circuit, and the 12V disappears while cranking, who thinks it would cause my issue?

I don't think I have, but the Touran Wiring Diagrams ONLY shows an X-Relief relay on the "E-box, High", not Low, and I have the low version... so I may have unknowingly done it!It's easy to change though, if I have.

I know I'm jumping the gun, because I haven't tested for constant 12V while cranking yet, but the MAF reads fine EVERY time, until the second I crank the engine. Yesterday, It was showing 000.0g/s and 24C, until I cranked it, when it went to -48C and about 354g/s. I wonder if the 12V cuts out, the ECU flags the codes while cranking, and then doesn't read from the MAF, because of the flagged codes??? It would cut power to the fuel pump at the same time, but the existing pressure would easily let the engine start, until the pump kicked back in.

Might be another case of too much fiddling, not enough thinking :o

Don't take first closest available +12V and ground for engine sensors and output circuits. My suggestion is to be very careful and do all wiring as close as possible to the original one. If You took +12 for MAF from X-relief, it will cause MAF and IAT faults for 100%.

Thanks - I am doing it as close as possible, but I added a complete "Motronic Relay" cicruit, because the Touran didn't really have it set up like that originally.

If I have enough Brownie Points, I'm going to nip out and check the 12V supply tonight when I get home. I only get garage time on Monday and Thursday during the week :-)

Damn...

It wasn't that.

It does NOT do it with the starter solenoid feed unplugged and the key turned to start (no cranking), ONLY when the ECU sees engine speed, while cranking.

I don't want to open the MAF just yet - I'm worried I'll kill it :eek: I think I may have done something wrong somewhere... GROAN.

It's still strange, that it works the way it does.

Ignition on, power to MAF (and fuel pump etc) while priming, then 12V turns off.

The temp works fine with ignition on, whether there is 12V or not: I assume it works off the 5V rail and the switched ground provided by the ECU.

The MAF reads 0.00, whether there is 12V or not either - I assume the 12v is for the film heater, and the 2 sides of the temperature differential sensors on the film work off the same 5V and earth above. The film heater is only turned on when there is airflow (engine speed registered) to avoid overheating/burning out the film, right?

When the engine cranks, the 12V is switched back on by the ECU, via the fuel pump/motronic relay AND the MAF and Temp signals go weird - It surely must either be loosing the 5V rail, or the Switched Earth from the ECU... Musn't it? It does it EVERY single time, at the INSTANT that G28 registers an engine speed - right at the time it triggers the motronic relay (fuel pump, O2 heaters and MAF supply 12V).

I need to watch the 5V signal, and the switched earth signal and see what they do...

Hopefully I can sneak out again tonight :D

Pins 1, 3, 4 and 5 from MAF goes directly to ECU pins 26, 27, 53 and 29. Four straight wires. Nothing else connected to those wires. Pin 2 is 12V power supply, through 10A fuse from ECU power supply relay J271. J271 terminal 30 is powered straight from battery. (ok, to be completely correct, the battery isolating igniter is just next to battery, too). J271 is controlled by ECU with switching ground from ECU pin 65 to relay coil terminal "85" and coil is powered when ignition is on. Do this match so far?
If You have faults when really starter is cranking and have no faults at all the same conditions but disabled starter, you may have somehow misswired signal grounds/power grounds. Or just bad ground connection from battery negative to engine block. Try to add additional ground wire. A powerful one. Jump-start cables could fit for this test.

I do have the MAF wiring matching - I haven't altered any MAF wires, except the 12V feed. I have verified the MAF 1,3,4,5 wires are correct, just 20 minutes ago. They are all correct/intact.

The only real difference I have, is the the power feed to J271 and the power supply to it's trigger coil are the same - meaning both are live. The relay should only be activated when the ECU grounds the other side of the J271 trigger coil, so I don't see it should matter, but perhaps I should try supplying them seperately. I have also tried supplying BOTH of them via J681 Terminal 50 Relay, and it makes no difference. They should really be separated and connected correctly, I guess. It's easy to do.

I have 12v going to pin 2, any time the fuel pump is running (it's the same relay). So that's what I expect, based on the wiring diagrams.

The 5V reference is on pin 4. It comes on with the ignition, and turns off about 5 or 10 seconds after the engine is shut down.

I CANNOT measure earth continuity on pin 3, but I don't know if it's an isolated ECU earth - I can't see how though - the 5V reference measures against the common earth (negative battery terminal).

Maybe it IS a faulty MAF, as Jack said :(

With the MAF connected, engine running I get odd readings, all measured to earth:
MAF Pin:
1 IAT SIgnal 8.5xV
2 12v Supply 14.2xV
3 Earth 12.0xV
4 5V ECU 4.96V
5 MAF Signal 12.0xV

I did solder the IAT crimps today, as Jack suggested, but no chance to test yet.

I decided to open the MAF last night - got it all open, and it's filled with Goo, and has those ultrasonic welded aluminium wire connections inside (like the Bosch BMW ABS units have) - I don't think they solder well :-(

If something has died inside, it may be pulling down a rail inside the MAF etc? causing both faults?

I'm confused :-(

Conveniently, new MAFs are quite cheap! FCP Euro works out to about NZ$250 shipped, which is different to ECS, who's SHIPPING is pushing NZ$250!

Well... Well... Well...

Soldering the IAT contacts didn't help... but I did dig a bit deeper...

So - perhaps the earth to the maf is NOT switched by the ECU???

On the Audi ECU, that used to run the engine, it has a number of pins which are direct to earth, internally.

On the R32 ECU, they are the same, except 4 which AREN'T!

The ones that aren't, go to the same devices, and the same pins, so I suspect something has popped that track in my ECU!!!

The R32 ecu is from a car I never drove and it was an auto anyway, so I was going to find a manual one.

I may trace that track tomorrow at work, and see where the smoke got out :-(

When I get a chance, I'll overlay my own earth and see what happens.

Radiator outlet temperture = -40C... it's one sensor which has no earth at the ECU, I get 5V at the plug, and nothing on the return, and no continuity to earth.

I'll verify that later - maybe tonight.

Do you think it's taken out the earths?

The MAF figure i. block 039 works as I'd expect. That 4.58 was at idle, and it jumped up to about 19?, I think, with a sharp jab on the loud pedal, in neutral.

I'm still confused why the IAT reads correclty before cranking :mad:

Did I screw up, or did a component take it out? Was it like this when I got here.

The ECU was from a car parked in a garage in a house fire, but the car wasn't directly on fire.

No (unexpected) engine fault codes! MAF reads "normal" was hovering around 4-5 g/s with fairly cold engine. IAT hovering about 21C, which is correct for late afternoon on a rainy spring day :D

I still need to find a replacement manual ECU... I didn't take any pictures of the repair... for a very good reason ;) it's a bit rough, but I did use Premium LEADED solder (the real stuff!), some insulated tinned single strand and some hot glue to hide it all properly and stop it moving :thumbs:

I suspect I must have accidently applied power at some stage, without the ECU properly earthed, and it's tried to earth itself backwards, through everything it can!

The word of the week in our workshop is currently "KNOB"... I am one.:facepalm:

I "borrowed" a couple of mm of it from work... We get this stuff especially, because it's so nice to use :-)
