VCDS locks up during scanning channel 09 adaption map

Hi guys

New user to VCDS. Just got my vehicle today and I've started making scans of the controllers I want to modify. All seem fine apart from 09 - the application becomes unresponsive about 10 minutes into the scan.

What can I do here?

I have a feeling it was due to using wifi on the HEX-NET. I'm using version 15.7.4 on MY16 MIB2 O3 vRS.

It ended up completing the map successfully, after about 2 hours, with intermittent 'sporadic communication failure' errors.

Would using the supplied USB cable help at all?

Mike: I've used Hex Net to create lots of admaps for the "5Q0" series module ( mainly on Golf mk7s) and I also have (occasionally) had the same "'sporadic communication failure" error. It only appears to happen for the BCM (never happened on any of the other control modules) and it appears to happen on the later model vehicles (with larger adaptation channel count). Also, because of the crappy WIFI in my workshop, I always make admaps via the USB connection. It also happened with the latest Beta ver 16.6 (I deliberately replicated the error yesterday on a MY16 mk7 Station Wagon)

As you probably already know, there are between 2,500 -5,000 adaptation channels in a MQB platform vehicle and the special thing about the BCM in these cars is that it invariably contains over 50% of these channels. As you also probably are aware, making an Admap of the BCM is a long process albeit, the Hex Net cable seems to complete the task much quicker than my old HEX+CAN cable - but it is still a long process. Because of the time needed, I always have the engine running when I'm make BCM admaps (easier for me than hooking-up a battery charger). What I found is that the likelihood of the "sporadic comms failure" is lowered if the other discretionary activities in the car are reduced to an absolute minimum. For example, a "no-no" when making BCM admaps is pressing the accelerator repeatedly in an attempt to increase the car's rail-volts. My entirely uneducated and totally unproven hypothesis is that the problem relates to comms clashes on the CAN bus over the length of time that it takes to complete the process and how the CAN Gateway recovers the cable's request for access - but, as a self confessed rank amateur at this stuff, I'm more than happy for RT to refute my theory!


So, you are not alone in your observation. But for me it's not a big problem because (I think that) I have a process for minimising the probability of occurrence!

I've read the note on the page but I just want to confirm, once I start using the beta, it mentions it will upgrade the firmware on my HEX+CAN or Micro-CAN interface irreversibly. Does this also apply to HEX-NET?

I'm keen to try the beta but not keen not to be able to rollback to release if I want to.

Wow, crazy quick! Just scanned 09 - down from 1.5hours to ~4 minutes.

I still got a communication error once though (HEX-NET, over wifi). Do you want any debug logs so you can figure out what's going on, or should I expect sporadic comm errors?
